Piper activated her communicator while she plodded through the thick vegetation. “Echo?”
“Yes, how may I assist you?”
“Is there are drone nearby that can look ahead for us? These fiends are coming from somewhere close.”
“I’ve scanned the network. The nearest drone is five miles away. It is one of the slower ones, and will take longer to get to you. I made Mason aware, but he didn’t want to spend any reward points to upgrade the speed. He said that we didn’t need it to go any faster. You can blame this inconvenience on him.”

Echo agreed. “I thought it was rather peculiar. It was a tiny amount of reward points.”
“I bet he would shit bricks if he knew there were fiends inside the walls,” Hestia added.
“I think defecating bricks would be a larger concern for him,” Echo said nonchalantly..
“It’s an expression. I learned it from Mason. He won’t literally shit bricks.”
“That’s a relief,” replied Echo. “That would be a very painful problem to have.”
Selene chuckled. “I’m surrounded by crazy people.”
Two more shots were fired from Piper’s plasma rifle, killing two more fiends that were coming through the bushes. “Look! There’s an orange glow. It’s faint right now, but I can see it.”
Selene wiped the fog from her red glasses and squinted. “Ah, yeah, I see it. What do you think it is?”
“I see nothing,” Hestia replied in a confused tone.
“Aren’t cheetahs supposed to have good eyesight?” Selene asked.
“I have great eyesight.”
“Evidently not, because you can’t see it.”
“I think that you’re just looking in the wrong spot. There is something medically wrong with you if you can’t see that big ass orange glow,” Selene pointed again and sighed, “Over there, right there.”
Hestia nodded. “Yeah, I was looking in the wrong spot.”

Selene and Hestia nodded and double checked their weapons. Piper moved ahead first and pushed through some vines. “It’s a hole,” Piper whispered, followed by a round to a fiend’s head that was climbing out of the newly found hole.
“Get back, you’re gonna fall in!” Hestia shouted.

Piper rolled her eyes and looked back at the hole. She heard and buzzing sound overhead and looked up. The drone that Echo sent their way hovered right about the trees.
“Piper, are you available?” Echo asked.
“Yeah, your drone just showed up,” Piper replied.
“That’s why I’m contacting you. I’m watching the scene, and I am trying to analyze this hole.”
“How far do you think it goes down?” Piper asked.
“Again, I am trying to analyze this hole. I do not have any information at this time.”
“Why did you call me then?” Piper eyerolled.
“To inform you that I am aware there is a hole, and I’m analyzing it.”
“Okay, don’t call back until you have something.”
“Affirmative.”
Piper looked at Hestia and Selene, shaking her head. “That little twerp can be such a smartass.”
“So we’re just sitting here until he calls back?” Hestia asked.
Selene fired at another climbing fiend severing its arm sending the monster to its death.”
The drone descended from above the trees to their position. The trio just stared in silence, wondering what it was doing. Echo must have been sending the drone into the hole, which Piper thought was a great idea. The drone could see with its special infrared vision capabilities, so there was no need for it to activate its light system. The girls could hear screeches and growls from below as the fiends saw the strange thing entering their hole.
Chapter Fourteen
We found a nice spot hidden from sight off the Crimson Bone Road to stop for the night. Most of the population of Florida live in villages, small towns, or the larger cities.
