Flynn and Mabel thanked Chrissie for her time and Flynn asked if she’d come to the police station and make a formal statement. Chrissie nodded, but her eyes filled with tears again, and Flynn quickly left before she started crying.

Mabel mouthed, ‘Coward,’ at him as they left.

As Flynn settled in the driver’s seat of his Morris Traveller, he pondered that it was finally beginning to look like Flynn could prove his case. It was all resting on Tyrone now, and the forensic report.

  Chapter 32

When Flynn arrived back at the police station, he saw that, finally, the forensic report had arrived in his mailbox. Flynn pulled his laptop closer to him with shaking hands.

‘You alright, Met?’ asked Elgin, not unkindly, who must have noticed Flynn’s demeanour.

Flynn had to give Fisher and Elgin their due. They’d been a lot more respectful of him since his arrest of Ollie Black. Something akin to grudging respect, at any rate. Either way, it was better than being teased the whole time.

‘What? Oh yes, fine. It’s just the report…’

‘Yeah, I know.’ Elgin swung round in his chair. ‘Let’s have it then. What does it say?’

Flynn clicked to open the document and skim read the conclusion. Ollie Black’s fingerprints, DNA from hair follicles on his laptop and saliva on the pestle and mortar all pointed to him having prepared the poison. There were syringes with his fingerprints on them, and which had traces of the poison in them and even a couple of bottles of port that had been doctored. All found in the hidden-away loft.

‘We’ve got him,’ Flynn breathed. ‘We’ve got him.’

‘Well done, Met, good work,’ said Elgin and slapped Flynn on the back, who flinched at the touch. ‘Oh, sorry,’ and Elgin shuffled away. ‘Great result though, eh?’

Flynn nodded and gave himself the satisfaction of grinning like a Cheshire cat, if only for a few moments. ‘I must tell Mabel!’ he cried and ran the short distance from the police station to the library.

He burst into the library through the double doors. ‘We’ve got him!’ he shouted to her, then, wondering why he’d not had a squeak, nor a yell, in response, he realised what he’d done. The library was full and everyone had turned to look at him, Mabel included. One customer in particular, an elderly gentleman of military bearing, hissed at Flynn. Flynn grimaced at his faux pas, after all he was in the library where silence was indeed golden, so he whispered, ‘We’ve got him!’ but it didn’t have quite the same impact.

Stifling a laugh, Mabel took his arm and dragged him outside. ‘We’ve got him?’ she asked, undisguised pleasure in her voice.

Flynn nodded enthusiastically. ‘He had a hidden loft. It was all there, Mabel. Distillery, deadly nightshade leaves and berries. The lot! And Flynn’s fingerprints and DNA everywhere. We did it!’

‘Indeed we did,’ Mabel agreed and then said, with a twinkle in her eye, ‘Oh, Flynn, I am glad I live in Muddlebay, because it’s nice and quiet and nothing ever happens here!’ and they both fell about laughing.

Especially Flynn, because, for once, he’d actually understood a joke.

  THE END

  Body at the Wedding

When a groom jilts his bride at the altar, there is outrage in Muddlebay. That is until his body is found. The bride’s father is accused of the murder, as it becomes known that he wanted his daughter to marry a nearby landowner and not the local wide-boy.

But Mabel knows the family, who own a chain of betting shops, and she just can’t believe the father would do anything like that. Not the man she knows.

But, as Flynn points out, how well do you really know people?

And what are they hiding behind their painted smiles?
