Then I have a question of my own. “How did you even get up here?”

His eyes focus on me, “I bought the security guy downstairs off. He texted me last night when she came home. It was far too easy; everyone has a price.”

I growl. “It's pricks like you that are turning the world to shit. Thinking you can get away with anything because you've got printed paper in a metal vault."

"It makes the world go round. You’re either ignorant of how the world works, or you don't have any to your name."

My mouth tightens. "Fuck you," I grit out.

Then he starts to laugh. "You've given yourself away," he looks at Em right in time to receive the smack he deserves across his face. That's my girl.

"You're not even half the man he is. Money doesn’t make you into a decent human being."

His eyes are wide, his hand cupping his reddening cheek, and he’s shaking his head from side to side as if dazed. Em does know how to lay it on you. While he stands in shock, I’ve sidled up beside her. I grip her hips to pull her up against me, my erection returning, and I make sure she knows what I intend as soon as this prick leaves.

  “Bitch,” he hisses.

“Hey,” I bark, “that’s taking it too fucking far,” with a quick side step I’m around Em and my fist grips the front of his suit.

He pushes against my hand, but I only grip harder. “This is an O’Connor you uncivilized animal! It costs more than your useless existence! Let go or I'll sue you for the four grand it's worth!"

My fist causes a satisfying crack when it meets his face. I let go only to adjust my hand onto the back of his neck as I help him stumble out the door as he moans around his hand. "Don't come back," I say just as he turns to have the door slammed in his face.

After a minute he starts hitting on the door again, shouting her name in between threats to my life and I’m half-tempted to show him a real lesson. Instead I grab hold of her and pin her against the door. My mouth hovers next to her ear, breath heavy with my excitement.

My thumb caresses her bottom lip. “These lips are mine. Mine to kiss, mine to suck, mine to fuck,” I say the last a little louder. I pull back and tug on the string of her robe, letting it fall open, revealing her to my hungry gaze.

I’m a sick prick knowing her ex is behind this door, still rattling it with his fists. My hands push the robe further apart, and I cup a breast, her nipple already taut, ready for my attention as I squeeze it roughly. Her little gasp tightens my balls, “these are mine too. Mine to suck, to nibble, mine to handle as I fucking please,” my lips reveal a toothy grin, right before I bend to take a nipple into my mouth. Her back arches, her fingers finding purchase in my hair. Just as she lets out a breathy moan I pull back. Her eyes are half-lidded as I let my hand release her breast only to go south.

My hand cups her sex, already wet around my wandering middle finger, “and this pussy is mine, Em. Mine to eat, to taste, to fuck until the inside walls are carved out to only take my dick.” I can tell by how her eyes drift close, and her teeth bite her bottom lip that she loves my crude words. My wandering finger has gained an accomplice as they find their way to her insides. She gasps loud and her palms hit just as hard as her ex’s fists are banging against the opposite side. For a moment it’s quiet on both sides, but I worm another moan from her before I pull my finger out that’s loud enough to be heard in the hall. My smile can’t be helped. I run my hands up her sides, and roam her body.

“Your body is mine Em. Mine to own and love.”

  “Yes,” she breaths.

“I’m going to fuck you, and I want you to scream my name every time you cum so the whole world knows the truth of it.” Not bothering to take my boxers down I pull myself free. Hiking up one of her legs around my hip, with one fluid motion I thrust into her, and her body hits the door with a resounding thud.

Twack, twack, go my balls as they connect with her skin as I piston harder, faster into her until it’s almost as loud as the sound of the door rattling behind us.

“Oh God,” her fingers dig into my shoulders as her other leg soon comes up around me, connecting behind me and I slide even deeper. She feels so fucking tight around me, and I can feel the beginnings of her first orgasm.

“Cole, oh Cole!” she screams, and I kiss the column of her neck as my ears ring with her shout.

“That’s right, sweetheart, you like how I fuck you don’t you? Who do you belong to?”

“You, oh fuck, Cole, you feel so good,” she moans.

