Ultimate Nightmare Set, page 23
part #1 of Angel's Nightmare Adventure Series
He attended Brooklyn College graduated and decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. Angel and Luis don’t know each other, but would bump into each other at one point during one of Angel’s appointments at Woodhull hospital. However the meeting wasn’t much, only hi and bye and they went their separate ways. Angel was around 16 and Luis was around 24 during that bump in. Now at the age of 25 he is officially in the NYPD ready to begin his first day as an officer.
It’s a normal summer day in July, the same day as Angel’s scheduled operation. Luis receives his first assignment. His first assignment comes at 9 in the morning and it is to organize the file cabinet in the office in the sergeant’s office. Luis is disappointed. He expected some action to start off.
“Damn I was so pumped up to catch some criminals and they got me organizing files. Shit, it must be a really slow day for crime or people are beginning to act civilized.”
He’s kind of right the crime rate is rather low, in fact this year crime is 75% lower than last year. It is also on pace to be the year with the least recorded crimes in all of NYC history. He doesn’t mind that NYC is becoming a peaceful place to live in. At least compared to when he was growing up in Bushwick, Brooklyn where crime was at an all time high. However, he does become annoyed that he might end up doing desk duty not only today, but for the foreseeable future.
The police pretty much have the city under control, you would have one murder in 3 weeks time, and the suspect would always get caught. Drug dealing has also become almost non-existent. Luis can’t help, but to feel a bit suspicious that all of a sudden that crime is dropping like a bullet.
He turns the television on now that he’s on his lunch breakand begins to watch the news for a little while during his break. The newscast begins to talk about a company called the “Hybrid Corporation” working in collaboration with many hospitals in the NYC area to release a new substance. This substance is intended for patients with cancer and promises to be the substance that would stop cancer.
Hybrid has had a questionable past before, but no actual proof could be obtained that they were doing any illegal activity. He doesn’t pay too much attention to the newscast as he is enjoying a Big Mac from McDonalds along with fries and a soda.
“Well can’t complain at least I could watch TV and eat. I haven’t had one of these in a while, so this isn’t too bad. Plus I know my wife and daughter are going to be safe.” Luis says in his head contently.
It’s one in the afternoon and his lunch break is over. So it’s back to the mundane task of organizing files, which to a degree he’s starting to get tired of. He is stuck in the office where the desk is a redwood material and the office has the feeling 19th century room with the Victorian style moldings. That setting alone makes the task even more boring, at least in his head. He keeps looking at the clock painfully and for as much work he got done, only a half hour passed.
“Oh come on now, time can’t be that damn slow. Well in this office I can see how slow time can go. I feel like I’m in the past here. I’m using an iPhone and this man still has a vintage style phone in his office. Count on me to get the old fashioned sergeant, oh well!” He says humorously.
It was two o’clock and still nothing interesting has happened on his first day.
“Well if everyday is like this I might had found the perfect job. Just sit on my ass and get paid. It may be a boring job, but as long as it pays the bills I really don’t care.”
The clock strikes 2:15 PM and Sergeant Chuck walks in to check in on him. He’s is impressed by the work Luis has gotten done, so much he’s thinks of giving him the rest of the day off.
“Well… well for a rookie you sure know how to organize. I’m impressed! The last guy I had was totally clueless in what he was doing. Don’t worry you’ll see some action soon, well that is if the city begins to misbehave again. Tell you what, you did well on your first day, so I’m giving you the rest of the day off. You will be on call though so if anything pops up I’ll call you, but I wouldn’t hold my breath hehe. Anyway, I’ll see you in the morning, probably have you do some training exercises. Good job today.” Chuck tells Luis impressed.
Luis is happy that he is getting out of the dull looking room, but at the same time disappointed that he didn’t see any action. Well, at least he would get to see his wife and kid at a decent time. He heads to the locker room to change from his uniform to his regular street clothes as he’s now off duty.
