I stood up and, reaching as close as I could with the belly between us, straightened his bow tie for him. He gave me a soft smile as he lifted his chin up to give me better access to my work.

“You feeling okay?” he asked when I was finished while he gently rubbed my belly.

“Why does everyone keep asking me that? Other than being hungry all the time, I’m fine,” I said.

He chuckled down at me lovingly and brushed some crumbs from my cheek. Leaning down, he kissed me gently on the lips.

“I know,” he said. “You’re tough, tougher than me.”

  “That’s right I am.”

“In fact, at some point after tonight's festivities,” he said as I looped my arm into his and we started out of the kitchen, “I was thinking we reassess our birthing plan.”

  “Why?”

“Well, you want to have the baby at home, right?”

“Yes,” I said, encouraging him to continue.

“I thought maybe we could do it someplace safer.”

“Safer? Mother has already insisted a small medical surgery be set up in one of the rooms. She has a doctor on call to come at a moment’s notice. I don’t think it could be any safer for the baby.”

“No, not the baby. I’m worried about me. I don’t need you beasting out during the delivery and ripping me in two,” he said with a wicked smile crossing his thick lips.

“At least maybe some kind of protective safe room that I can watch the delivery from,” he continued.

“Oh you are going to be right there next to me and holding my hand no matter how hard I squeeze it,” I said, giving him a little pinch.

“Ouch,” he said dramatically, pulling his arm away and rubbing in. “See? You're too violent for me. I’ll never survive the birth.”

I rolled my eyes at him.

“I always knew you were a stuck-up prissy boy,” I said, recalling some of the things I had called him when we first met, “but I never knew you were such a wuss.”

“I helped overturn a corrupt government, defeated the Defective hoards, and stood up against my father’s Super Soldiers. But when the woman I love beasts out, she is more terrifying than all of that combined. If not wanting to be within braking distance when you have to push out our baby makes me a wuss…then I’m a wuss I guess,” he said with a shrug and a smile.

“You better watch out or I might pinch you again,” I said back, giving him a nudge.

We were in the hall outside of the grand ballroom where the large event was to take place. I could already hear the voices inside. I was pretty sure he had invited the entire nation and everyone had shown up.

“Hey,” he said, stopping outside the door and facing me. “I love you. I can’t wait to start the next chapter of our life together,” he said with so much sincerity I was sure I was going to melt in those chocolate eyes of his.

“I love you too,” I said, raising up on my tiptoes to give him a good long kiss. “And I can’t wait to see you try your hand at being a farmer with Charles,” I added with a giggle for good measure.

He smiled down at me one last time and kissed me softly. Taking a deep breath, he took my hand and together we walked through the door that would lead to the rest of our lives.
