  Salat blinked. “What is that?”

“A note for my mother before your babies arrive. I hope I can meet with her soon.”

Salat sighed. “You already know when you are going to meet her.”

Baola grinned. “Yes, Sir... I do.” She giggled. “Remember that phrase.”

Salat blinked. “I should do my own proposing soon, then.”

He packed the letter in his pocket and left through the front door, lights of peacekeepers and team members all around the neighbourhood where dead assassins were being collected from all the pieces that they had been carved into.

Salat had his credentials, and Captain Denner had informed the local detachment as to what was going on, and Salat just left the area with the baby blankets, cookies, and letter.

Vallu looked up at Etgar. “He’s odd.”

“He’s undergone a change. Being mated suits him. Did you ever date him?”

“Yes. He needs human milk to get off, though, so I didn’t suit him.”

He blinked. “Oh. So his association with Khytten...”

  “Mutually desired.”

There was a knock on the door, and Brit had reverted to her normal shape. She was relieved to be out of the heels.

“Hey, Captain. Everybody is safe and sound and full of food.”

A sleepy Lii got up and ran to her dad. “Daddy!”

He caught her. “Are you okay? Did any of them make it in?”

Brit said, “Four. Etgar got one; I got the other three. We have the idents, and the place has been cleaned.”

Carl chuckled. “Brit is very tidy.”

He looked at Etgar. “How did they get in?”

Vallu yawned. “Mist walkers. They would have gotten in regardless. But, as Salat said, now, we have less of them.”

Denner sighed and looked at his sister. “It’s over. They have turned themselves in for hiring killers.”

Lii sighed. “Good. They don’t deserve to be loose.”

“You bet, baby. Now, did you want to get to bed?”

She nodded. “Yeah. Is Baola’s mom coming?”

There was the sound of the jeep and the distinct screech of the brakes. A few seconds later and Lyric burst into the room, holding her arms out. Baola ran to her, and they hugged. “Is everything good?”

“It is, Mom. I gave him my letter.”

  “Good girl. Is he nice?”

Baola blinked and thought about it. “Yes, but super scary.”

“So, just like we saw from the beginning.”

  “Yeah.” Another hug.

The family moment was super sweet, and Vallu teared up.

Ylara asked, “Hey, Lyric, can I get a ride home?”

  “Sure. Brit?”

“No, sis. I have my vehicle and have to get to check-in before there is a manhunt on me.”

  Lyric sighed. “Thanks for coming.”

Brit walked over and kissed Lyric and Baola on the cheek. “Be good, and if you can’t be good...”

“Don’t leave evidence.” Baola grinned. “Have a good rest, Aunty.”

“Get ready for your growth spurt. It’s starting to happen in the next two weeks.”

“I know. School has been warned.”

Brit smiled. “Good. Call me if you need anything or if you just want to talk.”

“Like always. Are you working on the quilt for my bed?”

“Absolutely, and the other one will be finished before your trip.”

Denner came over and wanted to hug Vallu, she could tell, but she was still held by Etgar. She wiggled to her feet, and she hugged her brother and niece.

“Can I go and sleep now?”

He touched her cheek. “You are good, Val. It’s over.”

She sighed. “Good. I have spent the day ripped with adrenaline or exhausted and fighting a nap.”

  Etgar chuckled. “The nap won.”

Denner looked at him up and down. “Fuck, some of you actives are big.”

She didn’t want the flick of the gaze that came next, from her to Etgar. “Don’t say it, Denner. Just take Liironia home so she can get some proper rest.”

“Where are you going to be?”

Etgar murmured, “Daycross. It is reinforced, and the staff are all family staff. It is the safest place for her right now.”

She muttered, “Except for his mother. She and I are going to have words.”

“You can say or do what you want to her. She has broken the responsibilities of a hostess.” Etgar nodded.

“Really?” Vallu looked up at him and grinned.

  “Really.”

