[31] μετ’ αὐτὸν ἐκράτησε Μελχία υἱὸς τοῦ Σαρεφὶ ἕως Βηθαναθινὶμ καὶ οἱ ροπωπῶλαι ἀπέναντι πύλης τοῦ Μαφεκὰδ καὶ ἕως ἀναβάσεως τῆς καμπῆς.
[31] After him repaired Melchia the son of Sarephi as far as the house of the Nathinim, and the chapmen over against the gate of Maphecad, and as far as the steps of the corner.
[32] καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς πύλης τῆς προβατικῆς ἐκράτησαν οἱ χαλκεῖς καὶ οἱ ροπωπῶλαι.
[32] And between that and the sheep-gate the smiths and chapmen repaired.
[33] Καὶ ἐγένετο ἡνίκα ἤκουσε Σαναβαλλὰτ ὅτι ἡμεῖς οἰκοδομοῦμεν τὸ τεῖχος, καὶ πονηρὸν αὐτῷ ἐφάνη, καὶ ὠργίσθη ἐπὶ πολὺ καὶ ἐξεγέλα ἐπὶ τοῖς ᾿Ιουδαίοις.
[33] Now it came to pass, when Sanaballat heard that we were building the wall, that it was grievous to him, and he was very angry, and railed against the Jews.
[34] καὶ εἶπεν ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ· αὕτη ἡ δύναμις Σομόρων, ὅτι οἱ ᾿Ιουδαῖοι οὗτοι οἰκοδομοῦσι τὴν ἑαυτῶν πόλιν; ἆρα θυσιάζουσιν; ἆρα δυνήσονται; καὶ σήμερον ἰάσονται τοὺς λίθους μετὰ τὸ χῶμα γενέσθαι γῆς καυθέντας;
[34] And he said before his brethren (that is the army of the Samaritans) Is it true that these Jews are building their city? do they indeed offer sacrifices? will they prevail? and will they this day restore the stones, after they have been burnt and made a heap of rubbish?
[35] καὶ Τωβίας ὁ ᾿Αμμανίτης ἐχόμενα αὐτοῦ ἦλθε καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· μὴ θυσιάζουσιν ἢ φάγονται ἐπὶ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν; οὐχὶ ἀναβήσεται ἀλώπηξ καὶ καθελεῖ τὸ τεῖχος λίθων αὐτῶν;
[35] And Tobias the Ammanite came near to him, and said to them, Do they sacrifice or eat in their place? shall not a fox go up and pull down their wall of stones?
[36] ἄκουσον, ὀ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, ὅτι ἐγενήθημεν εἰς μυκτηρισμόν,
[36] Hear, O our God, for we have become a scorn;
[37] καὶ ἐπίστρεψον ὀνειδισμὸν αὐτῶν εἰς κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν καὶ δὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς μυκτηρισμὸν ἐν γῇ αἰχμαλωσίας καὶ μὴ καλύψῃς ἐπὶ ἀνομίαν.
[37] and return thou their reproach upon their head, and make them a scorn in a land of captivity, and do not cover their iniquity.
CHAPTER 4
[1] Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν Σαναβαλλατ καὶ Τωβια καὶ οἱ Ἄραβες καὶ οἱ Αμμανῖται ὅτι ἀνέβη φυὴ τοῖς τείχεσιν Ιερουσαλημ, ὅτι ἤρξαντο αἱ διασφαγαὶ ἀναφράσσεσθαι, καὶ πονηρὸν αὐτοῖς ἐφάνη σφόδρα·
But it came to pass, when Sanaballat and Tobia, and the Arabians, and the Ammanites, heard that the building of the walls of Jerusalem was advancing, and that the breaches began to be stopped, that it appeared very grievous to them.
[2] καὶ συνήχθησαν πάντες ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἐλθεῖν παρατάξασθαι ἐν Ιερουσαλημ.
[2] And all of them assembled together, to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to destroy it utterly.
[3] καὶ προσηυξάμεθα πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ἡμῶν καὶ ἐστήσαμεν προφύλακας ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτὸς ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν.
[3] So we prayed to our God and set watchmen against them day and night, because of them.
[4] καὶ εἶπεν Ιουδας Συνετρίβη ἡ ἰσχὺς τῶν ἐχθρῶν, καὶ ὁ χοῦς πολύς, καὶ ἡμεῖς οὐ δυνησόμεθα οἰκοδομεῖν ἐν τῷ τείχει.