Cupping either ass cheek I rock her back and forth making our pace even faster, needing to ruin her for anyone else. “How does that feel, Em, tell me do you like it when I fuck you rough like this?” the end of the question comes out as a growl, my own pleasure ratcheting up as her little sounds drive me under like a drug.

“Yes,” she moans. Her pussy clenches around me, begging me to cum inside. I let out my own moan, finding her pussy most inviting, “Cole,” she pants out as her head jerks from one side to the other, her nails digging even deeper, just as her sweet hot pussy clutches hard around me.

“Fucking Christ,” I bite out as I find my release.

It takes us several minutes to catch our breath, and for me to straighten to release her to the floor. Somewhere in the middle I had forgotten why I had decided to take her up against this door, but when no noise comes from the other side, I determine it got good results. I have a feeling that it won’t be the last I hear from Adrian, but for now, I'm satisfied.

“Sorry about that,” she says as she looks up at me through heavy lashes. I drop my head down and kiss her, for a minute I get lost in the softness of it and the little noises she makes.

“I’m glad I was here to take out the trash.”

She takes my hand and leads me back to the bedroom where she makes us lay back under the covers. Me the big spoon, her the little one. For a while we say nothing, content in just being in one another's arms.

“I wish we didn't have to go,” she whispers into the room.

I kiss the spot where her neck and shoulder meet. “Me too. What time do you think we should head out?”

She arches away from me to grab her phone, and as her screen lights up, she groans, “We should probably leave in the next hour at the latest or we will get stuck by the lunch hour traffic which can be nearly as bad as rush hour.”

At the mention of food my stomach growls a protest. She laughs, “I should probably feed you before we go through. It’s a shame we can’t drive there together.”

We walk towards her kitchen a few minutes and a few clothes later. Of course, she doesn’t have much as food goes since she’s not been home for a few weeks, but cereal suits me just fine, though it tastes a little weird but apparently almond milk stays good a fucking long time. We eat mostly in silence, probably due to where our thoughts have wandered. I’ve already made my decision of where I want to be, where I want to go, as soon as this wedding is over, but I can’t know for sure if she will be alright with it. I just know I don’t want to be apart from her ever again. I’ve got a shit ton of time to make up for, what better place to do that than being here, with her, in her place.

I jolt from my thoughts as my phone rings. Pulling it out of my pocket, Vince's number lights up the screen. "Hey."

"We know who slashed your tires."

  “Yeah? Who?”

“Danny Burke. You know why he’d want to damage your property?”

“Danny? As in the owner of Danny’s?”

“Yeah, one and the same. So do you know him?”

I nod, “Yep. Dated his sister for a while, it didn’t end well, seems he’s still sore about it.”

  “Want to press charges?”

“No, as long as it ends up being a one-time thing.”

“I’ll stop by to make sure he understands that.”

“Vince, you don’t need to do that.”

“Actually, it’s part of the job. It’ll be better that he realizes how close he was to being in custody. He’s got a record; I think it’s damn lucky that slashing your tires is all he did.”

I nod again. “That I can believe. Thanks for calling.”

  “Yeah sure thing."

I fill Em in as soon as I get off the call. ‘Wow, I didn’t see that coming.”

“I should have figured it out sooner, though I’m no one’s favorite person, it could have been too many people to count.”

She puts her hand on my arm. “You’re my favorite person,” she leans in and gives me a quick kiss before we return to our breakfast.

Leaving her leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, even with the knowledge I’ll see her again only a few hours from now.

“Drive safe,” she says as I strap on my helmet.

“You too,” I kiss her before revving my engine to life. I wait until she’s in her car, buckled in before I pull away from the curb. Being that I’m on my bike I lose sight of her car in my rear-view mirror as I weave through traffic.

  Chapter 19

I feel like I’m trying to do life in an hour, but everything stops when I put my dress on to only find it’s a size to big. The simple chiffon dress that is supposed to cinch in at the waist looks more like a sack than a dress. I twist and turn as I look at myself in the mirror and the panic starts to grip me.

“Emmy?” Lidia says from behind me, waving off the person doing her hair. “What is that?”

