So, looking back through what was in book 14 for this recap, I gotta say, a lot of stuff happened in that one, huh? Lots of plot points wrapped up, important fights that took place, and further exploration and happening of events hinted at or foreshadowed many books ago.
Given that, I would really expect most people to have a general idea of what happened in the last book, but let’s be honest here, lots of you freaks read so damn much that everything is probably all jumbled together, making you really need these things. Doesn’t help that the Primal Hunter can be considered rather... generic in places. Which isn’t entirely my fault. The genre just has certain tropes and norms that I happen to like, sometimes a bit too much, but in my defense, other authors also took inspiration from me... after I also took inspiration from a whole bunch of other popular series when writing the Primal Hunter...
Anyway, what was this supposed to be again? Oh. Right. A recap. Here we go:
Book 14 started right as the Prima Guardian Event really heated up, with Prima Guardians being killed left and right as the different factions of the Milky Way Galaxy competed to make allies and gain as much influence as possible.
On one side, Ell’Hakan and the gods associated with Yip of Yore, who wanted to upset the status quo of the multiverse alongside the Holy Church, which had a deal with Ell’Hakan, and on the other, Jake and whoever he could scramble to work with him. Of course, things were a little more confusing than just that, seeing as Jake and the Malefic Viper were cooking up a scheme to make it seem like they were on bad terms, ultimately hoping to trick Ell’Hakan and Yip of Yore into believing they could turn Jake against the Viper. To really sell this lie, they also couldn’t appear close with Valhal, as Valhal had positioned themselves as a faction wanting to poach Jake.
All in all, a complicated situation where Jake needed all the help he could get to keep things stable. Which is why it didn’t help when the Fallen King died for the second time in his life at the end of book 13, killed by a creature known as the Desolate Child of Loss.
A creature we learned about in this book was something called a False God. A creature born of faith energy and other auspicious circumstances, resulting in a powerful and rare being that often served as totems or items of worship for small, isolated factions across the multiverse. This False God was very different, though, as it turns out it came from a planet of orcs who started to believe that Ell’Hakan, the Celestial Child, was an actual god, forming the Desolate Child of Loss in the process.
However, seeing as Ell’Hakan is not actually a god (spoiler), but just a manipulative bastard with an overpowered Bloodline that controls emotions, the outcome was less than ideal, and the entire planet ended up killing themselves in the formation of the False God. A False God that now only had the singular goal of spreading desolation to the rest of existence, in the belief that doing so would help them.
Jake, upon hearing that Ell’Hakan was the – albeit indirect - cause of this creature and thus also the King’s death, very much reaffirmed his decision to kill the fucker. He couldn’t say that, though, as again, Jake was trying to act as if he wanted to abandon the Viper and thus no longer be the enemy of Ell’Hakan and Yip.
Something Jake discusses with others on Earth, including Miranda, Jake’s resident manager of all that is his on Earth, and hopefully soon the entire galaxy, as well as the Sword Saint, the Transcen dent swordsman who was chummy with the Primordial of Time.
The latter of which warned Jake that Ell’Hakan was far more than just a manipulator, but also a skilled fighter in his own right. Not that Jake would ever let that stop him, as the death of the Chosen was already predetermined.
Jake would make sure to enter the fight prepared, though, which was why he got to work on a very important skill upgrade while also getting fully back in top form after his Palate of the Malefic Viper accident, where he ended up breaking one of his skills and needed Villy to help patch him up. A soul injury that he could only fully heal on his own, but for now, it was stable enough not to impact him too much as long as he mended the worst of the damage to his soul in general.
A period of relative calm ensued, with everyone doing their thing as Jake continued working on upgrading his Protean Arrow skill, wanting to include Eternal Hunger somehow to make a far stronger arrow for his opening blow or for sudden, powerful sneak attacks during fights.
After much work, Jake succeeded in creating an arrow that integrated his mythical weapon while also finally being more or less in fighting condition once more. Just in time, too, as not long after the final Prima Guardian of the galaxy was slain, and with that, the system event came to an end.
With that, Jake got a cool upgraded ring, which was nice, and came in part due to Jake being promoted to an Administrator of the Seat of the Exalted Prima. A promotion that would only become relevant once he reached B-grade. Things weren’t all good, though, as Ell’Hakan had higher contributions to the system event than Jake, in large part due to Jake being out of commission for the majority of it.
To make matters worse, right as the event ended, chaos erupted across the galaxy with different smaller factions fighting, monsters from fallen planets spreading and invading elsewhere, with Ell’Hakan, the Holy Church, and all his other goons certainly involved.
At the same time, outside of the ninety-third universe, the Order of the Malefic Viper also experienced setback after setback. They quickly lost their expanded territory to the attacks of Yip and the many gods who followed him. Momentum had fully turned against the Order, and in the eyes of all observers, they were losing the conflict.
An observation that only served to further strengthen Yip of Yore and grant him direct power as he seemed more and more likely to become the first Primordial Slayer in history.
All according to the Viper’s sneaky snake plan.
Because the Primordial had a grand scheme cooking where his Chosen would indeed turn fully into a heretic with the aim to become a Usurper (Usurper: term describing someone who usurps the Records of a fallen god, effectively becoming their second coming, and could be viewed as the heretic version of being a Chosen).
