Recruits (New Haven Book 1), page 26
“What should we call it?” I asked them. “Our new city?”
“Well, this area is to protect the people and make them safe. A haven, so to speak,” Dante said.
President Brown laughed. “That’s exactly what they wanted in the beginning.”
“But they failed. We won’t,” I said, my voice confident. “This is our new haven.”
“Well, then,” President Brown said, looking over the valley below. “Welcome to New Haven.”

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
First and foremost, thanks to my husband Chad for encouraging me to write this book. I never would have done it if it weren’t for him. He challenged me to write it for NaNoWriMo in 2011, and after some back and forth, I finally agreed. That whole month of November, we’d come home from work and Chad would play Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PS3 and I’d write until well after bedtime. It was a crazy month, but one of the best experiences of my life. It kicked off my writing career. So, thank you Chad! (And Batman for keeping Chad entertained during the month.)
A very special thanks (and lots of love!) to my mama. She’s been the biggest fan of this book since the beginning (I’ll let you and Chad fight for that spot). I love having you in my corner. You’re the best mom and cheerleader an author could ask for!
Dad, thanks for telling everyone everywhere you go that your daughter is an author. I know the ladies at the Del Taco in Saratoga Springs are very proud of me!
Princess Buttercup, I can’t go without thanking you. I know it was truly confusing when Mom and Dad came home every night, went into the basement where Dad played video games and Mom wrote on her laptop she wouldn’t let you sit on. But we survived! And you’ve been my writing companion ever since. Though, you still can’t sit on my laptop.
Thanks to all my friends and family who read the first draft of this novel. I’m so sorry you had to read that, but I appreciate all your encouragement along the way! Shauna Porter, Makenzie DesRoches, Debra Wyatt, Pattie Harper, Sherrie Kirkham, Jovan Bonkosky, Kaylyn Cluff, Lindsey Cluff, Ozeanna Hortin, Amanda Craven, Casey Cheney, Jennifer Jones, Erin Young, Jessa Gagnon, Jaclyn Weist, Shannon Speirs, Evelyn Hawley, Michelle Shade, Elizabeth Jameson, Becky Morton, and probably a ton of others I’m forgetting. I mean, it’s been eight years since I’ve written the dang thing. I love you all!!
Dr Pepper, thanks for fueling my writing. I couldn’t have done it without you!! I must say, we make a great team. #PepperPack #Ambassador #DrPepperislife
