Ultimate Nightmare Set, page 50
part #1 of Angel's Nightmare Adventure Series
The sergeant begins with the rules and code of conduct. Then the men are taken to basic self-defense class and are taught how to properly apprehend a suspect. Mostly basic stuff that an officer is expected to learn.
Basically for the next week, Angel goes through basic training and learns the ropes of the job. In fact, the sergeant himself is rather impressed with Angel’s quick progress. The sergeant calls Angel to talk to him in private.
“Hey kid what’s your name again?” He asks Angel.
“Angel Medina, sir.”
“Well Angel you’ve been impressing me so far with your quick progress, let me ask you are you a quick learner in everything you’re taught?”
“I don’t like to say that, but I simply try my best to learn the job as quickly as I can. After all, the people of New York City expect us to be on our toes, right?”
“Yes, that would be correct Mr. Medina. It’s going to be a pleasure to have you in the force for years to come. Now, Mr. Medina give to me there partner!” Angel shakes the sergeant’s hand with feeling to the sarge’s satisfaction. “By the way this coming Monday is going to be your first day, but we decided that we’re going to throw a welcome party for you and your friends here. Can you be here this Monday?”
“Well that shouldn’t even be a question! Of course I’ll be there partner! See you Monday and bring some Bacardi when you’re at it.” Angel says while walking away and winks at the sarge.
“Gotta admit that kid has got a lot of energy, he should an interesting one to have on board. I just hope those Hybrid Corporation freaks don’t try anything funny with that substance.” The sarge slaps himself after he says something he feels is ridiculous or is it?
After a long week of basic training for Angel, he and Maria head for the park to their favorite makeout spot. It’s their spot to hang out on a Sunday night after a long week of work and school. The two kiss each other passionately for about a half-hour, until she hears a strange noise. Angel goes around looking for the source of the sound and then hears the sound of a zombie.
Upon further review the sound was coming from a harmless dog that is lost and the noise was simply a work of his imagination. As much as he says that he’s forgotten the dream, but something on the inside is telling him to at least be on the lookout.
Could it be that the so-called nightmare he had 5 years ago as an innocent High School student become a reality 5 years later? The chances are low, but all that needs to happen is the substance to turn rouge and spread its influence to the unsuspecting humans. What Angel doesn’t know is that Luis knows the other side of the “nightmare”.
Luis found out that Barry was a traitor to the NYPD and was working with the Hybrid Corporation. In otherwords, what Angel would consider to be vanity may not be vanity at all, it may just be an inside New World Order plot to take over NYC while killing all the unsuspecting humans. However Angel has no intention of letting a memory distract him, he has a party to attend to tomorrow.
The couple heads home and they rest up for tomorrow. Angel’s first real day begins tomorrow, although it will be mostly partying. The moon shines into the apartment with its healthy white shine beaming to the couple symbolizing peace and future prosperity.
Chapter 2
It’s Monday and it’s Angel first day at the job. Maria has the day off, so she decides that she wants to see her friend back in East New York. The two enjoy breakfast while looking out the window to another beautiful morning in September. Maria begins to talk.
“Hey baby this is some good bacon you made today and the home fries are even better. I’m lucky to have you sweetheart, it seems like we met earlier than when we met. This may sound stupid, but I feel like we went through an adventure together before. It might just be me though thinking this craziness.” She laughs low trying to brush off the embarrassing moment.
“Don’t be embarrassed baby, its fine you think that way. Honestly I think the same as well, but I think it’s because we love each other to death. Now finish up so we can go, I got a long day today.” Angel comforts Maria.
“What do you mean? Don’t you mean a long day of partying?” She laughs at him. “Just kidding, you earned it and besides I love a man in uniform.”
“Thanks hun, I promise though that I will be a great cop and we will move into something better than this apartment.”
“I don’t mind Angel, I love our little love nest here. In time we will have a house, don’t be too hard on yourself.” She says while hugging him tightly. “I don’t want to lose you.”
