And the Lord said to Joshua, Fear not, nor be timorous: take with thee all the men of war, and arise, go up to Gai; behold, I have given into thy hands the king of Gai, and his land.
[2] καὶ ποιήσεις τὴν Γαι ὃν τρόπον ἐποίησας τὴν Ιεριχω καὶ τὸν βασιλέα αὐτῆς, καὶ τὴν προνομὴν τῶν κτηνῶν προνομεύσεις σεαυτῷ. κατάστησον δὲ σεαυτῷ ἔνεδρα τῇ πόλει εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω.
[2] And thou shalt do to Gai, as thou didst to Jericho and its king; and thou shalt take to thyself the spoil of its cattle; set now for thyself an ambush for the city behind.
[3] καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰησοῦς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ πολεμιστὴς ὥστε ἀναβῆναι εἰς Γαι. ἐπέλεξεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς τριάκοντα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν δυνατοὺς ἐν ἰσχύι καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς νυκτός.
[3] And Joshua and all the men of war rose to go up to Gai; and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men, and he sent them away by night.
[4] καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς λέγων Ὑμεῖς ἐνεδρεύσατε ὀπίσω τῆς πόλεως· μὴ μακρὰν γίνεσθε ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἔσεσθε πάντες ἕτοιμοι.
[4] And he charged them, saying, Do ye lie in ambush behind the city: do not go far from the city, and ye shall all be ready.
[5] καὶ ἐγὼ καὶ πάντες οἱ μετ’ ἐμοῦ προσάξομεν πρὸς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ ἔσται ὡς ἂν ἐξέλθωσιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαι εἰς συνάντησιν ἡμῖν καθάπερ καὶ πρῴην, καὶ φευξόμεθα ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν.
[5] Land I and all with me will draw near to the city: and it shall come to pass when the inhabitants of Gai shall come forth to meet us, as before, that we will flee from before them.
[6] καὶ ὡς ἂν ἐξέλθωσιν ὀπίσω ἡμῶν, ἀποσπάσομεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως· καὶ ἐροῦσιν Φεύγουσιν οὗτοι ἀπὸ προσώπου ἡμῶν ὃν τρόπον καὶ ἔμπροσθεν.
[6] And when they shall come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, These men flee from before us, as also before.
[7] ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐξαναστήσεσθε ἐκ τῆς ἐνέδρας καὶ πορεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν πόλιν.
[7] And ye shall rise up out of the ambuscade, and go into the city.
[8] κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο ποιήσετε· ἰδοὺ ἐντέταλμαι ὑμῖν.
[8] Ye shall do according to this word, lo! I have commanded you.
[9] καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν εἰς τὴν ἐνέδραν καὶ ἐνεκάθισαν ἀνὰ μέσον Βαιθηλ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Γαι ἀπὸ θαλάσσης τῆς Γαι.
[9] And Joshua sent them, and they went to lie in ambush; and they lay between Baethel and Gai, westward of Gai.
[10] καὶ ὀρθρίσας Ἰησοῦς τὸ πρωῒ ἐπεσκέψατο τὸν λαόν· καὶ ἀνέβησαν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ λαοῦ ἐπὶ Γαι.
[10] And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people; and he went up, he and the elders before the people to Gai.
[11] καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ πολεμιστὴς μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἀνέβησαν καὶ πορευόμενοι ἦλθον ἐξ ἐναντίας τῆς πόλεως ἀπ’ ἀνατολῶν,
[11] And all the men of war went up with him, and they went forward and came over against the city eastward.
[12] καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα τῆς πόλεως ἀπὸ θαλάσσης.
[12] And the ambuscade was on the west side of the city.
[14] καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἶδεν βασιλεὺς Γαι, ἔσπευσεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῖς ἐπ’ εὐθείας εἰς τὸν πόλεμον, αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτὸς οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι ἔνεδρα αὐτῷ ἐστιν ὀπίσω τῆς πόλεως.
