Heph: Modern Descendants 3, page 22
“I wouldn’t know what to do with a child,” Solis replied.
“You’d love it. Him or her, actually,” Veva said walking into my new living room. She’d been helping Phyre get used to all things female and mothering, and the smile on her face told my brother that he’d be a good father, or else. She crossed the room and wrapped an arm around his waist, and he drew her into him. Hades looked on longingly.
“I’m sorry Persephone couldn’t make it. If she’d known you were going to be here, she would have joined us,” Veva offered, softening the pained look in our cousin’s face.
“It’s fine,” he waved her off, taking another sip of his wine. “It’s better this way.” His head hung forward and his too-long hair covered the sadness of his face. He lied again. It wasn’t better. There wasn’t anything better than being with the one you loved, who also loved you back. On that thought, a tired Phyre sauntered into the room. The boys safely tucked into their new nursery next door to our master suite, she smiled slowly as her eyes met mine. Phyre walked straight for me, and I opened my arms to encircle her. She wasn’t shy in her displays of love for me, and her face nuzzled into my chest too briefly before she looked up at me.
“Asleep?” I questioned, knowing two hungry boys kept her awake most nights.
“Asleep,” she whispered, a sultry hint in her voice. We used any spare minute we had between crying children and incessant feedings to rebuild the time we lost while she was on bedrest, and our heads got the best of us, thinking we’d lost one another.
“That’s our cue,” Solis said, turning Veva for the front door with Hades trailing behind. My heart pinched at the thought he may never have what I did, but the soft click of wood, closing out the world, returned my thoughts to my own little space. Lips hit my neck, and I bent to lift Phyre, her body instantly curling into mine.
I carried her to our new room, complete with a larger bed, crisp white sheets and a replica of the quilt she once set on fire. I wanted to take my time with her, but knowing time wasn’t on our side with two infants, we rushed to remove clothes and climb between the downy coverings.
“I can’t wait,” she whispered, slipping her legs apart and wrapping one thigh over mine.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I said against her lips, still lazily moving beneath mine.
I slipped into her, surrounded by warmth unknown by any fire. Heat coursed through us both as our passion ignited and a rhythm set faster than rolling flames took the lead. From the moment this girl shot my tire, she pierced my soul, and I wanted nothing more than to be right where I was, inside of her, filling her, while she filled me with love.
thank you
My gratitude in this crazy writing life continues to grow. I’d like to thank Amy Queau for her amazing support as a cover designer and Kiezha Smith Ferrell for her editing expertise. Additional hugs to Karen Fischer for her eagle-eyes after the fact, and Ella, Tammi, Amy, and Sylvia for final reads. Much love to authors who support other authors as friends and colleagues: Michelle Mankin, Michelle Lynn, and Mia Kayla – my girls!
My family continuously needs my appreciation, too. They let me live in my fantasylands and write my little stories, ignoring dinner, laundry, and them. Thank you for letting me carve a little slice of me into my life.
