The Planet Strappers

Raymond Z. Gallun

Armchair fiction presents extra large paperback editions of the best in classic science fiction novels. “The Planet Strappers,” written by Raymond Z. Gallun, is a fine tale about the wilds of outer space. They started out as “The Bunch,” a group of student-astronauts in the back room of a store in Jarviston, Minnesota. They wanted off Earth, and they begged, borrowed, and built what they needed to make it all happen. “The Planet Strappers” got what they wanted—a start on the road to the stars. But no one brought up on Earth could have imagined what was waiting for them out there…out there in the blackness of outer space. In “The Planet Strappers,” Rayond Z. Gallun has written a story of the Day After Tomorrow—a story of what it will be like for the men who cross the space frontier. A story that some of us will be living…someday.

All space was electrified as that harsh challenge rang out . . . but John Endlich hesitated. For he saw beyond his own murder -- saw the horror and destruction his death would unleash -- and knew he dared not fight back! The space ship landed briefly, and John Endlich lifted the huge Asteroids Homesteaders Office box, which contained everything from a prefabricated house to toothbrushes for his family, down from the hold-port without help or visible effort. In the tiny gravity of the asteroid, Vesta, doing this was no trouble at all. But beyond this point the situation was -- bitter.

The Revolt of the Star Men

The Revolt of the Star Men

The creatures that people this exciting story of Mr. Gallun, may seem at first blush to be impossible monstrosities. Yet, on consideration, we must realize that they are not so far-fetched. Even in our picayune little corner of the universe, we find in the insect kingdom a form of life that has survived through every possible earth catastrophe in the last 40,000,000 years. With their skeletons on the outside of their bodies instead of on the inside, insects are able to protect their bodies from heat, cold, and from accidents that would kill us. If the insect\'s shell were harder and thicker and made of heat-resisting material, it might conceivably be able to live in space without other protection. The point is that Mr. Gallun makes his Space Men so convincing that we can do nothing but believe in them. And he has woven about them such a thrilling story of adventure on two worlds that one will have to read and reread it, to get from it the fullest enjoyment.
