Dane drew her against his chest and kissed the top of her head, whispering, “I love you.”

She caressed his cheek, loving the strength of his jaw. “I love you, too, Rodeo.”

He ran his hand up and down her arm, the calluses on his palm slightly rough and sending goose bumps racing toward her shoulder. Her pulse sped up at this reminder of his masculinity. She rose and swept his lips with a kiss. He wrapped his arms around her waist and said, “We have a problem here.” Then he hooked his thumbs in her panties and quickly slipped them off her.

“Problem solved.” She laughed, straddling him.

“Oh no, you don’t,” he told her, rolling her onto her back. “I believe I said tonight was all about you, missy.”

She chuckled. “Well, maybe I forgot.”

He laughed softly. “I doubt that, woman.” He traced her lips with the tip of his tongue, then delved deep inside her mouth, sending tingles racing through her. Her heart pounded an erratic rhythm as he trailed soft kisses to her breast, taking her nipple into his mouth and caressing it with his tongue. His hand slid from her arm to the dip in her waist, then to her hip, and then moved slowly down her thigh.

A shiver ran through her as he slid his warm palm to her soft curls. She whimpered her need when he slipped his finger inside her. Moving to her other breast, he suckled, caressing her with his tongue, the sensation so sensual she wanted to cry out. Mindful of the doors open to the night, she clamped her lips shut and breathed deep as he pumped his finger in and out, in and out. When he added a second one, she moaned her pleasure.

Suddenly he left her breast, moving between her thighs. She sucked in a breath, anticipation making her dizzy. She closed her eyes, and he spread her. Running her fingers through his hair, she shut out everything but him. When he stroked her with his tongue, a shiver of sheer pleasure swept through her. “Dane, honey, you feel so good.”

“I love you, sweetheart,” he whispered, and stroked her again. When he found her sensitive spot, she was lost. The pleasure took her, overwhelming her. She forgot Dane, forgot everything except the ecstasy of her body’s response to him.

Suddenly, she was there, a rush of pleasure so intense that she cried out. “Dane, love me!”

He lifted her and strode to the full-length mirror. “Honey, look at us,” he commanded.

She placed her hands on the wall on either side of it, forcing her eyes open. “Dane, now, please, honey,” she begged.

“Oh, God, you beautiful thing,” he said and guided himself inside her.

He began to move, lunging into her. She cried, “Yes!”, and watched him as he watched her. She’d never imagined that something like that would magnify her pleasure but, oh God, how it did. Watching his big, muscular body thrusting into hers was the most erotic thing she’d ever experienced. She came—and then she came again.

He thrust a final time and cried, “I love you, Alexis, honey!”

She smiled. God, her man was an incredible lover. Her life would be filled with happiness and love until the day she died.

In a little while, Dane straightened and carried her to the bed. He brushed her hair back from her face and sighed. “Sweetheart, you’ve made me the happiest man in the world. I can’t wait to get back to Texas to start our life together for real.”

She caressed his cheek, feeling wrapped in an invisible warmth, safer and happier than she’d ever been. “Honey, I love you. I can’t wait to wake up with you in our home, to cook breakfast for you, and someday, to give you a little cowboy of your own.”

He whispered, “Come here, you!” and smothered her with kisses.

She giggled. Life just didn’t get any better than this.

  Epilogue

Dane walked into the house, tired after a long spring day of planting on the tractor. He’d finished his last season of steer wrestling on top of his game, taking second at the national finals.

Alexis called, “Dinner’s in the oven, honey. And I’ve got everything set out for your shower.”

She’d begun doing that shortly after they’d returned from their honeymoon, and it was about the sweetest thing he could imagine. He’d told her that it wasn’t necessary, and she’d said, “Of course it isn’t, you dope. I want to do it.”

He undressed, his body sore from the constant jolting of heavy machinery, and strode into the bathroom. Sure enough, there were a clean pair of boxers and his shorts and T-shirt laid out on the hamper. He smiled. What a lucky man he was.

A moment later, as he let the hot water beat down on his sore back, his mind wandered over the past ten months. He and Alexis had settled into a routine. She helped him and his dad on their place, and then they helped her with all the fence-mending, castrating, and branding at her place.

She also had Tom, a part-time ranch hand who did all of her feeding.

The system had worked out well. Dane had also made improvements to her place, and she was now running more cattle. She’d be turning a real profit for the first time in a long while this coming year. All in all, things were looking up, and he couldn’t be happier.

Alexis poked her head in at the door. “Don’t take forever, Rodeo. I want to show you something.”

He chuckled, loving it that she still called him by his nickname after all this time. “I’m almost done, Cowgirl. Give me a break.”

She laughed and shut the door.

He finished quickly and stepped out. As he was drying off, he noticed two thin ribbons on the door handle, one pink and one blue. What the heck?

Dinner smelled amazing when he entered the kitchen, but Alexis was nowhere to be found. He called out, “Honey? Where are you?”

“I’m in the backyard. Come on out,” she yelled.

When he opened the back door, she was standing ten feet away grinning like hell and holding the smallest Shetland pony he’d ever seen by a lead rope. He walked over and rested his hands on his hips. “You decide on a new mount?”

That’s when he noticed the tiny little cowboy boots tied to the stirrups with blue and pink ribbons. Speechless, he stared at her for a moment. “Honey, there’re little boots...”

Then he looked again and saw two more boots hanging from the back of the tiny saddle. His jaw dropped. “Alexis?” He looked back at her, and she grinned, bringing out two little cowboy hats from behind her back.

“Honey, I’m pregnant. And that’s not all. We’re having twins!”

He let out a whoop that they could hear in the next county and took her into his arms. “Oh, sweetheart. I can’t believe it!”

She laughed and threw her arms around his neck. “I’m so happy, honey. I’ve waited so long to tell you.”

He put her down and she motioned to the little sorrel pony. “Isn’t he adorable?” I got him from the Olsens over north of Horsehead. You remember them? This pony raised all their kids. He’s a bit long in the tooth, but he’s got some good years left in him.”

Dane, still blown over by the twins announcement, patted the little guy’s neck. “He’s great.” Then he grabbed Alexis and hugged her again. “Honey, how far along are you? Do you know? I can’t believe we’re having a baby. I mean babies.”

“I’m three months along. I’ve known for a while, but I wanted to wait to tell you until I was sure that I wouldn’t miscarry. Sometimes twins are tricky to hold onto your first time around.”

“Well, I don’t want you working out on the ranch anymore. Not until long after you deliver,” he said firmly. He wasn’t taking no for an answer, either.

He was surprised when she said, “I think that’s a good idea, honey. I have plenty to do here around the house. Do you think we could make Tom full-time during my pregnancy and for a few months afterward?”

“Of course. I’ll give him a call in the morning.” He took the lead rope from her. “Damn, this little guy’s cute. What’s his name?”

  “Colby.”

“You go on inside. I’ll take him down to the barn and unsaddle him.”

As she walked away, he said, “Alexis?”

  She turned around. “Uh-huh?”

“I love you, honey. You’ve made me the happiest man in the world.”

She smiled and waved. “I love you too, Rodeo.”

And he was the luckiest man in the world, too.
