Can’t do that Nova. You must use your powers, or your brother and Noni will die.
Then tell them that I am sorry for disappointing them. Especially Alex. Especially when he gave up a lot just to take care of me, she said.
What the hell?! So, you are just going to give up on them, I asked shocked and angry. What the hell was her problem?
Yes, Maxon. I so tired.
I growled just as Alex burst through the door. He was all red with anger and blood. His skin was so dark that you couldn’t see the difference between the bloodstains and his reddened skin. He looked at me still struggling on the floor and his face quickly fell into a grimace. I must have looked worse than I really felt.
“Ah, Alex I heard that you didn’t get to your mate in time,” Marc said. “That must have really hurt feeling what they were doing to her. Knowing that she was calling out the name of a mate who never came.”
Alex growled, and I knew what was happening. Marc was baiting him like he had been trying to do me, but with Alex, it was working ten times better because he did feel guilty about not getting to her in time. Also, the fact that Noni wouldn’t let him touch her might have had something to do with it too.
Don’t fall for it Alex. He’s baiting you, I warned.
I know what he is doing, and it’s working very well, he said struggling to contain his wolf. He was seconds away from shifting.
Think what Noni would go through if you died now especially, I shouted in my mind quickly.
He visibly tensed. If Noni was in bad shape now, add the loss of her mate and see how long she survived. I sadly gave her a few days.
Breathe Alex, I told him.
I needed him level headed and alive for this. I looked over at Nova who had weakly turned her head to the door that had just opened. I could literally feel her fear as she looked at the doorway and then to Alex and me. I curiously turned to the door and my face fell and looked over to Alex.
Oh, we are going to get our asses handed to us all right, he said.
We’ll be fine, bro. Nova will come through. She loves us way too much to just watch us die, especially if she can help it.
I know, he said cutting me off. He was preparing himself for the inevitable ass-kicking we were about to receive.
The men that had come through the door were not big by any means; hell, Nova was bigger than some of the guys. What really had us feeling some sort of emotion, I will never admit fear, was different silver objects each carried in their hands. They were mostly long silver pipes sharpened on one end. One missed calculated hit, and we were dead. And while I knew that was Marc’s plan, I knew he wasn’t just going to go straight for the kill. He’d wait a while and make Nova suffer.
Babe, you must start trying, like now, I said.
I can’t. They will just have to die. I’m sorry. I’m too weak right now. I can’t even feel my fingers, she said.
I know babe, but you just can’t let them die.
I want to die, she said.
I growled at the statement. What about me Nova? Do I not matter to you? Do you no care how that would affect me, change my life? If Alex and Noni die, then I die too, I said harshly. My eyes never left her body. I could see her flinching from each word I said.
I will die, Nova!
No.
Marc and my father are going to kill me, but only after they rape Noni, again, in front of Alex-, she whimpers at the word rape. She must not have been conscious during Noni’s screams.
Stop.
They are going to kill Alex in front of Noni —
Maxon stop, she said. Her voice had gotten a little stronger.
I looked over to see the men getting closer to Alex and when I tried to get up and over to him, my father stepped on my back, making sure I couldn’t move but I could see. As soon as the first pipe touch, Alex, he fell to his knees and doubled over, crying out. I look over to Nova and she was hanging there shaking.
Then they’ll just kill Noni in front of you. They know how much that will crush you. Watching the girl who has been there for you die and you not do anything about it…
I just kept piling stuff you know that I could get her to snap. I thought back to the day she had found out I wanted to keep her a secret. She used her powers then, and she was really pissed…
Maxon stop it, she said stronger but struggling. I could tell that her powers were working. Either they weren’t paying attention or didn’t care but Nova was shaking hard.
I’m going to be the only one left Nova. They will torture me in front of you. They will stab, poke and cut me with all the silver they can find. They’ll make me confess my love for you and then stab me in the heart with one of those pipes.
Nova’s head whipped to mines quickly making eye contact. Her eyes were an electric blue, her wolf. Only this time her eyes were a little different, they had a vibrant gold infused in them somehow. Her eyes were narrowed, and her face was scrunched up in anger.
I said stop Maxon, she warned.
I am totally going to pain for this later, I thought.
When you left, I had sex with some of the femmes at the packhouse, I lied.
She growled. You’re lying!
No. It was good. I love it. I was so happy it wasn’t you, I said. I was really piling it on thick hoping she would believe me. By the looks of it, she was buying it.
You bastard.
Just let them kill me now and I wouldn’t have to see your fat ass again, I said. My wolf and I flinched knowing that should be the thing that set her off.
It was, because seconds later she yanked herself free from the wall and ripped off the silver around her wrists and ankles. She licked each wound, and they healed almost instantly. Then she looks back over at me and growls.
“What the hell,” my dad shouted before he is pushed into a wall. Hearing something crack everyone stopped and looked, my dad.
Hopefully, it was his neck, I thought.
“Nova calm down. I was just saying those things to make you mad. I needed you to use your powers,” I said to her aloud.
She growled at me when I tried to get up. it frightened not only me but my wolf as well and we thought it best that we stayed down.