“My dress...Oh my God, Lidia, I’m hideous.”

She starts to laugh. “Thank goodness you’re not the one getting married.”

Tears come to my eyes, and my lip starts to tremble. Lidia sobers. “Now don’t be a jerk and take my thunder away. If anyone is going to cry at this wedding, it’s going to be me. Now take that thing off, and hand it over.”

“What…” I look around the room, wiping the premature tears from my eyes.

“Shut up and just do what I say. There are only girls in here, and they have the same parts you do.”

Welp, she’s got that right, so I do as she says, and I hand her the dress. After a minute she has the piece of fabric bunched in between her thumb and index finger and hands it back, “hold this,” her head swivels until her eyes land on her purse, “Brook!”

“Yes?” she pokes her head up from whatever task Lidia has given her.

“Can you get my sewing kit from my bag, pleeeasseee?”

“Yep,” she grunts as she gets up, “one sec…”

A few seconds later, Lidia has the thread put through the eye of the needle and is holding out her hand towards the dress.

“A ladder stitch will have this baby ready to go in no time,” she says as she slips the thread through the dress.

  "How are you so calm?"

"My dress fits," she says but I see her smile. She's such a smartass.

  "I'm serious."

She stops sewing and looks at me, "because I know it's right. I've spent most of my life without family, a connection, and I found that and more with them," her brows furrow, "Emmy, please tell me you've made a decision, you've been here for weeks, and for you to still not be sure about Cole should already make it clear what you should do."

"No," I shake my head, "I know what I want, I just wish he’d answer his phone. I haven't talked to him since yesterday after leaving my apartment.” The worry I’ve felt since yesterday creeps back to take over, “I've just never seen a bride so calm."

She rolls her eyes and looks back down at my dress, her hands working again, "I have butterflies, but I'm not nervous to start our lives together. I'm excited for it to begin," she pulls on the thread, ties it off and cuts the end with her teeth. Fluttering the dress out between us. "Now try it."

I slip it on, "You're a miracle worker! It fits perfectly," I run my hands down the dress and twirl in front of the mirror, "thank you."

  "You're lucky I can sew."

"I'm lucky to have you as my best friend."

Sucking on her bottom lip she starts to fan her face. "Stop it, no crying today, dammit."

"Sorry, now let's get you hitched. I'll go back out there and check on things. Do you need anything?"

"Anything other than the champagne they try to keep giving me. Everyone seems to believe I have to be drunk to get married."

"Hey! I'm only trying to help!" Brook says over her full glass of the stuff; she attempts to hide a smile. I wonder if she realizes she's not fooling anyone.

Snorting a laugh, I leave with assurances that I'm on it, "oph," I grunt as I walk into someone on my way out, "Sara! Sorry."

She waves me off, "I should be the one to say I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. I swear I'm even more distracted without Camilla, like a part is missing."

  “Where is she?”

“Oh she’s with Vince, sleeping in his arms. I swear it’s the only place she is quiet. I have no idea how he does it,” she shakes her head, then smiles, and points beyond me, “how is she?"

"Oh she's fine. The calmest bride I've ever seen. For a woman scared of commitment and entanglement until recently, she sure is outshining us all."

"Figures," she laughs, "I'll just slide in to see if I can't be of help," she winks, "see you in a bit."

"Hey, one thing, where is Vince? I need to ask him for a favor."

"I left him in the yard, I doubt he's gone far."

  "Alright, thanks."

I make it halfway to the back door when my name is called. I twist around. “Hi, Daddy."

  "Am I on time?"

"As if Mama M would allow you to be late," I look over at her and she's smiling like a Cheshire cat, thoroughly pleased. I lean in and give her a kiss on her cheek.

"So, Lidia is almost ready then?"

"Don't worry, she'll be ready when you walk her down the aisle," I say before I lean over and give him a kiss, "Momma M you can go in and chat with her if you want. I'll be in there in a few."

"I'll do that," she shuffles away.

I look up at my father. " You alright? You seem a little stressed."

  "I'm fine."

