Chapter 32
Becektt
Shit, shit, shit! Astrid convulsed in my arms as her magic flooded the room. I placed my hands under her legs and back and lifted her up.
Maze rushed to my side. “Put her on the table. She’s ascending!”
I shook my head. “No, we’re not ready. We’re supposed to do this with the queens!”
Cross threw his hands out and his burgundy magic surrounded her golden power, containing it. Sweat broke out over his forehead. “Little help here.”
Logan stood across from him and forced his orange smoke to join with Cross’s. “Beckett, do something or she’d going to blow the roof off this house.”
The ground quaked. Plates and glasses fell from the shelves onto the floor, smashing to pieces. The house groaned with the pressure. I held her pressed to my chest while her eyes rolled back into her head and she continued to shake.
Maze joined in with the others and his green smoke mixed in. “Get out now, Beck! She needs to ascend!”
I laid her on the island and forced myself to step back. I unleashed my magic, willing it to help hold hers in. I felt her power pressing against our barrier, so much power it was like a bomb about to go off. Pressure continued to build in the sphere of her own power. All at once her body stopped quaking and she fell lifeless on the table. Her chest barely rose and fell with her breaths. Oh God, she’s dying. Her power was too much, way too much!
Cross yelled at me from the other side of the sphere. “We need Zinn!”
I shook my head. I didn’t want to leave her, couldn’t leave her. She needed me here with her!
Maze wrapped his hand in my shirt and yanked me back from the sphere. “If you don’t go get her now, she will die. I’ve seen it.”
The breath left my body and I staggered back. He saw her death? Oh hell no, not on my watch. Resolved, I threw my portal right there in the kitchen and dove through. My mind was a mess of concern as I twisted and turned until I sprinted out of it.
There in the middle of the witch court throne room sat my queen and the only hope I had of saving my girl. Her crown was perched on her head and those wild midnight locks fell down the sides of her face. She arched her eyebrow at me. I needed her power. I needed her to save Astrid.
My breath hitched and I felt my throat close around the words. “Oh God, please help me . . . she’s dying.”
Zinnia jumped to her feet. “I’m coming.”

This power chose me…
Within the supernatural world of Evermore everyone prays their child will be born with the Mark of the Guardian for they have unparalleled strength, intelligence, and power…but they have no idea what it’s actually like. I didn’t wish for this gift and I definitely don’t want it. I was born a prince, I already had it all. This Mark on my neck stole all of it from me and forced me into a dangerous life I’d gladly trade away if I could…
But now the Witch Queens have ascended and it’s time to try and defeat the evil King once and for all. For over a thousand years his cruelty has spared no one as his torturous power grows stronger. He must be stopped now, before his reign destroys everything and anything in his way. So I must push aside my dreams of returning home to the family that cast me out. I must step up and claim the power that chose me. I must enter the Trials and become a Knight in the Witch’s Court.
There’s only one way to prevent the tyrannical king from destroying everything I love…I must become the one thing he can’t beat.
. . .You fell . . .I’ve seen you walk!