[4] And Juda said, The strength of the enemies is broken, yet there is much rubbish, and we shall not be able to build the wall.
[5] καὶ εἶπαν οἱ θλίβοντες ἡμᾶς Οὐ γνώσονται καὶ οὐκ ὄψονται ἕως ὅτου ἔλθωμεν εἰς μέσον αὐτῶν καὶ φονεύσωμεν αὐτοὺς καὶ καταπαύσωμεν τὸ ἔργον.
[5] And they that afflicted us said, They shall not know, and they shall not see, until we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
[6] καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤλθοσαν οἱ Ιουδαῖοι οἱ οἰκοῦντες ἐχόμενα αὐτῶν καὶ εἴποσαν ἡμῖν Ἀναβαίνουσιν ἐκ πάντων τῶν τόπων ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς,
[6] And it came to pass, when the Jews who lived near them came, that they said to us, They are coming up against us from every quarter.
[7] καὶ ἔστησα εἰς τὰ κατώτατα τοῦ τόπου κατόπισθεν τοῦ τείχους ἐν τοῖς σκεπεινοῖς καὶ ἔστησα τὸν λαὸν κατὰ δήμους μετὰ ῥομφαιῶν αὐτῶν, λόγχας αὐτῶν καὶ τόξα αὐτῶν.
[7] So I set men in the lowest part of the place behind the wall in the lurking-places, I even set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
[8] καὶ εἶδον καὶ ἀνέστην καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τοὺς ἐντίμους καὶ πρὸς τοὺς στρατηγοὺς καὶ πρὸς τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ λαοῦ Μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν· μνήσθητε τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν τοῦ μεγάλου καὶ φοβεροῦ καὶ παρατάξασθε περὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὑμῶν, υἱῶν ὑμῶν καὶ θυγατέρων ὑμῶν, γυναικῶν ὑμῶν καὶ οἴκων ὑμῶν.
[8] And I looked, and arose, and said to the nobles, and to the captains, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember our great and terrible God, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
[9] καὶ ἐγένετο ἡνίκα ἤκουσαν οἱ ἐχθροὶ ἡμῶν ὅτι ἐγνώσθη ἡμῖν καὶ διεσκέδασεν ὁ θεὸς τὴν βουλὴν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐπεστρέψαμεν πάντες ἡμεῖς εἰς τὸ τεῖχος, ἀνὴρ εἰς τὸ ἔργον αὐτοῦ.
[9] And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was made known to us, and God had frustrated their counsel, that we all returned to the wall, every man to his work.
[10] καὶ ἐγένετο ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ἥμισυ τῶν ἐκτετιναγμένων ἐποίουν τὸ ἔργον, καὶ ἥμισυ αὐτῶν ἀντείχοντο, καὶ λόγχαι καὶ θυρεοὶ καὶ τὰ τόξα καὶ οἱ θώρακες καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες ὀπίσω παντὸς οἴκου Ιουδα
[10] And it came to pass from that day that half of them that had been driven forth, wrought the work, and half of them kept guard; and there were spears, and shields, and bows, and breast-plates, and rulers behind the whole house of Juda,
[11] τῶν οἰκοδομούντων ἐν τῷ τείχει. καὶ οἱ αἴροντες ἐν τοῖς ἀρτῆρσιν ἐν ὅπλοις· ἐν μιᾷ χειρὶ ἐποίει αὐτὸ τὸ ἔργον, καὶ μία ἐκράτει τὴν βολίδα.
[11] even of them that were building the wall: — and those who carried the burdens were under arms: each with one hand wrought his work, and with the other held his dart.
[12] καὶ οἱ οἰκοδόμοι ἀνὴρ ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ ἐζωσμένος ἐπὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ καὶ ᾠκοδομοῦσαν, καὶ ὁ σαλπίζων ἐν τῇ κερατίνῃ ἐχόμενα αὐτοῦ.
[12] And the builders wrought each man having his sword girt upon his loins, and so they built: and the trumpeter with his trumpet next to him.
[13] καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τοὺς ἐντίμους καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ πρὸς τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ λαοῦ Τὸ ἔργον πλατὺ καὶ πολύ, καὶ ἡμεῖς σκορπιζόμεθα ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους μακρὰν ἀνὴρ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ·
[13] And I said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and abundant, and we are dispersed upon the wall, each at a great distance from his brother.
[14] ἐν τόπῳ, οὗ ἐὰν ἀκούσητε τὴν φωνὴν τῆς κερατίνης, ἐκεῖ συναχθήσεσθε πρὸς ἡμᾶς, καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν πολεμήσει περὶ ἡμῶν.