The two get dressed in the bathroom. Angel puts on his uniform while Maria puts on a purple sweater with ripped jeans and white converse’s.
Being a tomboy, Maria usually dresses like a boy and only dresses up for her boyfriend. However when she does, she enjoys entertaining Angel. Plus she is rather adept in defending herself and she’s gotten into a few fights during her school career.
Despite her checkered past in school, many people respected her and didn’t mess with her too much. In reality though, Angel is the only boy who loved her for whom she is and despite her rugged attitude, she does have a soft side to Angel’s satisfaction.
After the couple gets dressed the two head out of the apartment complex, which is rather nice looking. The hallways are in château style and have beautiful 18th century moldings. The two head for Angel’s car and they begin to head for East New York.
Before he heads to the percent for his first day of work, Angel drops off his girlfriend to her friend’s house which is a few blocks away from the 75th percent. He stops in front of her friend’s house and he kisses her goodbye before she enters the house. He keeps an eye out just to make sure she safely gets in the house, once she is greeted by her friend Angel pulls away. A minute later he pulls up to the police station and enters for his first day of work.
The sarge greets Angel happily and has him enter the filing room to do some paperwork. It’s the basic paperwork such as criminal history, medical forms and the code of conduct written down. Angel fills out the paperwork rather efficiently, wasting no time. Afterwards, the sarge orders Angel along with a partner named Bill.
Bill is Angel’s supervisor so to say. He’s in charge of teaching Angel the ropes. That also includes some of the lesser known tricks to survive the streets. He’s a 20 year veteran who’s in his upper 40’s to low 50’s and is of German descent. He is around 6’ 4” and weighs around 210 pounds. Unlike Barry, Bill has no connections with the Hybrid Corporation, so there is no question where his allegiance lies. Bill meets Angel and the two get along rather well.
Despite the friendly nature of Bill and the job, Angel has a funny feeling that something isn’t right in the air. He thinks it must be that dream again trying to enter his head, but for some reason he’s unable to forget it. He vows to keep it in his head and make no mention of it. He follows Bill into the patrol car to begin his first patrol rounds of his police career.
The two start some small talk while heading to the other side of East New York, where ironically Angel was raised at. A radio announcement shuts both men up and they listen carefully.
“We are at the Hybrid Corporation Headquarters right now, where they have developed the latest substance to fight cancer. Its code named ‘Broken Arrow’ and they have already tested the substance on a cancer patient. According to the results it’s proven to be a success. However, Hybrid has warned us about possible side effects with this latest drug. It hasn’t been nearly perfected, but the government has promised millions of dollars to Hybrid for the creation of the drug.”
Bill asks Angel, “Hey Angel, what’s your opinion about this drug?”
“…” At first Angel’s speechless. “Well let me hear the rest of the newscast, please.” Angel is in disbelief that Hybrid has come up with a new drug. He gets flashbacks of the dream he had over five years ago and it could become a reality. After a pause the newscast continues.
“We are seeing the CEO of Hybrid right now, Herman Clark. He’s ready to give out the results of the drug. I know people who have friends or family members with cancer are paying attention like white on rice.” The reporter says.
Herman Clark begins to talk, “Good Afternoon everyone, I’m afraid I have some bad news. ‘Broken Arrow’ is a failure, in fact the side effects were so bad that the patient had to be eradicated. While ‘Broken Arrow’ did sort of heal the man, he became extremely hostile. It was so bad that he was beginning to bite some of the people. Before everybody begins to panic though, I want to assure you that this drug and its subjects have been properly quarantined. There is no need to panic.” Everybody begins to scream as they see several of the ‘failed’ experiments grab Herman and begin to devour him.
