  29. Cloth of gold sample (15 x 17cm), Italian, late fifteenth century. Richard, Duke of York, left sanctuary at Beaulieu Abbey to meet Henry VII wearing cloth of gold, which was permitted only to royalty in the late fifteenth century. Gold (or sometimes silver) threads were woven into a precious fabric, usually silk, creating a stiff and heavy (and very expensive) material. (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Acc. No. 1062–1900)

  30. Tyburn, London, an ancient place of execution and probable execution site of Richard, Duke of York, on 23 November 1499 (aged 26). ‘Tyburn Tree’ was the colloquial name for the famous Tyburn gallows. This stone marker is located in the pavement at the top of Edgware Road. (Philippa Langley)

  31. The site of Austin Friars church, now the Dutch Church, London. The original medieval friary church was rebuilt following a fire in 1862, but was then flattened by a parachute bomb during the Blitz in the Second World War. It was rebuilt (with a slightly smaller area) in 1950–54. It is the probable burial location of Richard, Duke of York (in exterior passageway). (Philippa Langley)