The scheme was to mix truth with lies, making it seem as if the evil Viper had forced Jake to remain his Chosen and had even used his Transcendence to bind Jake further, taking advantage of the fact that it had been detected when Villy saved Jake from his stupid Palate of the Malefic Viper accident.
Jake turning to join Ell’Hakan and Yip of Yore would be a bit too suspicious, though, so rather than act as if he was going to join them, he would instead join Valhal, once again taking advantage of prior events where Valdemar had shown interest in Jake, and Jake had displayed Legacy skills related to Valdemar in the past.
Plans moved along, and after Jake discussed the matter with Miranda, as Ell’Hakan and the Church also plotted on their end, Jake soon traveled with Carmen – Runemaiden and most influential figure of Valhal in their galaxy - to “join” Valhal on the planet within the Milky Way they had control over.
There, Jake had some fun, got drunk, fought people, and overall did what one would expect to do at a faction primarily consistent with battle maniacs and alcohol enthusiasts. All to sell his cover as someone genuinely interested in joining Valhal, of course. No way that Jake actually enjoyed doing those kinds of things. Definitely not.
Alas, Jake soon had to get down to business and do what he had actually come there to do. Alongside the higher-ups of Valhal, Jake has a magical conference call with Ell’Hakan and Jacob, the Augur from the Holy Church. During this meeting, Jake “proved” that he indeed was antagonistic and even tried to renounce his True Blessing, which obviously failed due to his status as a Heretic-Chosen, making it impossible for him to renounce it. Of course, the lie he sells is that the Viper used his Transcendence to stop Jake from doing so.
Alongside this and several other half-truths, Jake successfully tricked Ell’Hakan and everyone else involved, allowing the meeting to move along relatively smoothly and concluding with them agreeing to Jake publicly shit-talking the Viper during Yip’s confrontation with the Primordial, announcing to the entire multiverse just how shit of a Patron the Malefic Viper truly is. Oh, and they agreed to a temporary truce in the Milky Way Galaxy, making things calm down for a little bit.
Just a little, though.
As time passed, the Order of the Malefic Viper continued to weaken, losing members every day and all territory, until they were finally back to Primordial-4, where their headquarters were located. Moreover, the Primordial was noticeably absent during this time, leaving everything to the Lord Protector – also known as Snappy – who had to hold down the fort.
Even the true higher-ups of the Order were worried, as no one knew the Viper’s plans besides Jake and very few others, making them all worry. Which was, again, part of the Viper’s plan. A brilliant test of loyalty to see who would abandon ship once things got tough, and who would stick with the Order till the very end. That, or who simply believed that the Viper was a being who would always come out on top in the end, anyway.
In the time leading up to the confrontation between Yip and the Viper, Jake stayed with Valhal and did alchemy, also preparing for the fight with Ell’Hakan that would come after.
Alas, soon the day came for the confrontation between gods standing at the apex of the multiverse. Dark clouds closed over Primordial-4 as an army of gods gathered to crush the Order of the Malefic Viper, with Yip of Yore taking the lead. Moreover, as the Lord Protector was ready to make his last stand, the situation got even more complicated as Valhal made their entrance, led by Valdemar, the God of War.
Not there to fight, but to observe and facilitate the duel between Yip and the Viper. Oh, and to allow Jake the opportunity to prove himself the certifiably worst Chosen in the history of the multiverse.
Through a ritual, Jake was summoned for all the gods observing to see, as he proceeded to flame the fuck out of Villy, really digging deep and selling the idea he was over the snake god’s bullshit. An act that only further empowered Yip of Yore as the Viper only appeared weaker and weaker, even his Chosen having abandoned him in his final moments.
Did Jake feel a little bad about flaming his buddy? Sure, but the levels gained from his wonderful act as a Heretic-Chosen made up for any negative feelings.
With everything ready, Yip of Yore and the Malefic Viper finally faced off against one another as Yip used a Void Sphere to bring them into their own little world where they could fight to their heart’s content, away from the eyes of everyone else, while also not causing any destruction to the true universe.
A fight between apex gods ensued, where both spent more time talking than actually fighting, and the details as to the actual fight are kept rather vague on purpose, as let’s be fair, I’m not gonna do a full-on fight with gods quite yet in the series. Also, this confrontation was more about two schemers who thought they had accounted for everything and were simply getting one over the other party.
Turns out that in this particular battle, the old won out over the new. After a hard-fought battle with many reveals and twists, Yip successfully killed the Malefic Viper... his dragon molt anyway.
Because while Yip had planned to reap the Records of being the first Primordial Slayer and stealing the Viper’s Path, the Viper had a far more direct plan of consuming Yip in mind. A plan that comes to fruition as it’s also revealed that, quite frankly, poor Yip never stood a chance in the first place, and was always to become the Primordial’s snack.
With Yip turned into a healthy meal to make the Viper even more powerful – with a small piece cut out for Jake’s later consumption to also reward the snake god’s favorite Chosen – the Viper returned to the real universe and did a bit of cleanup by killing all the gods there who had come to support Yip.
