I shielded my eyes and looked around. Most of my team were sitting up and chatting. Some were still asleep. I moved to the edge of my bed and, testing my feet, stood.

Then I warily made my way out onto the floor to a few glances off the nursing team. I tucked my head down and made a beeline for Tyto before anyone else could stop me.

He sat with Dylan. “Hey,” I said.

Dylan patted the bed, and I sat without thinking, and he put his hand on mine.

  “For Hiroto,” he said.

I squeezed it. “Thanks, and I need it too.” I winked at him, then looked at Tyto. “We all okay?”

Tyto nodded. “Reports are going to Ohara and Xirob. They’re pooling everything and said they’d see us in a few hours. If we were up to it, that is?”

I nodded, glancing around, quickly accessing the whole team’s health stats.

“Anything I need to know now?” I asked.

Tyto shook his head. “I don’t think so. I have a question though . . . how the hell did you get through to Edward?”

“I saw something in his eyes,” I said. “Something that wanted what we have, but he just didn’t know what it entailed.”

“That must have been a hell of a reveal to him when he opened his mind and mega to the rest of his team.”

I smiled and glanced over to where he was sleeping. “Yeah, I bet. I think they’ll respect him even more now, though. And damn, he can fight!”

Tyto nodded. “His skills were never in question.”

“No, they weren’t, he really proved that today. He was a hundred percent with me.”

“Without him, even with any of the others, we wouldn’t have gotten out.”

  I nodded. “I know.”

Doctor Herin then made his way over with Trin. “Glad you’re up. Would you have a few minutes for me?”

Dylan let go of my hand, and I never even realised he’d still got hold of it.

“Back in a bit,” I said, and I moved to follow the doctor.

He took me to the other side of the medical unit where Morgan was hunched over, studying a data pad. When we approached, she looked up and smiled.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, instantly nervous.

“Nothing,” she said. Then added, “Much. Sit.”

She patted the seat next to her, and I took it.

“We watched everyone through the latest rift breach as you know we do anyway, but these are the stats of everyone around you.”

“Those closer to me were drawing kenosi from the rift like I was?”

“It seems that way,” Morgan said. “I don’t know if that’s because of you, or just the circumstances, if it will ever happen again.”

I nodded. “Yeah, it’s probably something linked to me. In the rift, we had to use everything we had to kill that thing.”

“We don’t know if you did kill it, only that the rift closed with its health at two percent.”

  “Damn, we didn’t?”

Herin shook his head. There was movement behind me. Xirob.

He put a hand on my chair and looked over the figures. “We believe it will try again,” he said. “When it’s had time to recoup.”

  “Crap, what about our plan?”

“Ohara and our uncle are going over the numbers. She thinks you have time. But you have to leave now.”

  “We’re not ready, right?”

“Mostly ready.” Hiroto’s face popped up on the screen before us. “The Sitha are moving into position, the ship’s loading. We’re a few weeks off being perfect, but we could leave sooner. We just have to make the call.”

I looked at Xirob. “We move now,” I said. “No waiting, no perfect. As soon as we can get those names, we go.”

Xirob nodded. “We knew you’d say that. Come. Ohara and my uncle await your final consult.”

Herin touched my arm. “My name is on the list,” he said. “As much as being bonded to a Sitha worries me, I’m with you.”

I smiled at him. “Get everything you need together, get my team up and on their feet. This is it. We are Earthbound.”

  Winter Harvest

Killing machines. Shadow organizations. A desperate attempt to stay sane.

After failing the most important exam of his life, Kyle is forced into a VR war. Now, he fights on the front lines as cannon fodder for what he always assumed was the government, losing a little part of his memories with every virtual death.

When the mission he’s on goes wrong, Kyle is stranded on a planet far from his original destination. Finally given a chance to make an impression in the organization, Kyle will have to risk his mind for a chance at salvation.

If he fails, he'll lose all will to resist: making him the perfect soldier.

  Spring Mutiny

A new, fertile world. Exposed identities. Deep debt to a Mech Lord.

After escaping with the information they needed, Kyle and his team must plan their next move. While working hard to discover many things about himself, his shipmates, and his denti body, Kyle finds not one… but three stowaways.

An exotic female Kiain who helps him unlock his Kenosi potential, and a deadly Sitha mother protecting her young son. He doesn’t throw them out of the airlock, but pirate and monster infested space isn’t exactly the safest place to be raising a child.

Now fully exposed to their overlords, Kyle doesn’t hold back. He places a winning bid on several top tier Mechs in an obscure part of the galaxy. The final price leaves them with a mission they can’t afford to turn down: they need to rescue the daughter of the local Mech Lord.

Pitted against a heavily fortified base, they need to fight with everything they have to survive.

  Summer Friction

Bounty hunters. A dying species. Upgrades required.

Kyle and the crew have one chance to win the war on Tolsa. They are constantly moving between battlefields and helping the rebels in a desperate bid to find parts that they need, only ever staying a single step ahead of Motaki. One slip-up, and Kyle's team will be surrounded on all sides.

With no respawn facilities - and trapped by bounty hunters - Kyle and his crew are torn between their own safety and doing the right thing. Cure a dying species, or snatch the finest mech they've ever seen. Dejected and adrift, the search for upgrades and weaponry helps the goals of the crew align. That's for the best, since Kyle will need to pull out every skill he has in the hope that they can create a future for themselves. No matter what they choose to do during the rebellion, they'll need to make a deal with the M-Wolf leader.

With blood on his hands and a full cargo hold, Kyle can only hope that they can leave Tolsa with a clear conscience.

  Autumn Infernos

Rumors and rebellion. Truths and lies. Allies and choices.

Their work complete, Kyle and his guild leave Tolsa. The rebellion against Arndale is spreading, the economy is destroyed. They took everyone with them when they fled the doomed world, including their new allies the M-Wolves. Kyle wants to begin his final missions: rescue his familiar, meet Motaki’s mech challenge, and save the Denti homeworld.

Yet, Kyle is nowhere near ready, and he knows it. They must upgrade and train every possible second, or everything will be lost. Arndale has other plans, and attacks the orphans on Cinna forcing Kyle to reverse course. With no choice but to throw everything he has into defending those he really cares for, Kyle risks everything for the greater good.

Time is running out and the Sitha’s life is fading fast. Pushing himself and his team to the maximum, Kyle must make the ultimate sacrifices, get to that mech arena, and defeat Arndale once and for all.

Steel Hearts - Spin off -

Time to rendezvous: seven weeks. Failure imminent.

Lyndsey Collins is in a big damn hurry. She's on the wrong side of the galaxy — and running out of time.

Her primary mission — find Kyle Ranz — has been delayed and jeopardised by another equally important one: to capture a prototype mech that's guaranteed to wreak havoc in the Messa system.

On board the battleship Abyssinian, Lyndsey's loyalties to unexpected friends will be brutally tested against her resolve to get to Kyle. With every delay and detour, her good options all fade away like screaming into the vacuum of space.

And thanks to the mixed blessing of Future Insight, she knows that people are going to die — and her choices will determine who.

Lyndsey faces insurmountable odds from threats both internal and external and shows all why she's earned her Steel Hearts.