[14] In whatsoever place ye shall hear the sound of the cornet, thither gather yourselves together to us; and our God shall fight for us.
[15] καὶ ἡμεῖς ποιοῦντες τὸ ἔργον, καὶ ἥμισυ αὐτῶν κρατοῦντες τὰς λόγχας ἀπὸ ἀναβάσεως τοῦ ὄρθρου ἕως ἐξόδου τῶν ἄστρων.
[15] So we continued labouring at the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.
[16] καὶ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ εἶπα τῷ λαῷ Αὐλίσθητε ἐν μέσῳ Ιερουσαλημ, καὶ ἔστω ὑμῖν ἡ νὺξ προφυλακὴ καὶ ἡ ἡμέρα ἔργον.
[16] And at that time I said to the people, Lodge ye every man with his servant in the midst of Jerusalem, and let the night be a watch-time to you, and the day a work-time.
[17] καὶ ἤμην ἐγὼ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς προφυλακῆς ὀπίσω μου, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐκδιδυσκόμενος ἀνὴρ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ.
[17] And I was there, and the watchmen behind me, and there was not a man of us that put off his garments.
CHAPTER 5
[1] Καὶ ἦν κραυγὴ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν αὐτῶν μεγάλη πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτῶν τοὺς Ιουδαίους.
And the cry of the people and their wives was great against their brethren the Jews.
[2] καὶ ἦσάν τινες λέγοντες Ἐν υἱοῖς ἡμῶν καὶ ἐν θυγατράσιν ἡμῶν ἡμεῖς πολλοί· καὶ λημψόμεθα σῖτον καὶ φαγόμεθα καὶ ζησόμεθα.
[2] And some said, We are numerous with our sons and our daughters; so we will take corn, and eat, and live.
[3] καὶ εἰσίν τινες λέγοντες Ἀγροὶ ἡμῶν καὶ ἀμπελῶνες ἡμῶν καὶ οἰκίαι ἡμῶν, ἡμεῖς διεγγυῶμεν· καὶ λημψόμεθα σῖτον καὶ φαγόμεθα.
[3] And some said, As to our fields and vineyards and houses, let us pledge them, and we will take corn, and eat.
[4] καὶ εἰσίν τινες λέγοντες Ἐδανεισάμεθα ἀργύριον εἰς φόρους τοῦ βασιλέως, ἀγροὶ ἡμῶν καὶ ἀμπελῶνες ἡμῶν καὶ οἰκίαι ἡμῶν·
[4] And some said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tributes: — our fields, and our vineyards, and houses are pledged.
[5] καὶ νῦν ὡς σὰρξ ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν σὰρξ ἡμῶν, ὡς υἱοὶ αὐτῶν υἱοὶ ἡμῶν· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς καταδυναστεύομεν τοὺς υἱοὺς ἡμῶν καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας ἡμῶν εἰς δούλους, καὶ εἰσὶν ἀπὸ θυγατέρων ἡμῶν καταδυναστευόμεναι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν δύναμις χειρῶν ἡμῶν, καὶ ἀγροὶ ἡμῶν καὶ ἀμπελῶνες ἡμῶν τοῖς ἐντίμοις. –
[5] And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children are as their children: yet, behold, we are reducing our sons and our daughters to slavery, and some of our daughters are enslaved: and there is no power of our hands, for our fields and our vineyards belong to the nobles.
[6] καὶ ἐλυπήθην σφόδρα, καθὼς ἤκουσα τὴν κραυγὴν αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς λόγους τούτους.
[6] And I was much grieved as I heard their cry and these words.
[7] καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο καρδία μου ἐπ’ ἐμέ, καὶ ἐμαχεσάμην πρὸς τοὺς ἐντίμους καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ εἶπα αὐτοῖς Ἀπαιτήσει ἀνὴρ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ὑμεῖς ἀπαιτεῖτε. καὶ ἔδωκα ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἐκκλησίαν μεγάλην
[7] And my heart took counsel within me, and I contended against the nobles, and the princes, and I said to them, Should every man demand of his brother what ye demand? And I appointed against them a great assembly,
[8] καὶ εἶπα αὐτοῖς Ἡμεῖς κεκτήμεθα τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἡμῶν τοὺς Ιουδαίους τοὺς πωλουμένους τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐν ἑκουσίῳ ἡμῶν· καὶ ὑμεῖς πωλεῖτε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν; καὶ ἡσύχασαν καὶ οὐχ εὕροσαν λόγον.
