“Could we at least be friends with benefits?” I asked.
Then I paused. I never asked for that in my life. What the hell was going on with me?
“Sure. That’s fine. But don’t ask about what I’m doing. It’s better if you’re not involved,” he said.
I wondered what he meant by that.
“And Mary, I do care about you. That’s why I insist upon you not getting involved. There’s a lot here to unpack, a lot that you don’t need to worry about and it’s just…better this way,” he said.
“Alright. We can stay friends for now. I won’t bother you,” I said.
He hung up the phone, and I slumped over. Well, so much for that. Instead of having a new boyfriend, I was alone and had my dad threatening me.
I thought about asking why he didn’t want to be around me, but maybe it was best if I didn’t know.
On Monday, I went to class, looking around in hopes that Caleb would show up. But, to my disappointment, he was gone. The next few days were the same thing, and I wondered why that was. However, on the third day, he slid in the seat next to me without saying a word.
“Hey,” I said.
“Hey,” he replied.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“You could say that,” he simply said.
I looked at him, noticing the stony look on his face. This Caleb was different. Something happened, and I wanted to know what.
“Do you want to talk about it? Whatever happened, that is,” I asked.
“No. You’re better off uninvolved,” he stated.
” But what about—”
“Mary, if you know what’s good for you, you’ll shut the hell up and don’t get involved. It’s not easy being me. It’s not,” he said.
What the hell was his problem? And that attitude! I looked over at him, but he had stood up.
“I can’t stay here anymore. I’m going to skip again,” he said.
“But Caleb—”
As he walked out, I simply sat there, shocked at his behavior. I thought us having sex meant something. I thought even if we weren't friends, we’d at least try to be civil with one another. But apparently, that wasn’t happening.
“Whatever, if he’s going to be like that, I’m not getting involved,” I muttered.
He was a douchebag. It hurt being treated like that, and I couldn't help but feel sad. However, as the class went on, I thought about what Caleb said. After class, I got up and headed out the door. Outside I noticed Caleb talking to some guy.
So he never left campus.
I moved behind one of the trees, watching as Caleb walked down the road. I followed him, noticing he went into an alleyway. However, before I could say anything, I saw it.
Kicking. Screaming. Punching. Sounds of agony echoed through the alleyway. And all I saw was Caleb, with a stony look on his face as he beat the shit out of a random stranger, getting blood on his hands.
And the entire time, he had a look of boredom.
