Outlaw Rapido Clint strode into the Texas "chicken ranch" with women on his mind and the Texas Rangers on his trail. Cap Fog 4

That there should be an attempt to kill him did not surprise Mr. J. G. Reeder. Cap Fog 6
J. T. Edson
Nobody noticed the little Texan till the trouble began...It was a typical country-house party, though perhaps a touch more decorous than most - perhaps even a tiny bit dull. Then suddenly all hell broke loose. The host was found murdered and the house was bristling with hard men whose methods of extracting information were anything but polite. But nobody bothered about Rapido. And Rapido kept pretty much to himself. In fact the slow-moving, slow-talking Texan seemed remarkably ill-named. That is until danger threatened, and the quiet man, transformed into a deadly fighting machine, treated the English to a showdown worthy of Gunfight at the OK Corral.

The prosecution suspect, "Handsome" Phil Foote, hired a slick lawyer who practice was crookeder than a rattler's path. Eyewitness began to vanish. Money changed hands. A pair of hardcase drifters provided a bogus alibi. Suddenly it looked like an open-and-shut-case. But nobody figured on the hard-riding vengeance of Company "Z".

The Death-Cap Dancers mb-59
Part #59 of "Mrs Bradley" series by Gladys Mitchell
While en route to visit relatives, Hermione Lestrange falls into company with three agreeable women who are spending their autumn holiday in a forest cabin. Out for a drive, the group discovers a battered bicycle by the side of the road, and closer inspection reveals the unfortunate owner, seemingly dead from head wounds, her body found in a nearby ravine. The police are contacted, but Hermione becomes concerned that suspicion may fall on herself and her new acquaintances, as the scene resembles a hastily covered-up automobile accident. Fearing the worst, she rings up her great-aunt and voices her fears.
The young women are ultimately exonerated, but in a quite unforseen way: there is a second murder, and an attempted third, and each of the victims or near-victims (including the roadside casualty) is a member of a touring folk-dancing troupe staying at a local hostel. The newest attacks occured after a performance of hornpipe- and morris-dancing which Hermione and her friends had attended. One dancer was set upon and her body pushed into a broom closet; another troupe member--a man still wearing a lady's wig to replace the absent cyclist in dances--was knocked unconscious and left for dead in the bushes outside. While Inspector Ribble concentrates his investigation on the movements of the folk-dance group, Dame Beatrice Lestrange Bradley considers a longer list of suspects. The Home Office psychoanalyst also imagines a wider range of scenarios than her more dogmatic police counterpart, some of which put Hermione and her friends in danger. Sending her great-niece (and her group) back to her father's pig farm in Stanton St. John, Dame Beatrice builds the case study of a very disturbed individual--someone who takes pleasure in pushing the death-cap mushroom into a victim's wounds.

Hyenas cap-10
Part #10 of "Collins and Pine" series by Joe R. Lansdale
Horror / Mystery & Thrillers / Literature & Fiction
Hyenas marks the always-welcome return of Joe R. Lansdale’s most indelible fictional creations: Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. Once again, the embattled but resilient duo find themselves enmeshed in a web of danger, duplicity, and escalating mayhem. The result is a tightly compressed novella that is at once harrowing, hilarious, and utterly impossible to put down.
The story begins with a barroom brawl that is both brutal and oddly comic. The ensuing drama encompasses abduction, betrayal, robbery, and murder, ending with a lethal confrontation in an East Texas pasture. Along the way, readers are treated to moments of raucous, casually profane humor and to scenes of vivid, crisply described violence, all related in that unmistakable Lansdale voice. An essential addition to an already imposing body of work, Hyenas shows us both the author and his signature characters at their inimitable best. It doesn’t get better than this.
Hyenas also includes the bonus Hap Collins short story, “The Boy Who Became Invisible”.
From Publishers Weekly In Lansdale's wry, casually violent novella about roughneck buddies Hap Collins (white and straight) and Leonard Pine (African-American and gay), the two knights-errant befriend a hapless fellow whose younger, weaker brother has fallen in with extremely bad company—he's just joined a gang of bank robbers whose leader is used to increasing his own share of the loot by killing the other gang members. As usual, the dialogue is deadpan tart and the action extreme but convincing. Readers will find themselves simultaneously grinning and flinching. The book also includes "The Boy Who Became Invisible," a story Hap tells about something he witnessed years before, perhaps explaining why he's inclined to stand up for people who aren't as good at defending themselves as he and Leonard grew up to be. Lansdale (Vanilla Ride) once again proves he's the East Texas master of redneck noir.
