‘You went into the hole!’ said Mike. ‘And took Penny with you!’

‘I did?’ said Paul, frowning. ‘Why would I do something so stupid?’ He looked at Penny. ‘I’m really sorry … but I don’t remember any of that.’

‘There’s a lot of not remembering going around,’ said Penny. She shot me a hard look, making it clear she would expect an explanation later, and then shrugged. ‘Maybe some things are just better forgotten.’

‘I always miss out on the excitement,’ said Paul. He looked at Mike. ‘What happened while I was gone?’

  ‘Well …’ said Mike.

I led Penny away, leaving the two of them to talk. I was sure they had a lot to say to each other. I felt a little easier in myself. By returning the original Paul, his replacement had demonstrated a surprising amount of mercy. And that had to mean something. Maybe he was a better man than I’d thought.

  And maybe I was too.