[8] and I said to them, We of our free-will have redeemed our brethren the Jews that were sold to the Gentiles; and do ye sell your brethren? and shall they be delivered to us? And they were silent, and found no answer.
[9] καὶ εἶπα Οὐκ ἀγαθὸς ὁ λόγος, ὃν ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε· οὐχ οὕτως, ἐν φόβῳ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἀπελεύσεσθε ἀπὸ ὀνειδισμοῦ τῶν ἐθνῶν τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν.
[9] And I said, The thing which ye do is not good; ye will not so walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the Gentiles our enemies.
[10] καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου καὶ οἱ γνωστοί μου καὶ ἐγὼ ἐθήκαμεν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἀργύριον καὶ σῖτον· ἐγκαταλίπωμεν δὴ τὴν ἀπαίτησιν ταύτην.
[10] Both my brethren, and my acquaintances, and I, have lent them money and corn: let us now leave off this exaction.
[11] ἐπιστρέψατε δὴ αὐτοῖς ὡς σήμερον ἀγροὺς αὐτῶν, ἀμπελῶνας αὐτῶν, ἐλαίας αὐτῶν καὶ οἰκίας αὐτῶν· καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀργυρίου τὸν σῖτον καὶ τὸν οἶνον καὶ τὸ ἔλαιον ἐξενέγκατε αὐτοῖς.
[11] Restore to them, I pray, as at this day, their fields, and their vineyards, and their olive-yards, and their houses, and bring forth to them corn and wine and oil of the money.
[12] καὶ εἶπαν Ἀποδώσομεν καὶ παρ’ αὐτῶν οὐ ζητήσομεν· οὕτως ποιήσομεν, καθὼς σὺ λέγεις. καὶ ἐκάλεσα τοὺς ἱερεῖς καὶ ὥρκισα αὐτοὺς ποιῆσαι ὡς τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο.
[12] And they said, We will restore, and we will not exact of them; we will do thus as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and bound them by oath to do according to this word.
[13] καὶ τὴν ἀναβολήν μου ἐξετίναξα καὶ εἶπα Οὕτως ἐκτινάξαι ὁ θεὸς πάντα ἄνδρα, ὃς οὐ στήσει τὸν λόγον τοῦτον, ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκ κόπου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσται οὕτως ἐκτετιναγμένος καὶ κενός. καὶ εἶπεν πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία Αμην, καὶ ᾔνεσαν τὸν κύριον· καὶ ἐποίησεν ὁ λαὸς τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο.
[13] And I shook out my garment, and said, So may God shake out every man who shall not keep to this word, from his house, and from his labours, he shall be even thus shaken out, as an outcast and empty. And all the congregation said, Amen, and they praised the Lord: and the people did this thing.
[14] Ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας, ἧς ἐνετείλατό μοι εἶναι εἰς ἄρχοντα αὐτῶν ἐν γῇ Ιουδα, ἀπὸ ἔτους εἰκοστοῦ καὶ ἕως ἔτους τριακοστοῦ καὶ δευτέρου τῷ Αρθασασθα, ἔτη δώδεκα, ἐγὼ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου βίαν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔφαγον·
[14] From the day that he charged me to be their ruler in the land of Juda, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Arthasastha, twelve years, I and my brethren ate not provision extorted from them.
[15] καὶ τὰς βίας τὰς πρώτας, ἃς πρὸ ἐμοῦ ἐβάρυναν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐλάβοσαν παρ’ αὐτῶν ἐν ἄρτοις καὶ ἐν οἴνῳ ἔσχατον ἀργύριον, δίδραχμα τεσσαράκοντα, καὶ οἱ ἐκτετιναγμένοι αὐτῶν ἐξουσιάζονται ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν, καὶ ἐγὼ οὐκ ἐποίησα οὕτως ἀπὸ προσώπου φόβου θεοῦ.
[15] But as for the former acts of extortion wherein those who were before me oppressed them, they even took of them their last money, forty didrachms for bread and wine; and the very outcasts of them exercised authority over the people: but I did not so, because of the fear of God.
[16] καὶ ἐν ἔργῳ τοῦ τείχους τούτων οὐκ ἐκράτησα, ἀγρὸν οὐκ ἐκτησάμην· καὶ πάντες οἱ συνηγμένοι ἐκεῖ ἐπὶ τὸ ἔργον.
