“Come here, Mate,” Maverick growled. He scooped me off the ground and carried me inside. He was still naked as a jaybird.

“Mav,” I whispered and buried my face in his neck. “I’m ready for this.”

“Ava, this is it for me and you. You can break a bond like this, but it’s painful, both physically and emotionally. It would require distance for Zephyr to be able to look past the bond and a lot of time. You must be sure.”

He set me on the bed and knelt between my legs. I looked into his eyes, smiling when he blinked and they were gold, then seconds later another blink took them back to hazel. Zephyr saying hello. “I’m sure,” I whispered. “Except for a week being pissed at you over your idiotic decision to create distance between us, I’ve been sure since nearly the moment we met again. Our separation was a huge mistake, and we never should’ve been apart.”

I’d never been surer of anything in my life. Seeing him shot had cemented my surety that we belonged together.

He pressed his lips to mine and pushed me backward on the bed, tugging at my sneakers, then my leggings. I pushed back against him, rising enough to take my tunic over my head and unclasp my bra. When my breasts spilled out into the warm bedroom air, he fell on them, lavishing them with his tongue and teeth.

I fell back and enjoyed the ride. While his mouth played with my nipples, Maverick slipped his hand between my legs and teased my clit, making me crazy enough to want more and writhe underneath him.

  “Stop teasing me,” I gasped.

“I can’t hold back much longer,” he said in a gravelly voice. “I want you ready for me.”

“If I get any wetter, we’ll need to change the sheets,” I said with a chuckle. “I’m ready.”

He grunted and gave me an adoring look as he pushed my legs over his.

Sliding inside me with a quick thrust, I cried out at the sudden fullness of having him inside me. It was a delicious feeling.

He moaned. “Your pussy is amazing,” he said against my ear.

Maverick swiveled his hips, sliding his dick out and then deeper in the second time, thrusting until he was fully seated inside me. My orgasm built fast, his large shaft and head teasing my G-spot to the point of giving me a vaginal orgasm.

“Don’t come,” he said between clenched teeth.

I clamped my vaginal walls down to try to stop the orgasm from breaking over me. Panting, I looked up at him as he held himself still over me. “Why?” I asked.

“You’ll thank me in a minute.”

I shrugged and focused on the feel of him inside me, then ran my hands up his chest. I loved how big and strong he was, towering over me, knowing he’d protect me from anything, as he had today.

He pulled out and lifted me, scooting me up the bed. “Turn over,” he demanded.

“Yes, sir,” I said, flipping over and arching my back, displaying my wet groin in his face. He moaned. “I can’t wait, but I’ll taste you again soon.”

Maverick slid in again and set a relentless pace without warning. “I’m going to come fast with you moving like that,” I said, gasping between my words.

“Let me know when you’re on the cusp.” He sounded like he was on the cusp of his own. His voice had gone lower than I’d ever heard it. Zephyr was shining through a little.

  “Now!” I cried.

He rammed deep and bent over, biting me on the shoulder close to my neck. When his teeth broke the skin, I sank into a world of darkness, with shooting stars and pleasure. My body was a vibrating nerve of orgasmic energy as Maverick and Zephyr joined with me, making us one and yet separate. I cried out as I floated in the world, tied only to Maverick and his beast.

A cord of energy appeared between us, one end coming from them and the other me.

Crashing back to earth, I realized I was screaming his name. “Maverick! Zephyr!”

I creamed and felt the ejaculate slip out of me. Only then did Maverick come, filling me with his seed as he whispered my name. “I love you, Ava.”

He collapsed beside me and gathered me in his arms. I marveled at the connection I felt. I knew he was beside me. If he stopped touching me, and I closed my eyes, I’d know he was there.

  “This is amazing,” I whispered.

“Welcome to your new life,” he replied and nuzzled me.

  We love you.

  Two Months Later

Maddox had his first shift tonight. Everyone felt it coming. My brothers, father, and I had to stay close to him the past week or so to make sure he kept his head.

I’d planned for a while to make the night even more special for Ava. While I hadn’t known exactly when it would happen, I knew she’d always dreamed of a big wedding as a child, and though dragons didn’t typically go in for human traditions like that, what was the harm in keeping my mate happy? Marrying her in the human tradition would be fun, at worst.

It would certainly show her I cared about the things she wanted.

When we were sure the shift was in a matter of days, we’d called my grandfather, who’d wanted to come meet his great-grandson and be present to lend a hand in the shift. I appreciated that very much, as he’d been there for me for my shift in a way my father hadn’t been able to. Just like if my brothers, as betas, ever had alpha children, I’d be there for them. It was the way of the clan.

He’d arrived the day before, and just in time.

“Can I have a word with you?” I asked my beautiful mate.

She glowed, happiness shining through her eyes like I hadn’t seen from her since we were kids. Settling down with me had done wonders. We moved into her cabin, close to my clan but not in the same home. It was the best decision for both of us. We always had the ability to stay at the manor if needed, and though technically the manor was mine due to me being the alpha, it felt like my father’s home. Maybe one day we’d move up there when the kids were older, and pass our cabin on to them, but for now, it felt right. Ava was happy with the arrangement.

Maddox spent time in both homes, as did Hailey. It was hard some weekends to pry her away from my mother.

We walked out to the backyard of the manor, where we’d set up a circle in the snow. It was ceremonial, the circle didn’t help the shift, but it was pretty and a good setting for what I had planned. Everyone knew to follow us out when I led her outside. Maddox was upstairs with Jury, about to come down for his shift.

We’d decided to explain everything to Hailey after Ava had been kidnapped. She’d picked up on some of it, anyway. My daughter was intelligent, after all. But her knowing everything meant she was able to be present for the ceremony tonight.

