Cole nods, “You’ve got my word.”
“Good, now, I smell a burger calling my stomach, and I’m gonna address that. And, Cole,” he says with a hand on his shoulder once more, “if you ever want to talk about your dad just call me. I know more than you might think. It might hold you over until you get the chance to meet him.” Once Cole nods, Dad pats him on the shoulder and then leaves.
I crane my head to look up at him, and he is already smiling down at me, there must be so much going through his mind, so what he says next catches me off guard, “I’m so damn proud of you, sweetheart. Poppy was completely caught off guard,” he bends down to touch his lips to mine, this time it’s brief.
“I’m proud of me too,” I laugh.
“I love you so damn much, you know that?”
“With every fiber of my being.”