“Well, it worked. And you don’t have to worry about them killing you,” she said picking me up and throwing me at a wall, only to beat me to the wall and slam me into it harder than I was already going to. By this time, I’m sure we had everyone’s attention. “Because I’m going to kill you, Maxon.”
“You’ve finally tapped into all your powers, eh Nova,” Marc said coming out of nowhere.
“I’ll kill you after I kill him,” she growled out.
Memories of Noni’s screams flooded her mind. I could see she remembered the men’s faces, and she knew that Marc had given them the OK to hurt Noni.
Maybe pissing her off wasn’t such a good idea, I thought to myself scared.
Hopefully fighting Marc and the rest of these clowns would cool her off… hopefully.
chapter 31
Nova
I hate him. I hate him. I hate him! I thought to myself.
I never wanted to end someone’s life so much in my life. OK, well that was a lie because I really wanted to end Natalie’s life, but Marc; he had taken the cake so far. I wanted him so dead that he would have no chance to see Julia in the next life. I wanted his essence ended.
No more reincarnation for him, I thought happily.
“Marc, how could you? Noni and I were your friends! We loved you like a brother,” I shouted at him.
I could feel my wolf pushing at the cage of my mind. I had to stay calm. Marc was an Alpha, and I knew he could beat me in a fight, but that was just barely, but still, my wolf didn’t want to take that chance.
It had taken seconds for me to reign myself in. I was shocked that we were able to break free from the chains and heal the way we did. I was mad that my wolf knew about these gifts and kept them a secret. A lot of what has happened these last few months would never have happened if I knew about the existence of these gifts.
It’s not my fault you were ready to use them, she replied to my thoughts.
And how do you know? Did you ask? No, I told her angrily. Maxon and I could be well on our way to having pups by now if she had just told me.
You’re the one with the mental block, not me. There is a reason your gifts only work when you’re extremely upset. It’s your mind so fix the problem there, she barked at me.
Before I could even give a reply, she growled at Marc who had been walking closer to us, too close in her opinion.
Pay attention, she growled to me.
“Spare me the pity party Nova. You let Julia die! You have all these special powers and you decided not to use them for Julia, but you’d waste it on these lowlifes. I don’t get that. Did you not love Julia as much as you claimed to? Was she not a sister to you just like Noni,” he asked me. His voice rose with every new question. And even though I felt like I could take on twenty wolves by myself, I flinched from the harshness of his words.
“I couldn’t use them. I didn’t know how,” I said.
“But you know how to now,” he asked snarkily. “When everyone you know, and love is in danger…” He scoffed in disgust. “When your mate wanted to keep you and secret from his pack and then cheated on you.”
Maxon looked down still ashamed of what he did, and even though the latter wasn’t his fault, I knew he still felt bad for not somehow knowing it wasn’t me. My wolf agreed with him. He should’ve somehow known it wasn’t us, but I wasn’t as harsh. I knew we weren’t like our wolves. I knew that we couldn’t just tell like wolves could, but I know she didn’t make his skin tingle. She couldn’t have.
“Or the brother who said he wanted your cheating mate to severe the bond and kill you in the process. Are these the people you love Nova,” he asked sounding shocked.
Alex growled at Marc. His face was badly bruised and cut up. I held in the whimper from the sight of my brother. I didn’t even want to risk looking at the sight of Maxon. I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold back my wolf if he was too badly hurt.
“Marc you know if I knew how to control my gifts, I would’ve saved her,” I explained to him.
By this point, my anger had died down completely and was being replaced by guilt. Although I knew there was nothing, I could’ve done to save the headstrong Julia, there still could’ve been something that I could’ve attempted to do.
“I loved you and Julia. You both were my family. We tried to save her. We told her, hell, even you told her not to go.” I told him, subliminally trying to plead with him. He needed to understand that Noni, and I tried.
“She’s dead Nova! And you have everyone you love. How is that fair,” he asked me. His voice ran out through the room as he shouted the question at me.
“It’s not, but there’s nothing you can do about it,” I choked. Tears were welling up in my eyes as my throat burned.
I was not going to cry. Not for him. He just ordered Noni raped and Alex and Maxon beat. He didn’t deserve my sympathy, I chanted in my head.
Don’t let him get to you babe, Maxon said in my head. He must have felt the guilt in me.
Stay out of my head Maxon, I growled at him.
I was still mad at him. While in a fit of rage my wolf might not have liked the fact that he did what he did and said those things, I understood it; but the fat ass crack was way too far. I was still tender about my weight.
Babe, I swear I didn’t mean it. I was just trying to–,
Maxon please just get out! I didn’t mean for it to come out so harsh, but I couldn’t think with him in my head. It felt like he was standing right behind me caressing my body with his rough, sensual hands. His words felt like little kisses on my mind because of the soft tender tone.
Fine. I love you, he whispered. I could feel him pulling from my mind but before he got too far, I replied I love you too. I could feel his strained smile and I reciprocated the gesture.
“I can do a lot more than you think Nova. Bring her in,” he shouted at a figure behind me.
“Let go of her. Leave her alone,” Alex growled. He was struggling against the man who had him pressed into the floor.
