“What do you want, huh?” I demanded when neither said anything. “I have no power. I have nothing you want. You might as well kill me and get it over with.”

A voice answered me, but it wasn’t Guinevere. “Such bravado for one who has finally found his soul mate.”

I growled, baring my fangs. “Why don’t you show your face?”

Rose and Guinevere parted to let another person step forward. The hood was tossed back, and Cassandra’s wicked smirk greeted me, her long, white hair framing her face. Those violet eyes shimmered when she came closer, staying out of reach of my fangs. Pity. She sighed as though I’d disappointed her.

“Sadly, you’re not the vampire they were meant to capture. However, you have some use.”

I showed no reaction to her words but tucked them away. The theory we had of Aleister’s connection to Cassandra might be correct after all. “You won’t use me to get to Emery. I won’t let you.”

“I’m afraid you don’t have a choice in the matter, seeing as you’re currently chained to a wall. And before you go all heroic saying you’ll find a way to kill yourself and what have you,” she added with a careless wave of her hand while she walked away, “save it. We both know you’ll do anything to see your precious Emery again.”

“If you harm her, I’ll rip out your throat and drain you dry.”

Her eyes flared when she whirled back around to face me. “Oh, sweetheart, you really think you can scare me? You’re not the first vampire to try and kill me. I fear nothing, certainly not a child such as yourself.”

I yanked on the chains until my wrists bled, but they continued to hold.

“As much as I’d love to stay and chat, I have plans to put into motion. I’m afraid your little fiasco at the academy has moved up my timetable. I’ll be back soon. The others will keep you company.”

Cassandra exited the cavern the same way she entered. I opened my mouth to curse her when my jaw snapped shut against my will. Hands clenching in anger, I shifted my gaze to Guinevere, holding her hand toward me and smirking.

“Time for a little payback,” she mused. “Let’s see how much pain it takes to make you go mad.”

I grabbed hold of the chain and squared my shoulders, waiting for her attack.

Emery. If I could think of her, getting back to her, I’d survive whatever they did to me. I had no choice.

Guinevere drew a dagger from her hip and approached, cackling while she aimed the point at my neck.

  “Where, oh, where to begin?”

I hope you enjoyed Death's Rival!
