It was a completion I’d never experienced before, being with someone I loved. I’d thought I’d loved Ron before and had gotten burned. But now, the fire was purifying, exact, perfect. I couldn’t have imagined anything better, and I howled my completion at the ceiling, not caring which of my neighbors heard me, wishing I could tell the entire world just how good I felt with the man beneath me.

I cracked open my eyes, saw Marcus’ smile, and felt my heart clench at the sight of him, so close, finally so close to me.

  “You…you didn’t come,” I panted, almost accusatory.

“We have all night,” he said, smiling. “I wanted to watch you. We have all night and the rest of our lives.”

It was good to catch up—delicious, in fact—and our breathing mirrored the sounds of the surf beyond my windows, relentless in its moving, in and out, pounding. There was no position we didn’t try, no pleasure we didn’t eke out of each other. Marcus’ face was so incredible when he finally lost the sweet battle, finally gave himself over to pleasure, the lines fading and reforming, his lips pursed, his hands gripping my own.

We didn’t sleep at all, didn’t pause, and didn’t stop touching each other until the air around us lightened from black to gray, signaling dawn’s approach.

We showered together, washing each other tenderly, as if each part was our own body.

There was no Parker or Marcus anymore. It was finally, sublimely us. Just us.

We watched the colors change over the waves on the horizon. I was so tired I was afraid of fainting—and yet more invigorated than I’d ever felt. The sun eased up over the edge of the sea, and I sighed suddenly.

“Has it all been worth it?” I asked, the sunrise lighting the ocean below us ablaze. The light cast everything in an otherworldly glow, and standing in my home with Marcus’ arm over my shoulder almost didn’t feel real.

He kissed the top of my head, his lips lingering over my hair. “What do you mean?”

“We waited nearly our entire lives for this moment,” I said, sweeping my hand out in front of me. A new day was dawning, and part of me was frightened. Would our feelings change for each other now that we’d decided to be together? Could we really push past all those years apart?

But the other part of me was the one that felt more alive now than I ever had, just because I was watching a sunrise with the man I loved more than anything else in the world standing right beside me. I’d watched many a sunrise from this very window, but none of them had been as meaningful as this one, the day when everything had finally fallen into place. The day I’d been unwittingly waiting for my entire life.

“Parker, this is only the beginning,” Marcus said, kissing me until the sun hovered fully over the horizon, the first of many days to come.
