Throughout my Dad’s family, there’s always been a fair amount of eccentricity and endearing oddity. Certain patterns seem to recur, such as a keen interest in psychology, an abiding faith in the Roman Church, and a love for creepy stories. A lot of that history has crept into the Spookshow books, some of it consciously, some of it not.
Back to the wedding. I caught up with my cousin S__, the mother of the groom. S__, whom I’ve always adored and looked up to since I was a kid, shared some family business that left me reeling. “We’re all psychic,” she said. According to S__, everyone in the family has some kind of sensitivity, great or small, and that is the reason behind many of the eccentricities in the family tree. Needless to say, I was floored. To be honest, I still don’t know what to make of that claim but it does go a fair ways in how I always felt that the clan was different somehow. Here, I thought they were all just crazy. I need to explore that more and dig into the family history, but, to be honest, I’m also a little leery of doing so, wondering what types of skeletons will come tumbling out if I go scrabbling into closed closets. Do I believe it? I’m still unsure. What my cousin told me makes a lot of sense on an intuitive level, but, perhaps, that’s because I simply want it to make sense. Like Agent Mulder in the X-Files, I want to believe. Now, step back while I fling open the closet door.