He packs up his stuff in his duffle bag and prepares for his exit. He says bye to everyone including Sergeant Chuck, who returns the favor. Luis makes his way out of the 83rd precinct and to his Cadillac Deville to begin his journey home. Luis doesn’t live too far though. He lives on Cooper Ave in Glendale N.Y. So the trip isn’t too long.
The clock strikes two thirty in the afternoon and as he is about to turn on Cooper Ave. He gets a call and stops his car. It’s Sergeant Chuck on the other side.
“Luis listen we’re going to have to pull you back, we got a serious situation by Gates Ave and Broadway. People are being… can’t believe I’m saying this… but they are being eaten alive by other people. Something you would see in a horror film. Plus we have reports of a dead body in the historic Gates Mansion that we need to investigate. The owner of the Mansion is the founder of the Hybrid Corporation, Dennis Clark. Chances are he maybe dead already. Anyway get your ass there pronto! I’m not saying it like that because I’m a dick, it’s because I’m scared of zombies!” Chuck says hysterically.
“Relax sarge, I’m on my way to assist the other boys in blue, finally some action!”
“Officer Luis we are more concerned about the death inside the mansion because the Hybrid Corporation has always had a checkered past. Besides I recommend you go inside for safety… No it can’t be, reports of these zombie like creatures have been popping up every…” Chuck is heard in pain as he is being eaten alive by a “zombie” like creature and the call is cut off.
“Chuck, hey Chuck! Shit! It looks like I’m on my own here along with anybody that’s still alive. Damn this has the feeling of a horror film already. Looks like I’m going to be getting target practice on live targets very early in my career. Better call my wife and daughter and tell them to stay home.” Luis calls his wife and lets her know don’t panic because of their daughter, but to not step outside for any reason.
The survivor horror adventure will repeat once again, but this time told from a different perspective.
Chapter 2
Luis drives to the location that was given to him by his now dead boss Sergeant Clark. As he drives through Myrtle Ave as a shortcut all he sees are dead bodies with bite marks all over them. If not dead bodies, people with pale or purplish looking faces walking around mindlessly. All of a sudden a peaceful NYC, a city on the verge of having an all-time low crime rate has become a city riddled with mayhem. A nice sunny summer day is now turned into the day of the living dead.
He’s distraught with what he’s seeing, passing through his own neighborhood that he once experienced as a kid. It was where he grew up with his best friend Joe and his cousins. It was where the streets were free, fire hydrants open during the summer, and curfew would be when the street lights turned on. Even then sometimes parents would let their kids still play as long as they were supervised. Luis began to shed a tear, which was rare for him as he barely cries.
The pain of watching his former childhood home being destroyed by what seems to be a zombie invasion is too much for him to hold. However, he needs to be strong as he continues his way towards the target location. The Mansion is located on Gates Ave a few blocks from the train station. It might sound weird that a Mansion is in an area where mostly low income residents reside. However, the Mansion was built back in 1877 way before the neighborhood changed to mostly minorities.
It’s even labeled as a landmark in Brooklyn, so even the poorest of people have great respect for the Clark family. The mansion has been passed down by many generations. It has never been open to the general public, but yet people are in awe of the mystery of finding out what the mansion looks on the inside.
It’s five in the afternoon and he gets to the target location. He parks his Cadillac on one of the side roads and begins to walk. At first, the scene looks quiet and he carefully looks around for anything suspicious. In fact, the first two blocks are actually very quiet, maybe a little too quiet for his good.
It’s probably people trying to hide inside their homes. However, as he gets closer to Broadway the scene changes drastically, he begins to see the dead bodies piled up on the corner. Luis is relieved that he sees several of his own teammates, but is also shocked to see his best friend Joe in uniform.
“Joe! Is it you it can’t be! What are you doing here? I had no idea you were an officer.” Luis says cheerfully and shocked at the same time.
“Yeah man, I work in the 73rd precinct in Brownsville. I joined a couple of weeks ago. That is why I wasn’t able to go out the past two weekends.” A zombie approaches Luis from behind.