[14] And it came to pass when the king of Gai saw it, he hasted and went out to meet them direct to the battle, he and all the people that were with him: and he knew not that there was an ambuscade formed against him behind the city.
[15] καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἀνεχώρησεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ Ισραηλ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν.
[15] And Joshua and Israel saw, and retreated from before them.
[16] καὶ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ καὶ αὐτοὶ ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως·
[16] And they pursued after the children of Israel, and they themselves went to a distance from the city.
[17] οὐ κατελείφθη οὐθεὶς ἐν τῇ Γαι, ὃς οὐ κατεδίωξεν ὀπίσω Ισραηλ· καὶ κατέλιπον τὴν πόλιν ἀνεῳγμένην καὶ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω Ισραηλ.
[17] There was no one left in Gai who did not pursue after Israel; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
[18] καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Ἰησοῦν Ἔκτεινον τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐν τῷ γαίσῳ τῷ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν – εἰς γὰρ τὰς χεῖράς σου παραδέδωκα αὐτήν – , καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα ἐξαναστήσονται ἐν τάχει ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν. καὶ ἐξέτεινεν Ἰησοῦς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ, τὸν γαῖσον, ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν,
[18] And the Lord said to Joshua, Stretch forth thy hand with the spear that is in thy hand toward the city, for I have delivered it into thy hands; and the liers in wait shall rise up quickly out of their place.
[19] καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα ἐξανέστησαν ἐν τάχει ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν καὶ ἐξήλθοσαν, ὅτε ἐξέτεινεν τὴν χεῖρα, καὶ ἤλθοσαν ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν καὶ κατελάβοντο αὐτὴν καὶ σπεύσαντες ἐνέπρησαν τὴν πόλιν ἐν πυρί.
[19] And Joshua stretched out his hand and his spear toward the city, and the ambuscade rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and burnt the city with fire.
[20] καὶ περιβλέψαντες οἱ κάτοικοι Γαι εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτῶν καὶ ἐθεώρουν καπνὸν ἀναβαίνοντα ἐκ τῆς πόλεως εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν· καὶ οὐκέτι εἶχον ποῦ φύγωσιν ὧδε ἢ ὧδε.
[20] And when the inhabitants of Gai looked round behind them, then they saw the smoke going up out of the city to heaven, and they were no longer able to flee this way or that way.
[21] καὶ Ἰησοῦς καὶ πᾶς Ισραηλ εἶδον ὅτι ἔλαβον τὰ ἔνεδρα τὴν πόλιν καὶ ὅτι ἀνέβη ὁ καπνὸς τῆς πόλεως εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν, καὶ μεταβαλόμενοι ἐπάταξαν τοὺς ἄνδρας τῆς Γαι.
[21] And Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambuscade had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city went up to heaven; and they turned and smote the men of Gai.
[22] καὶ οὗτοι ἐξήλθοσαν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως εἰς συνάντησιν καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς παρεμβολῆς, οὗτοι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ οὗτοι ἐντεῦθεν· καὶ ἐπάταξαν ἕως τοῦ μὴ καταλειφθῆναι αὐτῶν σεσωσμένον καὶ διαπεφευγότα.
[22] And these came forth out of the city to meet them; and they were in the midst of the army, some being on this side, and some on that; and they smote them until there was not left of them one who survived and escaped.
[23] καὶ τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Γαι συνέλαβον ζῶντα καὶ προσήγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν.
[23] And they took the king of Gai alive, and brought him to Joshua.
[24] καὶ ὡς ἐπαύσαντο οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ ἀποκτέννοντες πάντας τοὺς ἐν τῇ Γαι τοὺς ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις καὶ ἐν τῷ ὄρει ἐπὶ τῆς καταβάσεως, οὗ κατεδίωξαν αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ αὐτῆς εἰς τέλος, καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν Ἰησοῦς εἰς Γαι καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὴν ἐν στόματι ῥομφαίας.