Denner looked at him and said, “You do realize that she’s had peacekeeper training until her body was determined to be overpowered when she was irritated.”

Etgar chuckled. “I learn something new about her every moment.”

“She just can’t shoot for shit. She’s a brawler. So, take that under advisement if you set her loose on your mother.”

She sighed and went to grab a bag of sewing projects, needles, and threads with some sharp scissors. Etgar looked at her. “What are you doing?”

“Getting things to keep my hands busy so I don’t strangle your mother.”

“You could keep your hands busy with me.”

She paused. “And strangle your mother at the same time? It’s an interesting mental image.”

He snorted. “Do you have what you need?”

“I have what I want.” She walked over and pressed her face to his chest. “Now, I have what I need.”

His hug was nearly crushing, but they soon left the previous safety of her house, locked up, and Rejik carried her bag while Olim got back behind the wheel.

They were on their way back to the ferry and away from her house. This time, she was looking forward to it. The ring on her finger changed things. She was no longer a guest; she was a wanted addition to the family. The lady would have to deal with what her son had brought home because she wasn’t leaving.

  Chapter Twelve

Etgar was nuzzling her neck and cheek when they arrived back at his home. It was a pretty quick commute if you had your own ferry.

When the guys stopped and opened the car door for them, Etgar got out carefully and set her on her feet. He kissed her softly and smiled. “Ready to go in?”

  “Yup.”

  He murmured, “Me, too.”

She blinked, turned, and stroked his cheek. “Perv.”

He laughed, and they headed in to see a robed Lady Daycross confronting them in the front room. “Why are you coming in so late? I have been getting calls from Helen, and she was panicked. She needed to talk to you, Etgar.”

Vallu smiled. “You won’t be getting many calls from her. She and her husband have confessed to putting every murderer in the city on my trail.”

“What?” She was astonished. “How is the baby?”

“Surprisingly fine. Apparently, I associate with a better class of killer than those who put the hit on me.” She yawned. “Now, if you will excuse me, I want to get to bed.”

Lady Daycross smiled. “Perhaps a brandy to chat about this evening’s events? I confess to curiosity.”

“Are you offering me brandy, Lady Daycross?” Vallu pinched the bridge of her nose.

“A little won’t hurt the baby.” Lady Daycross waved off the concern.

Vallu stepped forward, grabbed her soon-to-be mother-in-law by the neck, and held her in the air. “Now, just so we are clear. Alcohol will make me vomit. Excessive baked goods will make me vomit. Sushi I am just supposed to avoid. So, if we are having dinner at any time and there is an ingredient in the food that I find objectionable. I will vomit on you. Directly and until you stop trying to assert yourself this way. I am not human, I don’t play at being human, and I am marrying your son. So, if you thought to put the nursery near your room, we are going to have words. Short words. Four letters.”

Vallu lowered her to her feet. The lady staggered back as Vallu let her go. “Etgar, did you see what she did to me?”

“I did. She restrained herself rather well. Hurting her will injure your grandchild, so if you don’t want to find yourself in the dower house, you will hide the traces of the build going on in the room next to yours. Even if a disaster happens and Vallu doesn’t make it through delivery, the child is mine, and it will sleep in the room next to me, not you.”

Vallu felt a surge of heat through her body, and she looked at him. His defending his claim on their baby was super sexy.

She sighed. “Well, I am going to head to bed, so I will see you tomorrow.”

She took a few steps, and the cook slid into the room. He nodded. “Miss Vallu, what would you like for breakfast tomorrow?”

She bit her lip. “Scrambled eggs, bacon sausage, fruit salad, cucumber salad, and some buns or toast. Breakfast tea for me, coffee or what they like for everyone else.”

He nodded and grinned. “What time do you plan to rise?”

She looked over to Etgar. “What time are you getting up?”

He chuckled. “Between five and seven. We will have breakfast at eight-thirty.”

  “Right. Is that good?”