The failed experiments are nothing more than zombies and mutated animals that have become hostile. The reporter cuts off the feed right away to avoid giving away the gruesome scene of the zombies coming to life for real. At the Hybrid headquarters in California the visitors are being eaten alive. The reports indicate that the virus hasn’t spread any further than California. Independent reporters have a different story though where the zombies and other B.O.W.’s (Bio-Weapons of Destruction) have spread throughout the United States.
In fact, a few reporters have spotted these same creatures right at the border of New York City. Nevertheless, these reporters are being kept off the loop, perhaps of fears by Hybrid that their failure will leak internationally.
Angel doesn’t like the sound of what’s happening and feels that the zombies are prepared to invade NYC once again. Only this time, it might be for real!
An hour later despite his doubts, Angel remains focus at his job and catches a few petty infractions. Nothing too serious and everybody is cooperative toward him along with Bill. In fact people respect Bill in the area and criminals fear him. What makes Angel feel better is a report on television that indicates that the “failed” experiments have been successfully quarantined and no sightings of zombies are nearby.
Around seven o’clock, Angel’s first tour is over and he’s on his way to his welcome party.
“Well done kid, you did well for your first day. Now don’t get too drunk tonight, I know it’s tempting. I expect you to be ready for your tour tomorrow, which begins at four PM sharp.” Bill says.
“Of course Bill, I’m responsible enough, but I gotta admit your first party must have been fun.” Angel laughs while responding.
“Who am I kidding? Yeah, I was drunk out of my mind my second day of work. To be fair crime was higher than what it is now, so go in there and have some fun. Don’t worry about Bill, the old fart.” Bill makes a pun about himself.
“You seem like a cool guy, why not join us tonight?”
“Well, you know what I’ll probably do that. Let’s go before the sarge drinks up all the good stuff!” Bill says in excitement.
The moon is shining brightly down the street under the train tracks of the J Train that runs through the north part of East New York. One thing that is noticeably strange is that the two haven’t heard a train pass for about thirty minutes or so. The two walk towards the police cruiser and they also notice a body down on the floor with a pool of blood.
Angel and Bill walk towards the dead body to examine it. Bill calls for the sarge for backup, but gets no response at all. In fact, he gets no response from anybody at the police station.
“Hmm… we got a problem no one’s responding to my calls at the precinct. Actually when you think about it, this place looks deserted all of a sudden.” Bill observes the strange circumstances.
“It’s never this quiet around here, last time it was quiet like this here was back in the 70’s. My father used to roam these streets and he could tell me well that this was a ghost town. I gotta funny feeling this has something to do with Hybrid.” Angel gives his two cents.
“Nonsense! Hybrid said everything was contained. Besides what would a bunch of zombies be doing in a dump like this? Now come on Angel, I bet everybody’s probably waiting for us back at the police station.” All of a sudden a demented man comes behind Bill getting ready to bite him.
“Get down Bill! Somebody’s behind you!” Angel yells to Bill.
Bill gets down and Angel shoots the man in the head. After a minute of examination it’s clear that the man isn’t human, he’s mutated. Hybrid had lied about the containment and Angel’s fears are slowly coming to reality.
“It’s a zombie! That thing was going to bite you, I swear to you!” Angel says hysterically.
“Relax Angel! You saved my life I’ll admit. However what’s this doing here, I thought Hybrid had this contained?” Bill calms Angel down.
“I’m afraid we been lied to, my fear is we might be the only survivors left here. I had a dream like this years ago about this same scenario, only this time it looks like its for real. I need you to go into the store and gather things that might come in handy. I’ll see if there are anymore of these goons.”
Angel quickly calls Maria to make sure she’s ok. After a couple of rings she picks up hysterically.
“Angel!!! We’re being invaded by zombies. They got into the house and ate Cindy! They’re going to eat me alive, hurry up baby… I don’t know how much more I can hold them off here.” Maria answers in a panicked tone. “The zombies are horrible looking. Some have faces that are missing noses or eyes. Houses are catching on fire, cars as well and people are being eaten…”
“Baby calm down, I need you to get out of there. You aren’t safe in that house anymore, come to think of it you aren’t safe anywhere. However, I need you to go to the police station. You got the best chance of survival there and I’ll be there to pick you up. Head for the second floor, the sarge has a secret room where you’ll be safe. I’ll be there right now!” Angel tells Maria to escape.
