Fishing In Fire, page 16
She moved closer to him and they held hands. “How will you top last year?”
“I’ll start by bringing in a deer instead of a wolf.” He laughed, but then grew serious. “And I’ll invite you to come along.”
McKenzie must have said something really funny across the library by the desk. Swann and Morgan laughed.
Yumi stepped up to them, watching them carefully. “So you two . . .”
“Yep,” Hunter said.
“About time,” Yumi said.
Annette nodded toward Mason, who pretended to be looking over Swann’s books, but kept sneaking glances at Yumi. “And you two?”
Yumi smiled and shrugged. “We’ll see. He invited me to go fishing with him and his dad on their boat next weekend. I said yes.”
Hunter exchanged a glance with Annette. “But you’re not that big into fishing.”
“Know what, Higgins?” Yumi gave him a light tap-punch to the shoulder. “It’s growing on me.”
Kelton approached, and Swann soon followed. Annette pointed out the window. “We had the close call with the wolf, the trouble up on Storm Mountain, and then this fire. Are we really going back out there?”
“Oh yeah.” Yumi shrugged. “This is Idaho.”
Hunter nodded. “There’s so much adventure out there.”
Annette looked around at her group of friends, and then turned her attention out to the great Idaho wilderness, which stretched away over mountains and valleys and rivers for millions of acres. She sighed and smiled. “We’re just getting started.”
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
And so we reach the end of the McCall Mountain series. I hope readers have enjoyed Hunter’s Choice, Racing Storm Mountain, and Fishing in Fire as much as I have enjoyed writing them. It has been so fun sending these characters out on adventures. Thank you so much for reading. And for Fishing in Fire in particular, special thanks go:
Once again to the wonderful people of McCall, Idaho. I’m amazed at the town’s beauty, and every time I visit, I have a great time. It’s the perfect setting for books. What’s not to love about McCall?
To Matt and Mason Bridges, the greatest fishing experts. Mason, I’m so glad I was the substitute teacher in your class that one day. Thank you both for the gift of your time and for your knowledge of fishing. Any fishing errors remaining in the book are all my fault.
To Pam Watts, Matthew Kirby, Jessica Denhart, and Jennifer Schmidt, all brilliant writers and wonderful friends. Thank you for helping me in the difficult months following the betrayal of Afghanistan. Thank you very much for your patience with me. I owe you all more than I can ever repay.
To the Norton Young Readers family for all their help, with extra thanks to my editor, Simon Boughton, whose inspiration and guidance made this all possible. Thanks, Norton friends. This has been wonderful.
To my wonderful super-agent, Ammi-Joan Paquette, for connecting me with Mr. Boughton and Norton Young Readers. The McCall Mountain books wouldn’t exist without you.
To my daughter, Verity, who was so patient and encouraging while I worked on all of these books. Thanks for helping me come up with Swann Siddiq’s character. You were right. The story did need a princess.
To my wonderful wife, Amanda, whose total support in life, patience with me, and encouragement of my writing has meant everything, especially during the challenging times during which I wrote Fishing in Fire. Thank God for you. Amanda, you are my life.