The chef nodded. “So, a variety for everyone else, high protein and vegetable for you. Got it. Easy. Welcome to the house, Miss Vallu.”

“Thank you. Basically, food requirements are standard for meals I am at. No booze in anything and low starch.”

“Simple.” He smiled. “If I had known, I would have been able to accommodate you earlier.”

“It’s fine. New arrival, fresh start.” She felt a slow throb through her body. “And I am done for the evening. Four dead people in my house and another ten in the neighbourhood can really take it out of you.”

Lady Daycross frowned. “Wait, you mean Helen sent the hitmen?”

Etgar nodded. “She holds a grudge because her daughter died of cancer, and Vallu didn’t kill herself keeping her alive.”

Lady Daycross looked at Vallu’s belly. “She tried to kill my grandchild?”

Vallu nodded. “They were the ones who shot at me on the street when I was talking to Etgar. Wow. Yesterday.”

“She shot my son!” The lady’s eyes went red, and there was a humming.

  Etgar grabbed Vallu. “Get down.”

The staff all hit the floor as a narrow beam of energy swung out while the lady staggered outdoors and shrieked to the sky.

Vallu looked at Etgar on the floor. “Whoa.”

“Yeah. I am not worried about you two fighting. We have a good contractor and paint crew.”

Lady Daycross was still red-faced and breathing heavily when Vallu had an idea. She got up and walked over, taking a hand and put it against her belly. “It started moving today.”

The eyes cleared, and the other hand pressed to feel the flutter. “Oh, hello, baby. I am your grandma. Nana. Granny.”

  Vallu offered, “Deedee?”

“Oh, I like that. Deedee.” She looked up at Vallu. “Thank you. You have a knack for calming members of my family.”

“And now, I am heading to bed. My belly will be available for petting when I indicate that there is movement.” She smiled. “Oh, my niece will be a frequent visitor. Her father is a peacekeeper, but Liironia is horse crazy.”

“Etgar used to ride a lot.” She was wistful.

“He’s about to have a relapse.”

  Lady Daycross smiled. “Really?”

“Really. I can’t ride with her. Someone has to.”

If the lady had a tail, it would be wagging.

Exhausted by the day, Vallu headed up the stairs while Etgar gave his mother a briefing. The Leothorns were about to have a very bad time.

The markings on the wall next to the lady’s home made her smile. Vallu looked in the guestroom next to Etgar’s suite, and she smiled. For now, it would be an adjoining door, then a soundproofed wall when the child was older. Perhaps one of the other rooms would be made up to their specs a little bit down the hall. Vallu didn’t like the idea of traumatizing her children with screams, even if they were fun ones.

She paused. She had just thought of more than one. How strange. But, with her preferred sperm donor in her bed, it wasn’t a logistical nightmare.

Vallu entered the master bedroom, and there was a neatly wrapped parcel on the bed. She took a look and blinked. He hadn’t been kidding. The sheets from the previous night and day were wrapped up to calm him down. They were... aromatic. Her enhanced senses caused a silent riot, and she stepped away to lick her lips and look around.

She checked the wardrobe and smiled at the silvery fabric of a negligee. She changed quickly, got out of the heels that brought her up to Etgar’s shoulder height, and sighed as she flicked her panties off before they got damper than normal around him.

She slipped on the silvery robe, moved the folded sheets to the bedside table, and curled up on the bed, on top of the covers. She dozed, and when a warm hand cupped her thigh, she smiled and opened her eyes.

He had removed his own clothes, and he said, “I believe you said it was a pity that I had proposed at the end of our time together.”

He looked at her finger and said, “Where’s your ring?”

She bit her lip. “I hid it.”

He looked around with a frown. “Where, I can’t pick it out. Wait... I can just catch a hint of it.” He rolled her to her back.

She smiled as he kissed her, and she said, “I am not used to games, so if I have gone too far, I will just retrieve it, and we can pretend it never happened.”

