A Nothing Special New Year, page 12
part #7.50 of Nothing Special Series
“Oh god, El. Deeper,” Jesse whined.
Mason kissed the side of Jesse’s flushed cheek and along his jaw until his lips were pressed against the rim of his ear. He slid the rest of the way inside until he was wrapped around Jesse’s back, holding him close to him. “Fuck. You feel so damn good, Jess.”
The heat from the fire was nothing compared to how hot Jesse felt deep inside. Emotions swam through Mason’s mind, confusing and exhilarating at the same time. He and Jesse fit together like a lock and key though they were different in many ways. Age was one. But, Mason could definitely see himself with a younger, but mature man like Jesse. Morally decent to the core, goal oriented, and ready to settle down and make a life for himself. All the things Mason was ready for too.
“You’re so tight around me.” Mason rocked in and out of Jesse’s scorching channel with short, shallow strokes. He fought not to explode, to stall, but the muscles in his thighs tightened, and he knew he was only delaying the inevitable. Mason wanted to watch every look of pleasure that crossed Jesse’s gorgeous face, but the bliss was too powerful and his eyes fell closed.
Jesse clutched Mason’s forearm where he had it secured across his chest, his other hand fisting the sheets. Mason’s toes curled, and he cursed in anguish as Jesse started to snap his ass back to meet his thrusts. “You’re gonna make me come like that,” Mason confessed and reached around to jerk Jesse’s cock that was leaking onto the blanket.
Jesse arched his back, his elongated neck straining as he hollered Mason’s name and shot his seed across the covers. Mason felt the lean muscles in Jesse’s body pull taut, and he continued to stroke him slowly until he’d stopped shooting and his warm essence ran over his knuckles.
“You’re so deep inside me, Ellis.” Jesse’s muscles squeezed around his cock and yanked his orgasm from him too fast for him to give a warning.
He sucked on Jesse’s throat to muffle his wail and buried himself as deep as he could and pulsed his release inside Jesse until it felt like they’d become one. He was hugging Jesse so tightly to him he may have been struggling to breathe, but Mason couldn’t let go. They were a mess of long, exhausted limbs and lazy hands that still caressed and explored as they calmed and let the earth come back down to them.
Mason burrowed his face in Jesse’s hair and inhaled the enticing scent of his shampoo. His lover was quiet, his smile serene, his eyes radiant as he watched the flames in front of him.
“I’ve never felt as special as I do right now,” Jesse whispered.
“You are special to me,” Mason answered, cupping Jesse’s chin in his palm and turning him so he could see how much he meant it. “What we just did… is really special to me too.”
“I didn’t know it could be like that.”
“Me either,” Mason replied.
They didn’t speak promises or declarations they weren’t ready to make, but their lovemaking had been epic enough that Mason knew Jesse wouldn’t leave his arms unless he fucked it up and forced him away.
Not a chance in hell of that happening.
Mason intended to get up and get a washcloth to clean them up, but he closed his eyes for a second, and the next thing he knew the sun was beaming through his sheer living room curtains. He reached for Jesse, but he wasn’t there, his side of the blankets cold as if he’d been gone for a while. Mason sat up, and that’s when he saw a naked Jesse in his kitchen—with only an apron tied in the front protecting his goodies—frying bacon and scrambling eggs.
It was a sight that damn near brought tears to Mason’s eyes. He’d been waiting for this for so long.
Mason
One month later.
“Fuck, motherfuckin’-stupid-ass-machine.” Mason fumed and threw his mouse across the bullpen. “I just want to print my goddamn report. Shit!”
Clark chuckled, too used to Mason’s technology tantrums to bother to glance up from what he was doing. There were several curses and some guffaws that rose up from his colleagues, but he ignored it like always. Jesse had texted him a half hour ago and said he was about to get on the road. If Mason didn’t hurry up and get out of there, his sweetheart would be stuck outside waiting on his front steps.
“Why don’t you just give the guy a key to your place?” Clark muttered. “Then I won’t have to hear this crap every Friday night.”
“Too soon for that,” Mason snapped, still stabbing his fingers at his keyboard.
“Then put a key under the mat or something. Gosh, you’re getting on my damn nerves.” Clark stood and put on his coat. “Well, all of my reports are done. And I have a cutie pie waiting for me at my place because I’m not afraid of commitment.”
“Erlene has a key to your house?” Mason gaped.
Clark winked. “Sure does. My house smells like cinnamon rolls and fresh bread all the time.”
“You asshole.” Mason threw a pack of Post-its at his partner’s back. “Why aren’t you sharing?”
