  As Pemberton remained at his side, he ceased to whisper to the priest who then uttered the words of absolution as he made the sign of the cross. Then the youngster’s battered head turned to one side as his tortured body visibly relaxed. It looked as if he had suddenly fallen asleep. While his little car burned like an inferno in the ditch, the man’s life came to a quick and peaceful end. Quite suddenly, it was all over. With blue light flashing and siren sounding, an ambulance arrived and Lorraine guided the driver towards the casualty.

  ‘He’s gone,’ said the priest. ‘May the Lord have mercy on his soul.’
