A Scandalous Connection, page 23
The door opened once again.
“Am I?” Amy stood shyly in the doorway between the two rooms. Demian looked from her to Raquel to Thomas.
“You knew all along!” His tone was accusatory, but he could not take his extraordinary gaze off Miss Mayhew’s eyes. They were shining silver, matching her ribbons and her sparkling gown.
“Knew what?” came Thomas’s innocent remark.
“That I am in love with that witch over there. How could you rush off like that, leaving me at the mercy of those vixens? You cannot be fond of me at all.”
“Oh, but I am, Your Grace. I am.”
Amy sailed forward, all doubts banished in that single revealing moment. She was not given a chance to escape again, for the duke forgot his unpropitious surroundings, and that two other human beings scrutinized his lordly technique. Thomas, however, was always one for seizing opportunities.
“Lesson, two, Raquel . . . see how he masterfully sweeps her off her feet and kisses her till her eyes close and she appears quite faint? Excellent technique, but the appropriate response would be, I think, this.” At which, Mr. Endicott’s demonstration became more practical in nature, much to the Lady Raquel’s complete satisfaction.
Outside, three carriages were rumbling home. For once, both Mrs. Corey and Mrs. Murgatroyd were equally crushed. The butler, it seemed, had provided them with the thorough scolding that they deserved.
Only, he was not the butler, he was the duke, and horrible Miss Mayhew was going to be a duchess. Amelia Corey wailed into her handkerchief and for once was not admonished. Miss Oliver and Miss Fletcherson sulked, but Daphne Murgatroyd was already talking, in high-pitched accents, of her bosom friend Amy. It was “Amy this” and “Amy that” for as long as seven tired travelers could stand it. She was silenced, at last, by the vicious flight of a carriage squab. It caught at her bonnet and played havoc with her ribbons. Miss Mayhew, had she been present, would certainly have approved.
