Body on Show: A cozy mystery novella (Muddlebay Mysteries Book 3), page 8
In the end, Flynn didn’t have to travel to Plymouth for Slaughter’s confession, as the mechanic confessed as soon as he saw the police in his yard. He admitted that he didn't exactly tamper with the exhaust, but realised there were leaks and didn't mend them, or draw anyone’s attention to them.
‘The specialist exhaust place did a lousy job,’ he told police. ‘They only changed the back box, not the whole system. But instead of drawing attention to it, I let it be. It was just a matter of time before the Gains died.
‘You see, I was fed up with being used and not being amply rewarded. I began to feel ashamed of what we were doing. Gains had found out that I’d been dealing in false number plates. And so made me help them by giving them some too. It was all becoming too much. The pressure of it. They were talking about getting yet a third car. So, when I saw them getting fish and chips and driving back to the esplanade, I watched. Being a chilly night, they sat there with the engine running and the heating on. Gradually they fell asleep and never woke up. They looked quite peaceful really. But the car had been filling with lethal carbon monoxide from the exhaust system. Then when they were dead, I put them in the boot and left it where it was, ready for the car show.
‘And Flynn?’ the detective asked.
Kevin Slaughter hung his head in shame. ‘He was getting too close. Sorry, I just wanted to put him off the scent.’
Flynn looked puzzled. Wasn’t it Baxter who followed scents, not Flynn? Whatever, he thought. Then the detective said, ‘But you could have killed him too!’
‘That didn’t matter. I’d already killed two people, so another one wouldn’t have made any difference to my sentence,’ he said and shrugged.
Flynn was horrified at the nonchalance of the mechanic. How could anyone think so little of human life? He turned away sickened. Glad to leave the detectives from Plymouth to close the case.
For once, Flynn would be happy for Muddlebay to return to its normal quiet self, where nothing ever happened, and the sun always shone.