“Hey Luis watch out and duck!” Joe shoots a zombie who tries to get behind Luis.
“Thanks bro! What is this, a zombie invasion or what?”
“I’m just as clueless as you my brother, they told me to come here and try to control the situation.”
“Did they tell you about the Clark family mansion?” Luis asks Joe.
“Yeah they did, all I know is that it belongs to a family of gringos who own the Hybrid Corporation. If I had my guess they have something to do with this, with all the shit they try to throw in the air!”
Joe is Luis’s childhood and best friend. He isn’t as bad ass as Luis and didn’t have too many run ins with the law. In fact, he graduated Glover Cleveland High School with a B+ average. Luis always considered him to be the smarter of his friends and Joe would occasionally be picked on for being a bookworm on the down low.
He wasn’t bothered though with the insults, though he was determined to be an officer for the longest. He graduated Brooklyn College in criminal justice with a GPA of a 3.4 and then went straight for a job with the NYPD. Joe is a year younger than Luis. He isn’t nearly as tough as Luis, although he could defend himself. Joe is more of a marksman, as he took the zombie out with a head shot.
The two of them and the other officers rush to the scene, where they are bombarded by zombies and rabid dogs. The scene consists of destroyed car windows and an overturned bus under where the train would normally be running. They try to take out as many zombies as they can, but the number of zombies is too much. The train isn’t an option either as the zombies have the entrance surrounded. The flames by the train station symbolize the result of the mayhem caused by the zombie invasion.
Several officers are killed by the rabid dogs that are proving to be relentless. All of a sudden man’s best friend turned into man’s worse enemy. Luis decides that the situation is too dangerous and too far out of hand to defuse. He orders Joe and the one remaining officer known as Barry to the mansion figuring it was best to protect their hides.
Barry is a veteran officer of 5 years, age 33, and one of German nationality. He knows the neighborhood well, but the residents for some reason do not respect him. Perhaps is because the residents are wondering what is a German man doing patrolling an area that consisted mostly of African-Americans and Hispanics. He has an average built for a man who is 33. He is 5’9” and 180lbs, has average strength and an average marksman. Barry has pretty good relations with the Clark family, but isn’t really involved with the affairs of the Hybrid Corporation.
The three officers head inside of the mansion rather easily while Barry shoots a couple of rabid dogs down. More dogs come attacking, but the trio closes and locks the front door before the dogs could get inside. After gathering themselves the trio marvels at the main hallway of the Clark mansion.
“What is this place?” Joe asks.
“Not your ordinary house is it?” Barry answers.
“This place is huge! I’m not sure what is happening in this place, I just think we need to find a back exit and head for safety.” Luis says.
“I agree Officer Luis you go into the dining room, while me and Joe stay here to make sure nobody gets in.” Barry orders Luis.
He heads into the dining room, now much more nervously. He realizes that this case has turned from a riot/dead body in a mansion to simply a mission of survival. He attempts to call his wife, but his phone has no signal. However, going back outside is no longer an option anymore.
Chapter 3
Luis enters the dining room which is elegant in design. It has gray brick walls just like the houses that were built back in the 1800’s, along with a cherry wood dining table the size of two pool tables. Towards the end of the dining room is the emblem of the Clark family along with two golden goblets on the stand. He investigates the room, but finds nothing interesting and heads for the door next to him.
He ends up in a hallway which is much plainer in design and heads left. When he arrives at the end of the hall he sees a zombie eating a person who looks like a butler. He tries to shoot his gun, but realizes he’s out of bullets. He makes a run for it back where he came from.
He runs away from the zombie, sprints through the dining room, and loses the zombie. After seeing a zombie up close and personal, his face turns nearly pale white. Upon arriving at the main hallway, neither Barry nor Joe are seen anywhere.
“Barry! Joe! Is anyone there? Answer me!” Luis screams.