[24] And when the children of Israel had ceased slaying all that were in Gai, and in the fields, and in the mountain on the descent, from whence they pursued them even to the end, then Joshua returned to Gai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
[25] καὶ ἐγενήθησαν οἱ πεσόντες ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς καὶ ἕως γυναικὸς δώδεκα χιλιάδες, πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Γαι,
[25] And they that fell in that day, men and women, were twelve thousand: they slew all the inhabitants of Gai.
[27] πλὴν τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ τῶν σκύλων τῶν ἐν τῇ πόλει, πάντα ἃ ἐπρονόμευσαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ κατὰ πρόσταγμα κυρίου, ὃν τρόπον συνέταξεν κύριος τῷ Ἰησοῖ.
[27] Beside the spoils that were in the city, all things which the children of Israel took as spoil for themselves according to the command of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Joshua.
[28] καὶ ἐνεπύρισεν Ἰησοῦς τὴν πόλιν ἐν πυρί· χῶμα ἀοίκητον εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἔθηκεν αὐτὴν ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
[28] And Joshua burnt the city with fire: he made it an uninhabited heap for ever, even to this day.
[29] καὶ τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Γαι ἐκρέμασεν ἐπὶ ξύλου διδύμου, καὶ ἦν ἐπὶ τοῦ ξύλου ἕως ἑσπέρας· καὶ ἐπιδύνοντος τοῦ ἡλίου συνέταξεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ καθείλοσαν αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου καὶ ἔρριψαν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν βόθρον καὶ ἐπέστησαν αὐτῷ σωρὸν λίθων ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
[29] And he hanged the king of Gai on a gallows; and he remained on the tree till evening: and when the sun went down, Joshua gave charge, and they took down his body from the tree, and cast it into a pit, and they set over him a heap of stones until this day.
CHAPTER 9
[1] Ὡς δ’ ἤκουσαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν Αμορραίων οἱ ἐν τῷ πέραν τοῦ Ιορδάνου, οἱ ἐν τῇ ὀρεινῇ καὶ οἱ ἐν τῇ πεδινῇ καὶ οἱ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ παραλίᾳ τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς μεγάλης καὶ οἱ πρὸς τῷ Ἀντιλιβάνῳ, καὶ οἱ Χετταῖοι καὶ οἱ Χαναναῖοι καὶ οἱ Φερεζαῖοι καὶ οἱ Ευαῖοι καὶ οἱ Αμορραῖοι καὶ οἱ Γεργεσαῖοι καὶ οἱ Ιεβουσαῖοι,
And when the kings of the Amorites on the other side of Jordan, who were in the mountain country, and in the plain, and in all the coast of the great sea, and those who were near Antilibanus, and the Chettites, and the Chananites, and the Pherezites, and the Evites, and the Amorites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites, heard of it,
[2] συνήλθοσαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἐκπολεμῆσαι Ἰησοῦν καὶ Ισραηλ ἅμα πάντες.
they came all together at the same time to make war against Joshua and Israel.
[3] Τότε ᾠκοδόμησεν Ἰησοῦς θυσιαστήριον κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ Ισραηλ ἐν ὄρει Γαιβαλ,
Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel in mount Gaebal,
[4] καθότι ἐνετείλατο Μωϋσῆς ὁ θεράπων κυρίου τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ, καθὰ γέγραπται ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Μωυσῆ, θυσιαστήριον λίθων ὁλοκλήρων, ἐφ’ οὓς οὐκ ἐπεβλήθη σίδηρος, καὶ ἀνεβίβασεν ἐκεῖ ὁλοκαυτώματα κυρίῳ καὶ θυσίαν σωτηρίου.
as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, on which iron had not been lifted up; and he offered there whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord, and a peace-offering.
[5] καὶ ἔγραψεν Ἰησοῦς ἐπὶ τῶν λίθων τὸ δευτερονόμιον, νόμον Μωυσῆ, ὃν ἔγραψεν ἐνώπιον υἱῶν Ισραηλ.
And Joshua wrote upon the stones a copy of the law, even the law of Moses, before the children of Israel.
