The Call (Another Love Book 2), page 26
When all was said and done, they were made for each other.
“You know, I think I need to check that contract your mummy signed three years ago, buddy.” Luciana’s thumb gently caressed her son’s cheek. He squirmed in her arms, pulling his little fists up against his chest. “She only wanted dinner and conversation. She somehow ended up with a wife and kid.”
Luciana lifted her son, placing him against her chest as she rocked back in the chair she’d commandeered from their nurse a couple of hours ago.
Luciana giggled to herself. “Dinner and conversation. She saw me coming, son. There was no way it was going to end that way. I used my flirty eyes with her. I’ll teach you. It’ll get you all the ladies. Or the guys. Whichever you prefer.”
Luciana pressed a kiss to her son’s head, his mop of dark brown hair potentially the reason for Sam’s horrific heartburn throughout her pregnancy. At least, that’s what Sam had declared once she’d taken a moment to relax after her labour. The internet had suggested it months ago, but Luciana explained that he would probably enter the world completely bald. No such luck. At least he would be prepared for the winter with so much hair.
“Do you think she’ll want to go on a date with me when she’s feeling better?” Luciana spoke to their son as though he was about to give her all of the answers to life’s questions. “I mean, it’ll only be dinner and conversation, but do you think she’ll go for it?”
He squirmed again, his tiny eyes peeking open as a cry rumbled in his chest.
“No? Okay.” Luciana stood up, rocking her son. “She’s already got you around her little finger. Christ. Okay, so how about I woo her? She deserves to be wooed all day, every day. You think she’ll go for that?”
“You’re wooing me right now, beautiful.”
Luciana’s head shot up, finding Sam watching her. She had a beaming smile on her face, one that Luciana wanted to capture and keep forever. “Did I wake you?”
“Nope.” Sam pushed herself up in the bed, sitting better as she adjusted her pillows. She groaned, wrinkling her nose as a throb set in between her legs. “Word of warning: never push out a nine-pound thirteen-ounce kid. It doesn’t end well.”
“You sore, babe?” Luciana closed the distance between them, the baby in her arms beginning to stir now that it was time to be fed.
“A little. I’m sure everything will be okay in a couple of days.”
“What you did earlier was very impressive. I’m so proud of you.”
“Couldn’t have done it without you by my side.” Sam scooted over in the bed, patting the space she’d created for Luciana. The vision she woke to had been a sight to behold, but now she wanted her wife and child beside her. “You two look so cute together.”
“We were just hanging out until your boobs became available.” Luciana shrugged, placing their son against Sam’s chest. “I’m not impressed that I have to share them.”
“Don’t be so greedy.”
“Babe?”
Sam noted how Luciana was chewing her bottom lip. “Yes?”
“They’re not going to stay massive, are they?”
In times of pain and discomfort, Luciana would always put a smile on Sam’s face. Regardless of the situation, she would always use humour as her way of coping. “You really are going to miss them, aren’t you?”
“We got attached,” Luciana said, feigning her disappointment as she offered Sam her puppy dog eyes. “We got along really well.”
“You did. I can certainly vouch for that.” Sam smirked, popping the buttons on her shirt to allow her son to feed. “I’m sure there are plenty of other things for you to play with.”
Luciana groaned. Sam knew exactly what she was doing.
“I’ve been spoilt for choice since the moment I met you. I don’t think I'm about to have to worry now…”
“I can’t wait to get this one home with us.” Sam sighed, her eyes studying the tiny face nuzzled up against her boob, his little fingers clawing at her skin. He loved his food; Sam was beginning to realise that.
“I was thinking while you were sleeping. Did you have any names in mind?”
“One or two but nothing that really grabs my attention.”
Luciana got comfortable beside Sam, her arm slipping around Sam’s back, her nails grazing Sam’s scalp. “What do you think about…Luca?”
“Luca.” Sam tested it on her palette. It sounded good. It sounded…perfect. “I…love it.”
Luciana’s lips curled upward. “Yeah? Really?”
“Really.”
“You know, uh…I’ve been thinking.” This news was going to be huge, Luciana felt it deep in her belly. It would be surprising, but positive. Life couldn’t be much better. “I’m leaving the brigade.”
Sam’s head shot up. “What?”
“It’s time. And if that job is still available with you, I’d love to be considered.”
“You’re actually leaving? But, why?”
“I have a whole new load of priorities, Sam. You and Luca are my world. I don’t want to ever risk my life again if it means I may never come home to you both. And maybe that’s selfish and cowardly, but I don’t care. If wanting to be with you and him until I’m old means I am…then I’m willing to be selfish. My family is what matters to me. Always.”
“Wow.”
“You’re not mad?” Luciana asked.
Sam stared. Unable to take her eyes off her wife, her entire universe. This day had been something else, truly, but Luciana had just settled Sam’s heart once and for all.
“Babe?”
Sam turned her head, capturing Luciana’s lips desperately. “God, I could spend forever kissing you.”
“So, the job?”
“I’ll support you in whatever you decide. You’ve changed my entire life, Luciana.”
Luciana frowned, pulling back. “Oh, because I thought I was only dinner and conversation.”
Sam laughed deep from within her belly, Luca’s body jiggling about as she did. “Dinner and conversation? With you? Not in a million years…”
