Lennox patted her hand where it rested in the crook of his arm. “And I appreciate your changing your plans on my account. We’ll go to Kansas City together, settle your affairs, and retrieve Fluffy from your friend’s house.”
Amelia chuckled. “It still hasn’t fully hit me that Fluffy is all I have left in Missouri.”
“I expect it will when you see what is left of your home,” Helen said gently.
“You’re probably right. And this will make packing much simpler.” Amelia threw Lennox a sidelong glance.
He smiled. “My dear, whatever has been lost, we shall replace for you when we return.”
“I’m counting on Helen to help me.” Amelia arched her eyebrows at her daughter-in-law.
Helen smiled in return. “Oh yes. There are several shops we didn’t have time to visit this week.”
“Careful now, sir,” Daniel said. “It seems you’re giving our wives permission to shop as much as they want.”
“I know these two ladies fairly well,” Lennox assured him. “They both have good taste, but they’re also practical. They won’t bankrupt us.”
“No fear of that,” Amelia said.
They arrived at the station, and Richard transferred the luggage to the platform while the Baileys bid the Fryes a warm good-bye. At last Amelia and Lennox settled in their seats on the train. The whistle blew, and they began to move.
Lennox glanced around then leaned over to give her a quick kiss. “You see, my dear? You did find me a new bride.”
Amelia sat back smiling. “Yes, one I’m certain will love you for the rest of her life.”