I took Ava’s hand and walked to the center of the circle as our backyard filled with my clan. The dragons were in regular clothes, but all the humans were bundled up for the cold.

Getting down on one knee, I pulled a ring out of my pocket. It had been my mother’s and wasn’t the traditional wedding band, but Mom was convinced Ava would love it, especially when she explained the history of it. The ring had been passed down her family for generations, and she was so happy that it would go to Ava, then eventually Hailey one day.

“I love you more than I ever thought possible,” I said. “More than I did when we were kids. More than anyone could’ve predicted I was capable of.”

My family chuckled behind me. Ava looked from me to them and shrugged. “I’m happy to help.” She returned her focus to me. “I love you, too, Maverick. I can’t believe how lucky we are that we found each other again and worked this out. Everyone should have a chance at a love like this.”

“I agree, and though we’ve bonded in the way of the dragons, I want to bond with you in all ways. Will you marry me in the way of the humans?”

  “Of course,” she cried.

I stood and pulled her into my arms, arching her back and dipping her low for a kiss.

The crowd whooped and hollered, then parted as Maddox stepped forward. “Dad?” he asked. “I feel it.”

I saw the glow, probably before anyone else as his sire and alpha. “It’s time.” I held out my hand. “Come here, son.”

After I kissed Ava on her temple, she walked out of the circle. Maddox grabbed her hand and pulled her close. “Love you, Mom,” he whispered.

“Love you, too.” She kissed his forehead and let him walk to me.

He stood in front of me in his underwear. I’d worn some today because I knew I’d be in front of our entire family. Neither of us had any desire to show our junk to our mothers, though in this life, it was occasionally unavoidable for family members to see private parts. We politely looked away when the occasion arose.

Taking his hand, I let his dragon do what it instinctively knew to do. We didn’t know his name or personality yet, but we would soon.

  Zephyr helped.

Come out, son. It is time to join your clan.

Maddox cried out. The first shift was always painful, and even more so for alphas. Our bodies fought the shift more.

Zephyr and I released our pheromones to help him deal with the pain, but that was the most we could do.

  It is time.

Maddox’s dragon listened to Zephyr because, with a cry of pain, Maddox began his shift. His bones popped and elongated as his skin changed from soft and pale to gray, then black, and hard. It took several minutes, but finally, a large, black dragon stood in front of us, the snow around him a great backdrop for his beautiful color.

I shifted, my transformation taking seconds, and let Zephyr inspect his offspring. He was shinier than Zeph, but that was common with younger dragons. We were all black but had shades of the rainbow in our scales when they hit the light just right.

  Hello, father.

Son. I am proud to meet you, finally. What are you called?

Only Maddox and I could hear this, deep inside the bodies of our dragons.

  My name is Artemis.

After I helped him shift back, my grandfather and father waited with robes to wrap us in, then the entire family descended on us. Our cousins had come with Grandfather to see the shift.

Mom, Ava, and some of our female cousins and the wives of the dragons had put together a feast for us. After everyone had congratulated Maddox, we moved to the front yard where we’d erected tents and had a bonfire ready to light. It was tradition that the newly shifted dragon would light it in his human form. Symbolic. We’d stick close to the fire for warmth, or at least the humans would. Too bad this happened during the middle of winter, but what could we do?

As we filled up our plates, the sound of an approaching car filled the air.

I stiffened, not recognizing the engine’s rumble. I knew all the cars of the family by sound and smell.

When I heard the quickened female heartbeat, I relaxed. We’d have to be careful what we said, and Maddox and I would need to go dress before she questioned why we were in robes, but at least I knew who she was.

Ava’s best friend Charlotte pulled to a stop in a flurry of snow not far from the tents. When she emerged from the car, Ava gasped. Charlotte had a black eye and split lip.

Ava ran over to her friend. “Sorry to interrupt,” Charlotte said to us all. She ducked her head, obviously embarrassed, but I noticed her eyes darting around, taking it all in. “I really hoped you were up here and that this was the right road.” Ava must’ve told her we lived up the road from her at some point.

More privately, she whispered to Ava, but of course, we all had excellent hearing and heard every word. “I finally left him,” she whispered, before bursting into tears and collapsing into Ava’s arms.

Axel dropped his plate onto the table beside me, where we’d been standing filling them from the bounty. His body stiffened, and I heard his breath catch in his throat. My jaw dropped as I watched his nostrils flare. What was he doing?

“Mine,” he growled as he sucked in the scent of the newcomer. He growled until both Ava and Charlotte heard him.

Ava looked from Charlotte to Axel and back. “Uh-oh.”

Charlotte looked emotional and bewildered with wide eyes and a vulnerable pout to her lip. “What did he say?”

Ava shot me a severe look, spurring me into action. I threw my arms around my brother. “He said welcome!”

Axel continued to growl low in his throat as Ava turned Charlotte toward her car. “Come on, honey, you can officially meet the family when you’ve calmed down and had a rest.”

My arms tightened around my brother as he fought to go with them.

Ava almost had Charlotte to the car when Charlotte’s knees buckled. They both nearly hit the ground, but Ava managed to keep them upright.

Axel jerked out of my grip and scooped Charlotte up into his arms before anyone else could react. I moved right behind him and put a supporting hand on Ava’s back, not that she needed it.

Charlotte was passed out, her head lolling back, in Axel’s arms.

  “Get her inside,” Ava ordered.

As I watched my brother stalk inside with the blonde bombshell, I pushed back my delight. She was injured, grievously so.

But my brother was about to be in for a whirlwind, and I couldn’t wait to watch.
