1 Prologue
Emerald was just eleven when she attended the future Alpha's birthday party. She remembers climbing a tree with the other pack kid and watching the girls sixteen years and over surrounding Felix. Never would she have guessed that in five years, on her birthday her wolf spirit would be seeking him. It was normal for every unmated wolf to attend birthday parties hoping to find their mates. The females had a better chance of finding her mate on her sixteenth birthday than a male. Males tend to be older than their mates. Felix had no luck on his sweet sixteen but he did meet Laura who was nine days older than him. She was the daughter of the Alpha Hayden Greene of the Greene Woods pack. A beautiful female who captured everyone's attention by simply smiling.
Emerald was one of the children, who took part in the welcoming ceremony for one of the many alphas’ daughters attending that day. Alpha Richard, Felix's father went all out to welcome each of the females who were potentially Felix's mate. It was a traditional welcoming meant to symbolize how his mate would be celebrated in the pack. Emerald gave Laura a red rose and a gift box, then held her hands firmly until Felix came along. He playfully tugged her ponytail saying "How's about you go play with the other kids and I'll hold on to Laura for a while."
Those were the only words Felix would speak to Emerald until her sixteenth birthday. Laura looked at Emerald then gave her the necklace she was wearing, a simple gold chain with an emerald shaped like a heart.
"It would keep you happy until you meet your mate." Laura said to her.
Emerald would wear this necklace every day until her own sixteenth birthday when life's cruel truths came crashing at her.
The next year when Emerald was twelve, she attended another party and saw Felix with Laura hand in hand. They were the talk of the pack. The future alpha of the Black Mountain pack and the daughter of the alpha of the Greene woods pack were openly dating each other even though they were not mates.
Felix and Laura ignored the pack's gossip. The two stuck together and become inseparable. At age fourteen, Emerald, at her older sister birthday party, remembers there was a lot of tension in the pack as parents started to complain about their soon to be appointed Alpha Felix had started living with Laura. The pack felt it was disrespectful for an alpha to live with a woman who wasn't his mate or Luna. That day Laura showed the pack where her loyalties laid. She met and rejected her mate, an ordinary male with no rank or status. Finally, she thought the pack would accept her.
There was no surprise the following year Alpha Felix Black announced his engagement to Laura at his twentieth birthday party. He decided he would mark her and break the bond with his unknown mate. He went as far as to the council to legalize this rejection. Laura's brother, John, the new alpha to the Greene Woods pack had agreed and gave his consent, on the condition she completed the last year of her school.
When Felix was born, the pack, the council and kings all knew he was blessed by the goddess. His aura was powerful long before he shifted. His only flaw was his inability to wait for his mate. He kept his reasons to himself. Not even Laura knew but she cared not, as long as Felix was hers.
To Felix, Laura wasn't meant to be more than a fling. He didn't plan to fall in love with her. Love was also a bond, just as strong as the mate pull. A bond he had been yearning for, for years. A bond he chose to create. This bond was real and here now, unlike his destined mate. He chose Laura only after years of waiting. He loved the woman who rejected her mate for him and was now carrying his child. He planned for years to refuse the mate born to be his because he didn't believe he could love anyone as much as he loved Laura.
Laura wasn't always accepted by the pack. In fact, she was hated by most. Though she was godly beautiful, she was known as a mate thief. A woman without morals. It took years for her to earn her place. Laura had to prove herself over and over to a pack with members dead set on looking down on her. Even then, she still continued at trying to establish herself as the acting Luna to the Black Mountain pack. Until Felix officially rejected his mate, Laura would not be the pack's Luna. A fact many elders reminded her off. Though she was liked among the younger generation, the older folks still had their doubts. Laura decided having Felix's child would help her position.
Sadly, Laura's father and brothers became estranged to her during the past year. Initially her father, Hayden Greene encouraged her to chase after Felix. He openly approved her decision to reject her mate for the alpha to be. However, in the last year Hayden would come to regret that choice creating a drift between him and his daughter. Laura had many layers to her. Her love for Felix was everything to her.
Nate was on the final months of his internship. He was born with the strength and healing abilities which were inherited from his werewolf father. His mother was human and Nate took after her. Because he was not able to shift into a wolf, he was termed 'just a human'. The pack did recognise him as a member. His intelligence was unmatched by any other, making him the expert in everything werewolf related.

I woke up very early, long before my alarm went off. The anxiousness for my birthday party which was a day away had me up before dawn. It was not because I'd be meeting my mate if he were nearby; but because I wanted permission to leave this pack. My plan was to study nursing, but this could only happen if I either found my mate then he allowed me to leave; or I didn't find him and was given special permission to exit the pack temporarily to find him. Either way I planned to leave. Pack life was a limitation. I wanted to live! To travel and see the world. A mate would only complicate me.
My parents had almost kept my sister and I caged up all our lives. Almost as if they were hiding us from the outside. My sister Ruby, was lucky to find her mate the day she turned sixteen. That luck only got her out of my parents’ house. Leaving didn't mean living. Ruby left only continued the cycle my parents groomed her for.
I got off my bed then walked down the stairs to the kitchen, grabbed a bag of cookies and sat in the living room eating away. My dad who was a part of the pack’s security team, patrolling last night would be walking into the house anytime now. My mom, Linda, came out of the kitchen to join me. For as long as I could remember, mom would wait for her dad with a cup of coffee and a sandwich. The perfect little wolf wife, my eyes rolled just looking at her.
"Hey Emmy, why you up so early?" She asked.