“You and Jesse come over on Sunday to watch the game. Erlene’s making dinner.” He shrugged. “I guess I can share this once.”
“Sounds good, man,” Mason agreed, knowing Jesse would love to see Erlene again since he asked Clark about her all the time. His partner was almost to the door when Mason called out, “And by the way, I’m still waiting on my Braves box seats email confirmation. I want them for this season, not next year. A bet’s a bet, Sarge.”
“Yeah, yeah. I know. You won fair and square.” Clark waved him off and hurried out the door.
“Here’s your reports, Mase,” Free said, dropping the stack of papers in his outbox. “I told you. Stop beating up your computer. It’s done nothing to you.”
“The hell it hasn’t.” Mason powered off his demonic device just as Jesse strolled in through the precinct doors. He looked stylish in his denim jeans and camel-colored corduroy blazer. Heads turned in appreciation as he moved with purpose, but Jesse didn’t seem to notice. His once-sad brown eyes were now radiant and full of life and directly on Mason.
“Hey, you.” Mason wished he could kiss those tender lips and show Jesse how much he missed him this week, but that wouldn’t be very professional. “What are you doing here?”
“I thought I’d surprise you,” Jesse said. “Besides, I wanted to see your desk. Clark said it would be the one with the busted computer monitor.”
“This one right here.” Free pointed. “I was just about to go retrieve his mouse from over there against the wall.”
Jesse sucked his teeth. “You and that temper, Ellis.”
“You haven’t seen my temper, baby,” Mason answered, giving Jesse a look that said maybe he’d let him see it later.
“And how are you, Free?” Jesse blushed, clearing his throat. “It’s good to see you.”
“You too, man. How are you and Felix working out at your new place?”
“It’s really nice. It’s quiet there, which might be the best part,” Jesse said. “Did Ellis tell you I started a teaching position at Holly Springs Elementary school last week? It’s fifth grade English and reading comprehension, and I’m already loving it.”
“No. That is amazing news. And I promise I had nothing to do with you getting that job.” Free smirked.
“I know that.” Jesse laughed in that carefree way that made Mason’s heart skip a beat.
“I was just about to ask Mase if he wanted to grab some coffee with me and the guys before he went home, but I see he has a better option.”
“Indeed,” Mason said and took Jesse’s hand. “Rain check.”
An elderly man in a worn cowboy hat ambled inside with his cane in one hand and a brick in the other. “Isn’t that…”
“Yeah it is,” Free finished, his eyes wide. “That’s Mr. Walker, Bull’s father. What in the hell is he doing out at this hour?”
“I don’t know but it doesn’t look good.” Mason shook his head.
“There must be a problem on his ranch,” Free tapped some keys on his tablet. “I haven’t gotten any notifications from his security system. Hell. Maybe the storm blew some of them down.”
Mason asked Jesse to sit in Clark’s chair while he waved Mr. Walker over to his desk. “Mr. Walker, do you remember me? I’m Officer Mason. I took you and your son’s vandalism report a few months ago and introduced you to Freeman.”
“Of course I do.” Mr. Walker wiped furiously at his forehead.
“Please sit down.” Mason pointed to the client chair beside his desk. “What are you doing out this time of morning, sir?”
“Well, I’d prefer not to be, but I didn’t know anywhere else to go.” The old man shook his head. “That there brick was thrown through my living room window about an hour ago.”
Mason took the brick and read the note that was secured to it with a rubber band. It was a warning to leave or there’d be plenty more where that came from. “I didn’t know you were still having problems out there on your farm.”
“It’s getting out of control. My son is so damn stubborn, he hasn’t wanted to call Free or his boyfriend, Hart, for help… so I came myself.” Mr. Walker stomped his cane angrily on the floor. “I don’t know why someone is after us.”
“This is serious,” Free said, tapping on his tablet. “It looks like the cameras I set up on the backside of the property have been damaged.”
“Where’s your son?” Mason asked, remembering the stocky cowboy in the big black Stetson who’d come with his father the first time they filed a complaint.
Now it was happening again, or still happening. Mason logged back in to his computer to take Mr. Walker’s statement. It was past time for him to go home and spend some much-needed time with Jesse, but he had a soft spot for Mr. Walker, and Mason hated that he and his son were still being bullied on their own property after all this time.
“Bull took after them on Smoky, but he lost them. He’s so angry I don’t know what he might do. I don’t know what to do either.” Mr. Walker sighed. “I was hoping to see one of you boys here tonight.”
“My boyfriend is right there,” Free said as Hart was making his way through the maze of desks in the bullpen. He had on his crisp white SWAT Captain T-shirt and dark navy cargo pants instead of his black tactical uniform, since they were out of the field for the next month for recertifications. “We were just about to head out, but I know he’ll want to help.”
