His local village is getting ready to hold their annual star festival, but Giovanni feels as if he's been left out. But then the most amazing thing happens, and Giovanni finds himself riding on a train heading through the Milky Way.A Story With A MessageAt one time or another in our lives we must deal with the grief of losing a friend or loved one. Quite often it is difficult to move on after such an event. But what if we were to remember an amazing train ride across the Milky Way that we shared with that friend, each time we thought about them? What if we were able to turn our grief into a resolve to make a difference in the world and to live the life that our friend missed out on as well as our own? What if we made an effort to keep their memory alive by embracing life, wouldn't that make a difference? Wouldn't that help us move on? This is the story of Night on the Milky Way Railway. About this TranslationThis translation includes a simple glossary (just click on the featured word to jump to the explanation) to help you navigate your way through the galaxy, which can also be accessed at the back of the book after you have finished reading the story. I have also added the translation of the 'Cello Voice' sections that Kenji cut from the final version. The Cello Voice sections provide an interesting insight into the author's motivation for writing the story. A much more detailed glossary can be found on the Little J Books website. All effort was made to create a translation faithful to the author's vision. No material has been used in this translation that wasn't written by the author, and the names of the characters have not been changed.About the Author Born in 1896, Kenji was brought up as the eldest child in a wealthy household in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. From a very young age he had an insatiable appetite for knowledge, with interests spanning geology, astronomy, through all types of flora and fauna, cinema, music, painting and literature. A devout Buddhist, Kenji turned his back on the family pawn broking and second-hand kimono business, becoming a teacher at the local agricultural high school, and writing poems and fairytales to help spread a Buddhist message of universal peace.Night on the Milky Way Railway is his longest story, and is considered by many to be his best.

The Story Of The Great Steam Calliope

The Story Of The Great Steam Calliope

Lindsay Johannsen

Lindsay Johannsen

An inverse correlation seems to exist between an invention's size and its numerical success. Small inventions can infest the world (mobile phones, Velcro, spray cans); larger ones may seem to (shopping trolleys, cars, shipping containers), but really huge ones (suspension bridges, radio telescopes, tunnel boring machines etc) do not. Norman Watt's invention was at the latter category's extreme endOne dark and quiet night in Valdare, the village far below Valdarius’ castle, a young woman was returning home from her daily duties at the magistrate’s manor house. She was the only person in the streets on this night, but she thought nothing of it, for it was a routine she had done many times before. Little did she know that tonight would be very different from any she had ever experienced in her young life As she was walking along, whistling her favorite tune to help drown out the silence, she felt a cold chill run through her body that made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. She bundled up and started walking faster. As she rounded the corner into the alley to her house, she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye. She stopped to take a look around, but saw nothing. Thinking that it must have been an ally cat or a street rat, she continued walking towards her house.

Of Men Made Gods

Of Men Made Gods

Osman Welela

Science Fiction / Fantasy / Contemporary

This is probably NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!It's filled with ridiculous things like magicians, gods, dragons, magical artifacts, and a duel. But if you do read it, don't forget to leave a comment for the Stars' sake!"I lied about not finding a way to channel magic from other beings," said Avon, referring to the failure he had admitted to last time he spoke at Hall. "There was a land I visited where magicians grew their power by feeding off their own men. Have you any idea what kind of danger you've brought to our people?""We'll be different," said Elizo, the earlier surprise fading from his face as his voice eased back to an uncaring tone. "We are Danu."Avon made a sound halfway between mocking and despair as he heard his people's name being uttered with such blind fate. "You mean we'll be the first to fall?" he asked, not able to keep the rising anger out of his voice. "The first people to usher darkness into the world?"Faced with an enemy with superior numbers, the Danu had chosen to flee after decades of endless battles. Years later, as they are getting accustomed to their new home, they find that their enemy is hunting for them again. Chaos follows, as these ancient people are filled with bone trembling fear at the thought of annihilation. In this time of uncertainty, a man, Lucifio Lamourn, turns to the one thing his people have more than any other; magic. He proposes a plan so drastic that it'll literally change the face of the land itself.More than a hundred years later, news of that same enemy arrives to the now prosperous home of the magicians who call themselves Druids. And just as his ancestor had done in his own time, Avon Lamourn puts forward a radical plan of his own. Now he only has to convince the power hungry, decadent, and egotistic rulers of his people that his way would avert the coming war with the least amount of risk.

The holy sites on earth have been destroyed -- Jerasulem first, then the Vatican, then Mecca -- and what resistance remains is ruthlessly crushed. Amaranth is a fighter in the resistance cell based in London. Dham is a Ringer, one of the few people left able to ring the remaining sets of blessed hand bells that have power over demons.
