  Chapter 284. The Lost Sheep

H is descent was anything but pleasant, but still, it was better than a climb. The colossal chute crafted by unknown magic was, according to Raven’s initial guess, sloping gently, with the angle remaining unchanged over its entire length.

He had time to consider lots of things on this journey. Was it worth it? What — or whom — would he find down there? And how, for system’s sake, was anyone supposed to find this location without a hint? Such a feat seemed nothing short of impossible.

But what he wondered the most was:

Is this really worth all the trouble I’ve been through?

Surrounded by darkness, he moved on like a traveler losing their way in dark, misty woods, with no option of coming back. He could only get out of this by killing himself.

After ten hours of moving steadily in complete darkness, he felt a shiver. It was his body warning him about the danger that lurked beneath. And then he heard it.

  A groan.

A drawn-out wail that struck primal fear into his heart. Who — or what — could be strong enough to make him shiver all over? Reflexively, he tried to slow down his descent by gripping the wall with both hands, but then collected himself and clenched his fists, preparing for the encounter with the mysterious monster.

  BOOM!

  - 327 HP

At some point, his body lost touch with the tunnel walls, and he slammed into the ground at full speed.

Congratulations! You have discovered a new location.

  +25 Influence Points

+3 sec duration of Foxy Grip, Hard Labor, and Scathing Blow for the next 5 hours

+4% chance of finding a Niarako Petal

These have to be the most useless bonuses that I’ve ever got. After closing the message, he activated his Light scroll — and immediately regretted it.

He had seen all sorts of things in the real world, and even more here, in Ascension. But still, he leaped away in fear at seeing a half-rotten giant standing six feet away from him — or rather, the giant’s wide open, toothy maw.

He couldn’t believe his eyes. The thing in front of him was a Gaharadja. One of the titans once summoned by the heroes’ descendants that made this world the way it was today.

The monster’s upper body was hanging upside-down from the ceiling. Its lower half, up to the waist, was hidden in the stone. The giant looked like an integral part of its surroundings; its body was covered with moss and lichen, and some small, spider-like creatures had made a nest in its mouth ages ago.

The last (or one of the last) piece of the jigsaw fell into its place. The hole must’ve been created by the portal that pulled this giant human-eater in. For some reason, it had become an eternal trap for this poor sucker who never made it back home.

  Name: Jajakrakhadj

  Level: ???

  HP: ???

Identification was useless, but once Raven applied it, he got a new quest message.

Attention! You have been offered a unique quest: The Lost Sheep

Description: Lone and abandoned. Once, the very sound of his name struck terror into the hearts of puny mortals. But now, he’s stuck here in the dark, for the delectation of the servants of Fate.

Find a way to kill this giant who has not been returned to the Forgotten Shores.

  Reward:

  +2,000 gold

  +3,000,000 XP

  +1 random class item (epic)

+1 random item (Gold rank or higher)

  Accept: Yes/No?

Raven swept the message away as the dwellers of the giant’s mouth were coming at him, infuriated by his appearance in a flash of light. Luckily, their levels were far lower than Jajakrakhadj’s.

Summoning his pets, Raven quickly destroyed the Jaw Vermin (as the system marked the little buggers). As he finished reading the quest’s description, he sighed and closed his eyes.

It had been ages since he had last got even a single copper coin as a quest reward, let alone gold. He had almost forgotten how it felt to toil day and night for two dozen coins. These days, he took more interest in XP than in gold.

Having closed the menu, and staying clear of the half-dead Jajakrakhadj, he remembered seeing a similar mob once, encountered by Pak and his clan. The Grave Lady, if that was her name, was a mess of bodies that got stuck together. They had only completed that quest by using a hero’s item.

  Well... Looks like I’m fucked.

The situation was... not good, to say the least. He no longer had access to Floor Three, and even if he had, the chance of luring Dullakhan up here was close to zero. He could’ve still tried to take the artifact from him by force. Or by persuasion. But neither of those suited him.

“Who am I trying to deceive?” He sighed and walked over to the wall. Leaning his back against it, he sat down, staring at the barely alive giant, occasionally shivering from the aura oozed by the monster. “There’s no way to that Floor.”

The idea of waiting for any player to reach his Floor was even more unpleasant than the twitching muscles and shivers. How the hell am I supposed to kill this thing? Raven thought and shook his gloomy mood off. There had to be a way. He believed there was. Ascension was a game that always offered you a chance, although, sometimes, it was tricky to find. Fucking huge world, with a fuckton of Floors and hidden sub-worlds.

Tossing his head back so that it touched the cold wall, he pondered, his mood rotten. He could toss his idea of quickly leveling up into the bin.

Pull yourself together, Will. He frowned, reading the quest message once again carefully. Hold on... That’s it!

The task was much simpler than it seemed. Unlike with the Soul Crushers quest, this time around, he didn’t have to rescue the monster; just to kill it.

Raven stood up. Knowing better than to approach the giant, he sent ahead his strongest pet — Shimiraz — and followed him.

His order to attack was completed immediately. One strike of the Ogre’s club gave him enough information to make a plan. The first important thing was that the monster could feel pain. The second was that it was infuriated by pain, judging by the fact that it was roaring so loudly and shaking the small dungeon so vigorously that it was on the verge of collapsing, threatening to bury all of them in the debris. The third — and perhaps the most important — thing was a sudden recollection, woken up by the giant’s deafening roar.

