“What are you looking at?” Cassandra asked, walking up behind him, and he turned to smile at her, noticing how all the Christmas lights reflected in her eyes, turning them into sparkling honey.
“All of this,” he said, gesturing around the room. “You know… you said I live a charmed life, and I’m not arguing that in general, but in this case, I think you may have had it backwards. All of this— this is the kind of Christmas I’ve seen on TV and in movies, and I thought it was all bullshit. Just Hollywood painting a pretty picture of what everyone wishes the holidays were like… but you have it.”
“Logan…” She moved closer to him, winding her arm around his waist, and he let his drape around her shoulders, holding her close as his eyes continued to move over the little ornaments, especially the ones with pictures tucked inside them. Capturing Cassandra at different ages through the years, an annual testament to just how much her parents loved her.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to say anything.” Turning, he slid his hands down her arms until he could switch to her waist, pulling her just a little closer. She had a slight frown, the tension focused between her eyebrows, and he had a pretty good idea of what she was thinking about.
His family, the Christmas stuff he’d shared with her, but none of that really bothered him. He’d moved on from wishing he had different parents a long time ago.
All he could think about now was how lucky he was to find her, to fall in love with her, to earn her trust enough that she would bring him here, around the people most important to her. To give him a real Christmas, around people who love each other.
“I just wanted you to know that I get it, and I love you even more for bringing me here.”
“I love you too, Logan,” she said, smiling at him a little as she closed the gap between them. “I have to admit though… I was definitely worried you’d panic and bail back to L.A. Especially after my brothers said whatever they did.”
“They just told me how much they love you, and it’s true. Everyone here loves you. They love each other.”
“It’s a family,” Cassandra filled in, and he chuckled a little.
“I know.” He shrugged, glancing out at all the decorations on the front lawn, glowing warmly in a multi-colored rainbow of Christmas joy. “I guess I’m just saying thank you for wanting me to be a part of your family this week.”
“Only this week?” she asked, pressing more firmly against him as her lips came dangerously close to his. “Logan, if you think you’re getting off that easy… you have no idea what you’re in for.”
He chuckled, squeezing her tight. “If I’m lucky enough to be with you, to be a part of this family, years from now. Then I’ll admit you’re right about me.”
“About what?”
“Well, if I’m still with you, singing carols in this room ten, fifteen, twenty Christmases from now… that will definitely be a charmed life. Because I’ll have lived it with you.”
He kissed her before she could sass him, or crack another joke, and instead he got the softest moan from her lips as she wrapped her arms around his neck, letting him take control of the kiss. It was as close to perfect as he could imagine. Probably because it had been messy, disorganized, a little crazy, but completely filled with love.
And what more could he ever want?