"Mmhhmm," I lean in, "I'm glad you're here to walk her down the aisle," his cheeks redden at the edges of his white beard, "go find a use for yourself. We've only got a half hour to go."

I make it outside this time without any interruptions and spot him right away, "Hey, Vince."

He turns to look at me, Camilla cradled in a blanket, her mouth moving and emitting a sound as if she were sucking on a bottle. She’s so adorable. "Hey Em, how's the bride?"

My head jerks up to look at him again. "Ready to be married already. How about the grooms?"

  "Same."

"Good to know no one has any feet we need to convince warm."

"Yeah, good thing too, feet freak me out," he shivers while making a face, and I laugh.

"Wow," I take a second to look around, "it looks amazing out here. You guys did a bunch since last night."

The aisle up to the arch is lined with light green and white flowers. Each arrangement set as a row of chairs start. The arch painted as white as the chairs and covered in a sheer white fabric peeking out of the same flowers arranged on the ground. Simple, elegant, perfect for Lidia's wedding. On the other side of the yard lays a false wood floor for dancing, a few tables with white clothes draped over them on the perimeter without chairs, a small jukebox, and coolers. Full of alcohol most likely. The caterer’s table already set by the coolers, the cake at the very end standing two cakes high. There are people milling about in little clusters, and it seems to me by the sheer size of the groups most of the guests, if not all were already here.

"Yep, I think we pulled it off. So where's Chancy? I thought he was bringing the ice for the coolers."

"You haven't heard from him either?"

He shakes his head. "No, and apparently Tank has been trying since Wednesday to get ahold of him."

My cheeks are hot as I respond, "I can account for his whereabouts Wednesday night, and into Thursday morning, but I haven't heard from him since. That's why I came to find you. Is there anything you can do to find him?"

"Yeah, I'll see what I can find out."

I touch his forearm, "Thank you, you’ll let me know?"

  He straightens. "Yeah, sure thing."

Moving my hand away, I smile. "Thanks. Now I've got maid of honor duties to do. See you later." Though he just promised, 'later' holds a double meaning. God, I hope he can find out something soon.

Grabbing a water from the kitchen I head back to Lidia's room. "Everything is running smoothly," I say to the room. I sidle up to Momma M and whisper in her ear about getting Dad to rush out and get ice.

You can never have too much ice. Why was I clinging to the idea Cole would still make it? Something has to be wrong. He wouldn't have tried so damn hard to have me, if once he had, just turn around to let me go. Would he? No way, something’s wrong, but I can't worry about that now.

"Don't you worry, baby, I'll go grab some. Be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail," she squeezes my hand before slipping silently out of the room.

Once I get close enough to hand Lidia her water, she smirks. “No reason to hide anything from me. The walls don’t even protect the sounds coming from outside.”

“Good to know you’re up to date.”

“You’ll have to thank Momma M for running to get the ice for use. I wonder what’s keeping Cole?”

Bringing my fingers up to my mouth I start to nibble on my fingernails, “I don’t know. I just wish he’d text me back. I hope that Vince can find out what’s keeping him. I wouldn’t put it past Adrian to press charges and Cole using his one phone call to reach someone that couldn’t come to the phone.”

  “Why wouldn’t he call you?”

“Well my phone was dead, remember, until I got back here yesterday afternoon. He would have known that.”

“Oh yeah, that’s right. Well, Vince is good, he’ll figure it out,” she rubs a hand down my arm, than her grip gets rough as she pulls my fingers from my mouth, “that’s enough of that, you just got a manicure,” she rolls her eyes and gets up from her chair, “help me into this thing,” she points at her dress that hangs by the full length mirror.

As I loop the last pearl button into place I step back. Her hair that had grown out a bit since she stayed with me in Chicago flows in little ringlets down to her shoulder blades, a braid loops around and the same types of flowers outside are pinned in a simple pattern. The off-white dress looks even more perfect than it did when she first tried it on. Just the right amount of lace, and it beautifully hugs all her curves. Her makeup simply done, but the most brilliant thing is her smile. She seems so happy, the happiest I’ve ever seen her, and I’m so glad to be a part of this day to see it.
