Biting my lip, I can’t help but smile at him. Since our first time in the office, when he crossed the line with me, I’ve been head-over-heels for Jack. This summer our connection has only deepened.
My grandmother used to say after a couple of glasses of Chardonnay that you can’t have a good relationship without great sex. But she also said that great sex in itself doesn’t mean a relationship will have a good foundation.
It’s odd how connected I’ve come to feel to Jack. He scares me and gives me butterflies every time I’m with him, yet at the same time I trust him with all my heart. Our shared stories of loss brought us closer together than I’d ever thought possible.
“What are you smiling at, April?”
Goosebumps roll through me. I love it when he uses my auction name.
“Just you. That okay?”
Putting his suitcoat on, he locks his eyes on me, then reaches into his inside pocket. In one smooth motion, he pulls out a small box, takes one knee in front of me, and pops it open.
“Stacy,” he starts, his voice low and gravelly. I blink a few times and cover my mouth, my entire body tingling with emotion. “I knew the moment I laid eyes on you at work that I wanted you. I didn’t know exactly why. But now I do. You were sent to heal me. I was sent to take care of you. For a long time, I didn’t think anything happened for a reason. Now, I do. And the reason is staring me right in the face. The reason is you. Will you marry me?”
“Yes. Yes!”
A broad grin spreads across his entire face, and he stands up, kisses and hugs me. “I fucking love you, Stacy. I love you as Stacy, and April, and I want both of you in my life forever.”
“I fucking love you too, Mr. H.,” I whisper while he holds me tight.
