“I have a table,” said the man whom Senta assumed was Francesco.

“What’s his story?” she asked him, pointing at the now lone figure.

“He’s that sailor, the one in the news stories.”

“I’m afraid I haven’t seen the news recently.”

“He was shipwrecked for many years all alone on an island. He was rescued and came home to Brechalon only last month. The reporters, they keep writing his story.”

“You may pass my table on to someone else. I believe I’ve found my dining companion.” She stepped through the open-air seating and took one of the chairs recently vacated by a note-taking reporter. The man quickly stood as she sat down.

“Oh, that feels good,” said Senta, stretching out her legs beneath the table. “I don’t think anyone tells you just how tiring carrying a child is going to be.”

  “I think that’s common knowledge, Mrs…”

“It’s Miss… Miss Bly.” She offered him her hand.

  “Senta Bly?”

  “So, you’ve heard of me?”

“Of course, but more than that,” he said, taking her hand. “We’ve met. Lieutenant Kieran Baxter, late of His Majesty’s Navy. Years ago I served on the HMS Minotaur—when you and the other first colonists were traveling to Birmisia. We dined together once. You were just a little girl then.”

“You must have been a little boy, yourself.”

  “I was… I was a young man, younger anyway.”

“And here we are dining together again.” She smiled. “You haven’t eaten already, have you?”

  “I’ve only just ordered.”

Senta snapped her fingers. “I’ll have what he’s having,” she called to Francesco.

She turned back to him. “So what are you doing these days, Mr. Baxter?”

  “I honestly don’t know yet.”

  “No family? No business interests?”

  “No. None.”

  “No prospects?” she asked.

“No, I suppose not. I just returned to the kingdom. The only real decision that I’ve made is that I am through with the navy. You haven’t moved back permanently to Bech, have you?”

A waiter, not Francesco, sat two large sandwiches filled to overflowing with ham and cheese, in front of them. Senta waited while he poured her tea from a pot on the table.

“Oh, no. I have my home in Birmisia. But I plan on spending a month or two here in the capital. Following that, I think I’ll take a tour around the world. I don’t think I shall return to Mallon for about six months or eight months—well after my impending arrival.” She placed a hand on her stomach.

  “That sounds… nice… and expensive.”

“Well it so happens that I have an ungodly amount of money. My former mistress, Zurfina…”

“Yes, I remember her. I’ve even had dreams… well, never mind.”

“She was declared legally dead and I inherited her percentage in… well, a percentage of essentially everything in Birmisia.”

“That must be nice,” he said. “I mean, you know, the money, not that she’s dead.”

“Legally dead,” corrected Senta. “In any case, I plan to enjoy myself for a while. In fact, I plan to enjoy myself for the duration of my life. You’ll forgive me if I say so, but you look like a man that hasn’t enjoyed himself in a long, long time.”

  He shrugged.

“I have an idea. Would you care to go sightseeing with me? That is, if you don’t mind traveling with an unmarried woman carrying a bastard child.”

  “I… um…”

“You don’t have to decide now,” she said. “You may let me know after you finish your sandwich.”