“Walker,” Hart greeted in his loud, gruff voice that all SWAT members seemed to possess and stuck his hand for the old man to shake. Hart crossed his big arms over his barrel chest and added, “Nothing but trouble would bring you out this time of night. What’s going on?”
“I think I need you fellas’ help again. My boy’s too proud to ask, but I’m not.” Mr. Walker looked directly at Hart. “He’s gonna get himself killed. We ain’t in Texas anymore. He can’t just jump on his goddamn horse and handle it his way.”
“I’ll ask God if Ruxs, Green, and the guys can get out there later this evening and take a look,” Free told his boyfriend.
Hart slowly shook his bald head, running his hand over his thick beard. “No. There’s no time for that. God’s team just came off a big bust—they’ll be tied up with the prosecutor’s office for weeks.”
Mason winked at Jesse, remembering how much of a role he’d played in helping God secure the information he needed to get those dangerous drugs off the street. “Clark and I can go out there. I’ll see if I can get Tansy and Berdy to cover for us.”
“Out of your jurisdiction, Mason,” Hart noted.
“Let me go,” a confident, raspy voice said from behind them.
They all turned and saw Fox—Hart’s SWAT lieutenant—approaching with a sly grin on his face. “Come on, Cap. It won’t take me no time to find whoever the hell is doing this.”
Hart and Fox exchanged looks as if they were communicating in their own language. “It’d make more sense for me to send the sheriff’s department over there.”
“Again, you mean.” Fox ran his hand through the shorn strands of his silver-and-black hair. “Come on, Hart. Those guys have been investigating the same thing for months. I’m sorry, but those motherfuckers couldn’t find titties in a strip club.”
Mr. Walker and Jesse both released a startled bark of laughter.
Fox clamped his hand over his mouth. “Shit, sorry. The language comes with the job.”
Mr. Walker shrugged. “You can curse until the cows come home, just as long as you get these hoodlums to stay off my property before my son is put in jail for murder.”
“I’m on it.” Fox nodded. He and Hart exchanged serious expressions.
“You take a look only, see what you can dig up… and that’s all you do. Report what you find to the sheriff’s department in Walker’s county and let them make the arrest,” Hart ordered his lieutenant. “No cowboy shit, Fox. I mean it. You don’t need any more negative press.”
“Right, right. I got it. You can trust me. I’ll be in and out,” Fox smirked. “Of the county, I mean.”
“Damn,” Hart muttered. “This is gonna be a mistake.”
“Very slick, Fox.” Free chuckled as if this was some kind of inside joke the three of them had going. “But don’t you think Bull is going to get suspicious when you return with his father? His dad comes in to make a vandalism report and comes back with a SWAT lieutenant?”
“You let me worry about that, Freeman. I’m Fox. Being slick and suspicious is what I do.”
Jesse didn’t complain a peep as he sat there silently while Mason completed Mr. Walker’s paperwork and got his complaint filed. He left the older man in Free’s very capable hands, knowing he’d get him taken care of. Mason didn’t know why Fox was so eager to take such a simple assignment on a farm that would ordinarily be tasked to a rookie before the city used one of its most valuable resources. But he sure looked eager as hell. There was something there, a secret Mason wasn’t privy to, but maybe one day he would be.
“You ready, Jess?” Mason asked, putting his heavy jacket on over his uniform. “I kinda feel like pancakes.”
“IHOP.” Jesse smiled warmly.
“Yes, please,” Mason said. “I’m starved.” A notification chimed on his cell phone, and he paused, staring at the recently sent email.
“Everything okay, Ellis?” Jesse frowned.
“Um, yeah.” Mason laughed. “I forgot I signed up for a New Year’s singles meet retreat. They’re asking for me to confirm.”
“Oh,” Jesse said almost numbly.
Mason tapped a few keys, then put his phone away. “I signed up for that six months ago.” Before I met you, beautiful.
“Did… are you going?” Jesse asked in a low tone, walking stiffly beside him.
Outside, in the cold of the brisk Atlanta winter, Mason took Jesse—his friend, his lover—in his arms. “No, Jess. My New Year’s plans seemed to have changed. Besides, that retreat is for singles. And while I’m not married, I don’t consider myself single. Because I happen to have a very hot boyfriend in my arms right now that I’m kinda crazy about.”
Jesse wrapped his arms around Mason’s waist and kissed him with a passion that said they weren’t going to have the patience to stop and eat pancakes. It’d been five days since he’d had Jesse’s legs locked around his shoulders. Breakfast could wait.