I slowly turned around and saw a man dragging in a beaten and battered Noni. She had a scared look on her face, which was unusual for Noni’s tough demeanor. The sight of her like that broke my heart. She struggled and cried for the man to let her go, for him not to touch her. I had never heard Noni beg anyone for anything before and seeing it now just didn’t seem right. It made me feel like this was some sort of sick, twisted dream or something.
I watched as Noni gave one hard yank and wrenched free from the man’s grip. She immediately tried to run for Alex.
“No babe just go,” he shouted as soon as he noticed her coming his way.
I could see how torn she was about leaving him, but she nodded her head and tried to reach the door but the same man who held her slammed her into the floor. Alex, Maxon and I let out fierce growls as we watched him slide his disgusting hands over her body trying to reach for her hands. She cried and threw her head back catching him in the nose. Blood quickly poured for his head.
“Stupid bitch,” he groaned and slapped her.
In seconds, I was ripping the man away from Noni. I let my wolf free and she took great pleasure in tearing the man apart. My wolf and I looked at the men who began to surround us, taking in how many there were their weapons. We made sure Noni was out of the way before I felt my extended claws tear into one of the first men to jump at me.
I could feel my wolf’s happiness as she finally got to rip someone apart. If I had known that this was all it took to keep her from growling in my head every ten minutes, I would have let her take more control sooner.
I could hear Maxon and Alex struggling to get free to help me, but I really didn’t need any help. My wolf and I had ripped through almost all the men and soon I’d be able to get the men away from them and go home. I didn’t want to kill Marc. He was grieving over the loss of his mate, and he was looking for someone to blame because he couldn’t protect her.
Any of us would be the same, I thought.
My wolf and I were too preoccupied with ripping through Marc’s men to notice him move closer to the man who was holding Alex. If we were paying attention to our surroundings, we would have noticed the silver pipe that was in his hands. It glistened if the sun hit it right, how could someone miss that pipe?
If we had been paying attention, I could’ve stopped him. I was the only one fast enough to stop him. if I was paying attention, I would have understood the meaning behind Marc’s question. If we had been paying attention Noni’s scream wouldn’t have shocked us.
“Nova let’s play the question game. First question. How many people have to die before you use your gifts to stop me,” Marc asked. The next thing I heard was Noni’s piercing screams.
I could smell the blood as soon it leaked from his body. I felt my eyes tear up as I turned and looked at Alex with the silver pipe protruding from his back. I know we could all hear the final beats his heart took as he died, and then that was it. There were no final words, no last longing looks, nothing. His heart gave out as the poison made its way into his heart, just two beats and then nothing. Noni screamed again. I dropped the man in my hands and made my way over to Alex.
“Alex,” Noni cried. “Alex get up.”
No. No. No. No. No. No. Come on Alex get up. You can’t be dead, I cried in my head. “Alex,” I shouted. Damn near shouted in his ear. “Alex stop fucking around this isn’t funny.”
“Ma lune, mon coeur, mon amour se lèvent s'il vous plaît,” she pleaded. {My moon, my heart, my love get up please.}
“Noni he’s not going to get up,” Maxon said softly.
I could hear the sadness in his voice. I knew that he was trying to swallow the tears that were building in his eyes. I couldn’t bring myself to turn my head and look at him; if I did, I know I would just lose it.
“No! Shut up, Maxon! He will get up.” She crawled to his lifeless body and placed her hand on his face.
“Lèves mon amour,” she whispered into his face. {Get up my love.}
“Maxon if this is one of your fucking games to make me sure more of my powers, I will really kill you this time. Alex get the hell up,” I shouted getting angry. He didn’t move.
“Babe. He’s—” I cut him off.
“Alex get up and yell surprise already. You’re scaring Noni.” I hit him playfully. Then I pushed his lifeless body. “Alex.” I punched him. “Alex,” I said again. My voice cracked as my mind started to realize the truth and the finality of it.
“Alex, je t'aime.” Noni leaned forward and kissed his blood-stained lips, but I was still too busy beating his body for a response to care about what she was doing. I just wanted my brother back. {Alex, I love you.}
“Nova, baby, he’s gone,” Maxon cried.
“No, he can’t be.”
“He is,” Noni said, answered me. I don’t know what it was, but it was something about Noni saying it that made it a reality.
“Marc,” I growled out, but when I looked up scanning the room for him, he was nowhere to be found. I cursed. “He must have let.”
“Noni behind you,” Maxon called.
“I know,” she whispered. She looked at me and smiled. “I’ll tell Alex that you love him.” With that Marc snapped her neck and dropped her body on the floor, stabbing her through her heart with another silver pipe.
“What about now Nova? Are you going to use your powers now,” he asked smiling evilly at me.
I let out a choked sound.
My best friend was dead.
Marc killed her without even caring about taking a life. My blood ran cold. I couldn’t hear anything or see anything else other than Noni and Alex’s bodies. They lay there so still as blood seeped from them and stained the hard floors. I reached out to touch Noni’s face but immediately pulled my hand back. I could already feel her body losing heat. There was nothing inside of her, or Alex, nothing but an empty space. A cold empty space.