[6] καὶ πᾶς Ισραηλ καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ δικασταὶ καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν παρεπορεύοντο ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν τῆς κιβωτοῦ ἀπέναντι, καὶ οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ Λευῖται ἦραν τὴν κιβωτὸν τῆς διαθήκης κυρίου, καὶ ὁ προσήλυτος καὶ ὁ αὐτόχθων, οἳ ἦσαν ἥμισυ πλησίον ὄρους Γαριζιν, καὶ οἳ ἦσαν ἥμισυ πλησίον ὄρους Γαιβαλ, καθότι ἐνετείλατο Μωϋσῆς ὁ θεράπων κυρίου εὐλογῆσαι τὸν λαὸν ἐν πρώτοις.
And all Israel, and their elders, and their judges, and their scribes, passed on one side and on the other before the ark; and the priests and the Levites took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord; and the stranger and the native were there, who were half of them near mount Garizin, and half near mount Gaebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded at first, to bless the people.
[7] καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα οὕτως ἀνέγνω Ἰησοῦς πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ νόμου τούτου, τὰς εὐλογίας καὶ τὰς κατάρας, κατὰ πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Μωυσῆ·
And afterwards Joshua read accordingly all the words of this law, the blessings and the curses, according to all things written in the law of Moses.
[8] οὐκ ἦν ῥῆμα ἀπὸ πάντων, ὧν ἐνετείλατο Μωϋσῆς τῷ Ἰησοῖ, ὃ οὐκ ἀνέγνω Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὰ ὦτα πάσης ἐκκλησίας υἱῶν Ισραηλ, τοῖς ἀνδράσιν καὶ ταῖς γυναιξὶν καὶ τοῖς παιδίοις καὶ τοῖς προσηλύτοις τοῖς προσπορευομένοις τῷ Ισραηλ.
There was not a word of all that Moses charged Joshua, which Joshua read not in the ears of all the assembly of the children of Israel, the men, and the women, and the children, and the strangers that joined themselves to Israel.
[9] Καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαβαων ἤκουσαν πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησεν κύριος τῇ Ιεριχω καὶ τῇ Γαι.
And the inhabitants of Gabaon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Gai.
[10] καὶ ἐποίησαν καί γε αὐτοὶ μετὰ πανουργίας καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐπεσιτίσαντο καὶ ἡτοιμάσαντο καὶ λαβόντες σάκκους παλαιοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ὄνων αὐτῶν καὶ ἀσκοὺς οἴνου παλαιοὺς καὶ κατερρωγότας ἀποδεδεμένους,
And they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and rent and patched bottles of wine,
[11] καὶ τὰ κοῖλα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ σανδάλια αὐτῶν παλαιὰ καὶ καταπεπελματωμένα ἐν τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν πεπαλαιωμένα ἐπάνω αὐτῶν, καὶ ὁ ἄρτος αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐπισιτισμοῦ ξηρὸς καὶ εὐρωτιῶν καὶ βεβρωμένος.
and the upper part of their shoes and their sandals old and clouted on their feet, and their garments ld upon them — and the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy and corrupt.
[12] καὶ ἤλθοσαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν Ισραηλ εἰς Γαλγαλα καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν καὶ Ισραηλ Ἑκ γῆς μακρόθεν ἥκαμεν, καὶ νῦν διάθεσθε ἡμῖν διαθήκην.
And they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel to Galgala, and said to Joshua and Israel, We are come from a far land: now then make a covenant with us.
[13] καὶ εἶπαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ πρὸς τὸν Χορραῖον Ὅρα μὴ ἐν ἐμοὶ κατοικεῖς, καὶ πῶς σοι διαθῶμαι διαθήκην;
And the children of Israel said to the Chorrhaean, You may perhaps, dwell amongst us; and how should I make a covenant with you?
[14] καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν Οἰκέται σού ἐσμεν. καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς Πόθεν ἐστὲ καὶ πόθεν παραγεγόνατε;
