Staring down at the glittering diamond, I steady myself with a breath and a prayer.
“Now I’m hungry,” Monica says.
My body turns and the world slows. I gaze at the woman I love—the woman I never expected—and I feel the words bursting to get out of me.
“Monica,” I start.
She smiles and pushes a hand through her blonde hair. “What? I can’t help it, you stole all my energy. I need carbs,” she giggles. I snort a laugh and shake my head. I love her but sometimes she’s utterly clueless.
“Yeah, tell you what, let me talk to you for a second and I’ll take you anywhere you want to eat.”
Her eyes light up and she lifts her brows wearing tight lips allowing me to proceed. I take a seat on the edge of the bed and stare at my knees as they bounce.
“You know I fell in love with you over a week? A week. I didn’t know that was possible.” I turn to catch her gaze and she’s softened, her perfect lips parted as she listens. “You know I love you. You know I love your kids. You know I love your crazy family and your needy friends and your unfortunate taste in movies. I love this gorgeous body.” I bite my lip and shake my head giving her a slow once-over. She rolls her eyes but blushes too. She likes the way I ogle her, I know it.
“There’s kinda just one thing missing right?”
Monica swallows hard and scrutinizes me while I fidget, squeezing the ring in my palm before opening my hand to reveal it to her. Her sharp intake of air makes my chest pulse. It’s not until our eyes meet—hers watery and bright—that relief floods me.
“Oh, Logan,” she whispers.
“Will you marry me, sweetheart?”
She sits up straighter and takes the ring from my palm staring at it wide-eyed. She turns it in her hands, viewing it closely, watching with delight as it sparkles in the afternoon sun pouring in our window. My heartbeat slows. A grin pulls at her mouth. Monica slides the ring onto her finger then holds my stare. Her other hand raises in the air and closes into a fist. Without taking her eyes off me, Monica knocks on the wall behind her two times then beams.
“It’s twice for yes, right?”
I nod, unable to contain the joy I feel and launch myself at her, devouring her mouth with mine. Settled against her body, kissing her lips, my ring on her finger, her scent on my skin, we are exactly where we are supposed to be. Home.
