Tomorrow Might Be Different

Tomorrow Might Be Different

Mack Reynolds

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Mack Reynolds wrote a number of socio-political science fiction works in the 1960s and 1970s, most of which are sadly forgotten today. Tomorrow Might be Different takes on a fascinating premise -- what if the Soviet Union's planned economy actually worked? What if they were able to mass-produce consumer goods to meet internal needs, and to export them cheaply -- in essence, what the Chinese are doing now. The answer -- a massive depression in the US, since the Russians have put most American domestic industries out of business. The solution arrived at by protagonist Mike Edwards is an unusual one. Edwards, with the help of some super-secret spook types, proposes to combat Marxism with that Old Time Religion. The CIA and NATO finance a gospel Manhattan project, sending missionaries into the Soviet Union, spreading a "modern" gospel based on one central idea -- everything in moderation. The movement is a great success. And Reynold's ending is a sucker punch from nowhere that is brilliant. Reynolds writes in a straightforward style, draws his characters well, throws in a good boy-meets-girl subplot with unashamed sex scenes, and in 200 pages gives you a good old-fashioned read. He avoids the literary pretentiousness that infects so much science fiction today, but does lay out some interesting observations on Capitalism, Marxism, and Christianity. This is highly recommended.
