Galius Karkle wasn’t in his office, but Gags learned that the lawyer had taken up residence in the castle where Gags grew up. They found Galius repairing a window sash in the kitchen.

“Gags!” Galius said. “I never did think you were dead, but I had no proof. You are the best evidence I can think of.” Galius brushed the dust off his hands and shook both of Gags’s hands. “I could have a craftsman fix this, but I enjoy fixing real things and legal problems.”

They sat at the kitchen table, and Gags gave Galius a brief report.

The lawyer looked admiringly at Miria. “He went through a great deal to rescue you, Miria,” Galius said. “Everyone is going to tell you that.”

“They already have,” Miria said. She gave Gags a smile from across the table. “I still have a lot to work out. I hope you will help me with that.”

Galius looked at Gags, who nodded slightly. “We certainly will. Now, to get back to your situation. First, we will send an affidavit to King Horius with your signature and seal. That should stop Bottle’s action. I am convinced he had worked something out with your stepmother to annex part of your fief to his. Karkle Cross touches Puddlebottom, his fief, to the southeast.

“How did he have the power to shut down my agency?” Gags asked.

“I shut it down to preserve the agency assets if you didn’t turn up. The agency and your manor are no longer joined. I’m sorry that some of your staff didn’t like it and left. I talked to Pepper and Portia before I did.”

“None of my messages made it through,” Gags said.

  “How many did you send?”

“Four or five over three months,” Gags said.

Galius pursed his lips. “They would have gone through the Yearsend post. I suggest you send a message that I can track so we can catch the culprit.”

Otto grinned. “Good idea.” His grin faded. “There are rats everywhere, even on Peria. I thought I left them behind in Baxter.”

“Rats, Rats everywhere, and not a piece of cheese to eat,” Lucian said.

Miria covered her mouth as she laughed.

“Can I move back into the manor?” Gags asked.

“As long as you can stay alive. Let’s get the document drafted, signed, and sealed before you leave.”

Gags didn’t need to race to the manor, so they rode in higher spirits along the main road from Karkle Cross to Yearsend. They turned into the manor’s drive, facing twenty uniformed soldiers camped on the front grass. The soldiers grabbed their weapons and assembled to bar Gags’s entrance into the hunting manor.
