The inspiration for Alfie came from Esther Woolfson’s book Corvus, the true story of living for more than twenty-five years with a rook (named Chicken) that her daughter brought home as a fledgling. It is a lovely tale of getting close to a different species and our perceptions of intelligence and companionship. In writing my piece of fiction and creating Alfie, maybe I stretched a rook’s abilities—and then again, maybe I didn’t.