No answer is received. He goes around the hall through the lower and upper level, but finds no one. He ponders on what his next move should be. He heads back downstairs and heads for the door directly across from the dining room. Luis figures if the two went somewhere it was probably there, after entering he sees a statue of Dennis Clark in the middle with an art room in the back and a door to the right.
Luis ignores the art area and heads for the door, which leads him to a hallway with pink wallpaper with flowers on it. Out of nowhere a zombie pops through a window, scaring the heck out of him. He grabs a curtain pole and uses it to stab the zombie in the head. After impaling the zombie in the head the zombie dies and he continues along his way.
He continues his way through the hallway until a rabid dog pops out. He is able to anticipate the dog’s movement and kicks the dog as the dog is lounging towards him. He is kicks the dog in the jaw killing it instantly.
He says in his head, “I don’t normally like killing dogs, but it was either that or I was going to be its next meal.” He feels pity for killing the dog.
Luis arrives at another hallway where he sees a shotgun on the wall, which he grabs and then he sees a couple of zombies. He blasts both of their heads off and the blood splatters all over his uniform, but he could care less. Luis sees three doors one to his right, one to his left and one leading to the courtyard. He heads for the courtyard to see if he can get any signal on his phone. Only a bar of signal is acquired, but it’s better than nothing. He tries to call his wife, but the phone goes straight to voicemail which concerns him quite a bit. Then he calls Joe and while the phone rings he gets no answer at all.
So that gives him two possible scenarios either Joe would call him back or Joe and Barry were in serious trouble. Luis waits for about 10 minutes and receives no call back, leaving him to assume that the two of them are in trouble. There’s a gate on the other side, but the gate is locked and needs a key.
Luis decides that it’s best to go back inside and continue his search for his fellow teammates. He heads for the door to his right when he came back in. He heads into what looks like a hunter’s room, Dennis Clark and his family are also avid hunters as far as he can tell by the animal trophies.
In fact, his grandson Herman Clark is into taxidermy and some of the animals were prepared by him. He finds some bullets for his handgun and his shotgun. Finding nothing more interesting he gets out of the room and heads for the third door in the dark greenish hallway. He enter another hallway, he shoots the head of a zombie that was standing right in front of him.
He sees a set of stairs ahead leading to the second floor. He sees a wall of pictures with people whose faces are missing, what is the purpose of that? He ponders for a moment.
He goes up the stairs and kills a couple of zombies who are waiting for him. He realizes that if he can get the key to the courtyard then maybe he could get out with his head still on his body. However, there is still a whole mansion that needs to be explored, so the key could be anywhere. Joe and Barry are also missing. He heads through the door into a hallway which contains red wallpaper and a few zombies. He kills one zombie easily, but is grabbed by the other. Luis is able to fight the zombie off by pushing him away and blasting it with his shotgun.
He carefully continues down the hallway and sees a green door, but opts to not go inside. Going to the end of the hall, he sees another door which is locked. So he backtracks to the green door and enters the room. He finds metal statues of knights and a keybox towards the end of the room. While he’s heading deeper into the room, one of the knights attacks him trying to take a hack at him. He’s able to backflip out of the way of the attack and the knight falls apart after missing him.
“What in the hell, are these damn knights alive? Is there a ghost in here or something?” He says in agony as the knights scare him blindly.
All of a sudden another knight takes a swing, but he is able to duck under the axe. He kicks the knight and the knight falls apart in pieces. Out of nowhere another knight takes a hack at him with his back turned. He’s able to roll out of the way, but only because of instinct as he felt the knight’s movement before the knight was able to strike.
He gets to the keybox and finds a key for the door that was locked at the end of the hallway inside the keybox. He walks back to the door, opens it and heads inside. He makes a startling discovery, the body of Dennis Clark and he isnt’t shot or stabbed. Clark is beheaded and just seeing the body is enough to strike fear into the fearless officer Luis. The door ahead of Luis slams open and a zombie with a scythe pops out.
