‘I know you, don’t I? Really, I mean. Not just since I woke up?’

He was holding my hand across the armrest looking deeply into my eyes, so honest and intense and simply nodded.

I thought of him in all my dark, foreboding dreams, watching over me from the shadows. Others were with him; ghosts, spectres, grey light and gloom. But I wasn’t scared. Strangely, despite the gloom and darkness, I felt a warmness from it all. How could I not? It was why I was sitting in the seat I was in today.

The plane rose and my spirits lifted. I was starting a new life where I’d see this intriguing boy every day. We settled back, the lights went off and I became sleepy. ‘Tell me the story again about the rebel viscount who travelled the world to rescue his sleeping beauty with the potion he’d fought the wicked witch for.’

Wax narrowed his eyes on me, gauging whether he liked me making fun of him or not. He could be so stern at times. He let out a weary breath as if I’d worn him down. ‘OK … well there was me … you know, your handsome, tall, dark and dangerous boyfriend.’

  ‘Username Vampire Boy,’ I added.

He gave me a nod. ‘And I contacted a mysterious girl in my dream.’

  ‘Me, Pearl White.’

He rolled his eyes. ‘Are you going to let me tell you this story or not?’

I nodded, grinning. I’d made him tell me the story a hundred times, but it never got old. I’d never let him stop telling it.

‘Well, there is my annoying younger brother, Ollie, and his even more annoying tagalong girlfriend, with the hideous laugh and all their annoying friends that I tolerate for your sake.’

  I laughed out loud.

‘You can laugh, but they never do a damn thing I say.’ He turned to face me squarely and spoke more softly. ‘But you’ll like them. They’re all waiting to see you, for real, in the flesh, for the first time …’