  The Stone of Life.

Could this monster be still alive not because it was stuck in
time and space, but because it had devoured a million souls and created such a stone for itself?

This idea gave Raven an adrenaline rush.

  If I’m right...

Raven stretched his arms and shoulders, bracing himself for a long battle, then took out all potions that could be of any help from his inventory and gulped them all down one by one. He then rolled the Dice, not really caring which attribute they’d increase. Any was fine.

Having taken one slow step, he dashed forward, commanding Shimiraz to repeatedly strike the same spot on the giant’s body. The Ogre obeyed, hammering his club into the skull of the roaring Jajakrakhadj.

The monster’s screams made the ground quake and Raven’s ear bleed as all sorts of debuffs kept raining upon him. As strong a defense as he had, it was still not enough to shield him from the roar’s effects. Still, it was his attention that suffered the most. The only thing he had to do was to avoid the giant’s snapping jaws and keep attacking.

  ***

  Strike. Strike.

After six hours of constant attacks, the problem of Jajakrakhadj’s unknown HP was solved. The giant was bleeding. Pieces of his head and brains were scattered about the cave. But there was no message about its death. No progress on the task.

That was when Raven realized that the giant couldn’t be killed because it did indeed possess a Stone of Life.

As the rogue came to terms with this, he was about to drop the quest and go grind while he still had time for it, but... He wasn’t the sort that gave up.

Stepping on the broken pieces of the giant’s skull scattered among the morsels of his brain, Raven stopped right beneath the giant’s spine and, dismissing his pets, Double Jump-ed to the ceiling.

  Without Barriers.

As he clung to the giant’s neck, he used Through a Wall to begin sinking into the monster’s flesh, determined to find the stone even if he’d have to explore every inch of the titan’s body.

  ***

During the skill’s four-hour-long cooldown, he had to leave the game to get some sleep, after which he’d return, and then leave again to rest. He proceeded slowly, step by step, taking breaks whenever he needed.

One day passed, then two, then three.

Rotten blood and flesh were filling his throat and lungs, suffocating him. His skill protected him from that while it was active, but the moments of leaving and re-entering the game were beyond obnoxious. Feeling like a cannibal, he’d take a big gulp of fresh air every time he left the capsule, scaring his father.

Moving around blindly in search of an item he had never seen was beyond difficult and frustrating. He felt like a man lost in a rapid river, struggling to reach either bank as the current tossed him about.

  Aimlessly.

  Purposelessly.

Time was slipping through his fingers. He struggled to fall asleep when he was out of the game. Less than twenty hours remained before Farris broke free. So little. He wished he could get back those six months.

He paced up and down his room. He couldn’t eat. All he could stomach were snacks flavored by agonizing wait and disturbing thoughts of failure.

Come on! How much more do I need to wait?

He checked the time. Thirty minutes before the cooldown would end. He wished he had another blocker to use on Through a Wall. These cooldown breaks were literally killing him.

  The alarm clock rang.

Will dove into the game. Once inside, he held his breath and silently activated his skill.

  Slow. Too slow.

  Where the hell is it?!

Making his way through another part of the giant’s body, he couldn’t tell whether he had been there before. Everything looked the same — fleshy and slimy.

Golden Dragon was useless here, and he had no other skills that could assist him with this search.

He hated despair. Hated being weak. Hated wallowing in doubt and self-pity. He drove these feelings as deep inside himself as he could when Leah was born. He wanted his sister to believe that her brother could deal with absolutely anything. But now... Now he wasn’t so sure if he could do it.

If only he had something that could speed up his...

  Holy shit! I’m an idiot!

He cursed himself for wasting so much time. He could use Nirvana! Then again, who would’ve thought that you could use that while you were neck-deep in guts?

Once Through a Wall ended, he activated Nirvana. True to its name, the skill brought him bliss. Soon, he discovered what he was looking for. It had been in front of his nose the entire time but he, blindly hacking away, kept moving in circles.

The Stone of Life wasn’t really a stone, but it couldn’t be mistaken for anything else.

A sphere the size of a basketball, emitting a pure, steady glow of light yellow hovered in front of him. Flashing all over its surface were the faces of the giant’s victims.

These must be the devoured souls. If the dark hero told me the truth...

Unfortunately, he couldn’t make sure immediately. As he left the capsule, he finally found it in him to eat a proper meal and lie down for a couple of hours. This time, worry-free.

Four hours later, he was back in the game. The Stone was finally his.

  Congratulations!

  Attention!

A torrent of messages flooded his inbox, but he couldn’t read them right away.

Nirvana. Leap. Holding his breath for a minute and forty seconds...

Shit. Hold it! Hold it, you motherfucker! Air. Just a gulp of air.

  Leap.

Gasping for air, he fell out of the giant’s body and sprawled on the ground. He raised the hand holding the sphere, coughing and laughing out loud at the same time.

The only thing left to do was to give this piece of shit to Zal’Sscar.

Raven couldn’t believe what he was reading. It was much like seeing Pandora’s Box’s description for the first time. All of his emotions were prominent on his face. There was no reason to try to hide them here, but he doubted he could’ve done that even if Farris had been standing by his side.