“Oh, I like the challenge of finding it. I suspect that I know where it would be, but I am going to take my own sweet time finding it.” He grinned. “My fiancée.”

She felt her cheeks heat, but her body throbbed lightly. He was having fun but not mindless. Not yet.

He kissed her and moved over her, stroking one hand down her body in a slow frisk. He leaned to the other side and did the same slow stroke. “Hmm. Not there. In fact. Nothing is. Wait a minute.” He grinned and moved to her feet, sliding her gown up and up until the hem was just below her crotch.

She felt the pulse in her body speed up, and he nuzzled her inner thighs. He had her legs pinned together, so as he ran his face across her thighs, she tried to widen them, but there was nowhere to go.

“It smells like it could be here, but I think if I get you a little slicker, it would just come out on its own.”

She shivered as he went up on his heels and eased the robe and the straps of her gown off her shoulders. Her breasts were exposed, and he started there with his fingers slowly sliding between her thighs and his lips working her nipples, plucking, his tongue lapping and sucking softly before he moved to the next. He went back and forth for some time before he sighed, “No. Nothing. I believe that you mentioned sniffing me.”

Vallu blushed. “Would denials work here?”

“No, I have wanted to test this; let’s find out.”

He kissed her hard, twisting his tongue with hers. She whimpered and held his head as she started rocking her hips against his hand.

“Still not quite. Breathe me in.”

She grimaced and pressed her face against his skin, inhaling deeply. Like she always did, she got embarrassingly slick. She felt her body surge, felt his fingers flex, and he held up the ring he had just put on her finger that afternoon. “Found it.”

He popped it in his mouth and swirled it around before removing it and sliding it on her finger again. “Mine.”

She sighed. “I am regretting hiding that.”

She nuzzled him and inhaled deeply. She started to slowly undulate against him, and she looked up at him through her lashes. “And now I am so empty.”

His eyes flared, and he growled. “I can help with that.”

She pressed her breasts against his chest then started to stroke her way down his chest to his lower belly. “Can you? Good. I am looking for something to help. Something long and thick that will keep me occupied. Make me feel filled, mate.”

“You don’t know what you are doing.”

  She smiled slowly. “I do.”

“Remember that phrase; you are going to need it.” His voice was growly and thick.

She swallowed and looked at the part of her mate that was normally dormant rise and fill out before he glared at her.

He flipped her to her belly, and her robe tore down the back. The gown went next.

  She winced.

“Sorry. I will get you another.” He was sniffing around the mark he had left, and he pressed it with his fingers, causing her hips to flex and her backside to raise.

She pulled her limbs up and pushed her head down until she was in a low crouch with her legs spread wide.

“Oh, that is very pretty; what a lucky wolf I am.”

She whimpered as he dragged his tongue across her neck and shoulders then back to the mark.

Her backside went higher, and she whimpered again. Then, she whispered, “If you aren’t going to fuck me, I am going to need a range of toys to do the job.”

He moved against her and slid in nearly to the knot before he paused. “This isn’t right.”

She mewled in frustration as he pulled out, and then, she let out a “Yipe!” as he turned her around and pulled her onto his cock, sinking deep. “I want to see you.”

She moaned, and her head fell back. He licked her neck and moved his hands on her as he moved her with his hands, lifting and dropping her until her soul was jarred by the tension that filled her. She clung to his shoulder, and her teeth gnashed as she got closer to either screaming or biting out his jugular.

He rumbled a growl and moved his head to hers, rubbing his temple against hers and licking her ear, her cheek, and finally, they locked together in a kiss. She used his taste, the feel of him, his motion inside her, and the growing heat between them. Her thighs flexed as they rocked together, and he stopped moving her and cupped her hips while his fingers gripped her ass. She moved faster and faster, driving down on him a little further each time. He growled, moved his head, and bit her shoulder as he thrust upward and locked them together. She felt stretched, but part of her was making happy sounds.