“Ok baby I’ll see you in the police station. I love you, please don’t die!”
“I’ll be fine. It’s you I’m worried about.” Angel hangs up his cellphone.
Bill finds a couple of matchbooks in case the lights go out.
“Angel the zombies are inside the store!” Bill yells while handing Angel a book of matches.
“They’re everywhere! Get in the car now!” Angel yells.
Angel and Bill enter the car and drive off to the police station. In Angel’s mind though he knows the police station may no longer be safe anymore. However, it’s better than being outside in the streets where the zombies have clearly invaded. What was a nightmare for him 5 years ago has become a nightmarish reality. Can he escape the survival horror again?
Chapter 3
Angel and Bill drive off and see nothing but dead bodies along with zombies.
“What the hell is this?” Bill asks hysterically.
“Like I said, it’s the Hybrid Corporation playing with people’s lives. They claim to be looking for a cure. However, in reality they’re using ‘guinea pigs' to build a superhuman or at least trying to. They never thought that it would get out of control like this and people wouldn’t catch on.” Angel answers.
“Well from the looks of it, there might not be a party for you tonight.”
“Forget about the party Bill, we just have to make sure we aren’t the next meal for these monsters. Anyway how long have you been on the force?”
“For twenty-seven years I been a cop, I love my job and plan to retire in the next 5-7 years. However with this mayhem, I have no idea what to expect now. It’s like my life has made a complete 360 in only a few minutes, but you’re right we gotta work together to survive.”
“I just hope that my…” Angel is cut off by a zombie that was hiding in the back of the car. “No!!! They’re in here as well, damn it!”
Bill drifts the car around the corner in an attempt to get the zombie off their backs. The zombies grabs onto Angel threatening to bite him until Bill drives the car into a light pole on a dead end street. The zombie flies through the windshield and into the pole. The two gather themselves and see they’re still in one piece until Angel sees an out of control gasoline tanker heading toward their direction.
The two get out of the car in the nick of time as the tanker crashes and explodes separating the two.
“Angel! Where are you?”
“I’m ok, the fire is too big. We’ll have to split up and meet in the police station, it isn’t too far. I’ll catch you there.” Angel screams to Bill.
“Ok I’ll see you there, please be careful!” Bill screams back.
The two find themselves separated in the mayhem that has hit NYC by storm. Angel is not too far from the station and can see the back entrance of the station.
He finds himself next to some crashed cars and a burning bodega. Also several zombies are in front of him. He pulls out his pistol and begins to empty several rounds killing the first wave of zombies. However more come out and he doesn’t have enough ammo to shoot the undead, so he’s forced to run. He’s on Linwood Street between Sutter and Pitkin Avenues, a place normally ran by gangbangers. Those same hoodlums are all bitten alive and lying on the ground, having their pathetic lives cut off early.
The police station is only a block away and he hopes to find Bill along with Maria inside. He sees the station in the distance, all of a sudden debris from a nearby building falls barely missing Angel. All of a sudden zombies appear in front of him and he begins to unload whatever ammo he has left on the zombies with no luck.
“Shit I better find a way inside or I’m going to be mince meat. I’m sure these zombies wouldn’t mind having 160 pounds of me. Hmm… it looks like I’m just going to have to run for it as fast as I can and hope for the best.”
He sees an opening and begins to run through it. He trips as he approaches a cabin area for the police station. One of the zombies gets on top of him, until Angel finds a pipe and trusts it into the zombie’s mouth killing it. The other zombies begin to gang up in numbers and go after him. He shoots his gun only to find out he’s run out of bullets and a whole bunch of zombies looking for his fresh live blood.
