'You know it!'
But she was shaking her head, too anxious to have it clear just how he felt to take anything for granted. 'I don't know anything except—except how / feel,' she said, and Dimitri took her face between his hands and looked down into her eyes.
There was passion there, but something else too. A warm, tender look that she had never seen before and which aroused such responses in her she wanted to reach up and draw that dark head down to her breast. She loved him and she no longer made any attempt to hide it from him; if he did not feel as she did then it was all over and she would go back to England, even though she left a part of herself there with him.
One arm encircled her waist again and the other hand reached up to wind *"rands of tangled, silky fair hair around his fingers. 'I did not know how you felt until Minerva came home,' he told her in that deep, quietly affecting voice. 'When I heard her out there in the hall, and you so obviously knew something about her being there, I knew—I hoped that you had gone to so much effort because you knew how I felt. You knew how much it hurt me that she had run away, and I remembered the look in your eyes that morning.' He pressed a strand of hair to his lips and looked deep into her eyes. 'Am I wrong, my love?'
How could she deny it? Carey shook her head, her grey eyes soft and shining and she smiled. 'Y/ou looked so hurt,' she whispered. 'I didn't realise you were so—vulnerable, and I already loved you; what else could I do except try and persuade Minerva to come home?'
'Carey.' He said it softly and the cadence he gave her name was like music. 'Carey, I have loved you for so long now it seems I must have begun to love you the moment you walked into my life. I think Nikolas will be pleased that we are to be married, for now he will know you will not be leaving him, ever.'
'You're going to marry me?' Her eyes laughed at him, teasing him for his arrogant assumption that she would marry him.
'You think me too proud?' Dimitri demanded, and the hand in her hair grasped tightly suddenly so that she objected, laughing as she tried to free herself. 'Did I not
tell you, kopila^ that the Karamalis have a different kind of pride?'
She was drawn into his arms again and held with a fiercely possessive force that threatened to crush her ribs, and his mouth when it took hers had the same bruising hardness in the first few moments. Then she put her arms up around his neck and stroked her fingers where the black hair grew thickest at the back of his head, and his kiss gentled to a less brutal force.
With his mouth against her neck he whispered softly in his own tongue and when he at last lifted his head again, his eyes looked down at her with a glowing darkness that lifted her heart. 'Stay with me, my little love/ he murmured. 'Marry me and I promise that you will never regret not going home.'
Gently, lovingly, Carey pulled his head down to her and whispered with her lips against his. 'Home is where the heart is,' she reminded him. 'So I must stay here where you are, my love.'
'Oh, blessed Artemis,' Dimitri murmured, as if the ancient goddess had indeed answered his prayer, and drew her into his arms again.

A WORD ABOUT THE AUTHOR
When British-born and -bred Rebecca Stratton left school, she began a series of jobs that included everything—from punch-card operator to machinist in a suspender factory! But for her, there was only one real goal: someday she was going to be a professional writer.
And at long last, when she was forty-five, she left a safe and secure job to devote all her time to writing. Her first book, a romantic novel, was sent off to a publisher, and while waiting for a reply she completed two more manuscripts. Then came the joyous news: her first novel, The Golden Madonna (Romance #1748) had been accepted. She was on her way!
For Rebecca Stratton, a writing career means interviews by the local papers and speaking engagements before local clubs. But most of all, and best of all, it means settling down to the real nitty gritty: plain hard work.