"Can't sleep ma." I responded.
"Bet you're excited about your birthday party" she said.
"I'm more nervous about getting permission to leave. What if I find my mate and he refuses to let me study mom, I think it would kill me." I sighed.
Mate bonds were a chain connecting a pair unnecessarily. Freedom was taken away upon finding a mate, worst off all was your wolf spirit made you think you were in love. Strangers being instantly in love was ridiculous. "He will love you and do whatever it takes to make you happy. Don't worry. Plus, honey, you could study at the community hospital" As mom said those words dad walked into the house. I was glad to see him, as he saved me from the 'I need to get out of here' argument with mom.
"Morning my beauties" he cheerfully greeted us. He kissed my mom then kissed my forehead. My dad had always been an affectionate person.
"So, I found out Laura is pregnant!" dad blurted out as he took his coffee from mom.
"Really?" I screamed at dad "How do you know?" I loved hearing the gossip, it made our dull pack life, exciting.
Ever since our alpha got engaged to Laura it was the talk of the town. Our gated community consisted of both werewolves and humans who knew the truth of our existence. Most of the humans who lived here were either children of human and werewolf relationships, who were born without the gene or relatives of humans married to werewolves in the community. And while humans and werewolves got married often, it was not at all uncommon for a werewolf and a she-wolf who weren't mates to decide to abandon their mates for each other. Love was a bond no one could control.
"I had to escort her to the hospital, she had a dizzy spell caused by the pregnancy. Would you believe she's showing already?” My dad said like a school girl.
I held the heart pendant she gave me all those years ago and remembered the day I met her. She was such a beautiful girl I thought. I had very few interactions with her after meeting her which meant my opinion of her came from the one time.
"She will be a good Luna." I said out loud.
Dad looked at me and said "He hasn't marked her, now he can't until the pup is safely out"
"Really? Why?" I asked dad. It didn't seem like a thing, why would he have to wait for the baby to be out of her? Was his venom deadly to unborn babies? The science lover in me wanted to ask so many questions.
"Well, I think he tried marking her the night their got engaged, but because he hasn't met his true mate, the mark wouldn't hold. He has to officially meet and reject his true mate, something about not producing marking venom until he meets his mate. That's what that human expert said." I was pretty sure dad was referring to the intern Nate when he said expert; the human with all the knowledge on wolves.
"Oh really?" I said surprised to my dad. I really didn't know there were so many rules to this mate bond thing. I really didn't care for a mate or the bond. I just wanted to get out and as far away from this commu
I envied Laura for the opportunity she was given by her dad, the previous alpha of her pack. She was allowed to leave her pack to study but she instead chose to come to our pack and live with Alpha Felix. I truly believed she was stupid for her decision; how could she live her life around a man? Especially since she had met her true mate at age nineteen, at my sister’s sixteenth birthday party then rejected him. Even more crazy, her mate accepted being refused by her without resistance. He was an omega from another pack who was considered too low in rank by her father, oh so I was told. A foolish reason since the omega climbed the ranks afterwards. Refusing him made her choice to move to our pack easier, I guess. To me this made her stupid as she gave up freedom for a man who wasn't even hers.
I held the pendant she gave me and smiled. Little did I know this woman would be the cause of my misery in just a few short days.
2 Awakened

I was so busy getting my dress in order for my birthday that I didn't realize the time. Because I spent too much time at the Boutique, I was now running late for my volunteer work at the community hospital. I grabbed my dress from the store and ran the entire way to the General Hospital. I continued running all the way up to the staff lounge where I could leave my dress. I was so late I didn't even put on my uniform.
I couldn't afford to lose any hours on my volunteer sheet if I wanted my collage application to look good. I had no choice but to run to my post. Naturally, I bumped into one of the interns, Nate.
"Slow down! Why are you running in here? Are you purposely trying to add more patients to the A&E?" He scolded at me.
"Oh my god Nate I'm so sorry! I'm just so late for my shift and tomorrow is my birthday and I just well..." he cut me off.
"Just slow down." And with that he walked away. Nate was a human intern and expert in all things werewolf related. His mother was married to a wolf, but he was born without the gene. He chose to learn medicine and stay here in our stupid community hospital, which for the love of me I had no idea why. He was probably about twenty-three, eye candy! But then most men in our pack looked like they walked out of a fashion magazine.
Shaking him off, I continued in my path. I needed to get my volunteer time clocked in. This day however, I didn't have to put real effort into. After about fifteen minutes, the floor coordinator told me I can go home and he'd still mark my time sheet present for two hours volunteered service as a birthday gift. Perfect! My first and already favourite gift.
As I walked out, I saw a crowd at the clinic front. I walked towards the area and felt lightheaded which passed just as soon as it came. From the distance I saw Laura, our acting Luna. She was glowing. Her eyes locked on mine and I held my heart pendant she waved at me and I smiled. I couldn't believe she remembered me. She was wearing the matching earrings to my pendant and I felt a small connection to her. So many years since she gave me my favourite necklace, I thought to myself. I saw alpha Felix walk up to her and kissed her cheek lovingly. Everyone there saw the happiness they shared.
"Why are you still here?" A voice behind me said. It was Nate "I heard the hospital coordinator tell you leave." He said as he walked pass me a with a flirty smile and wink.
For the love of god I had no idea why I was blushing, but I didn't stay to find out. I took my stuff and then ran out. Running was all I did that day.
It was now the morning of my birthday. I was an adult by werewolf law but felt no different from yesterday. My first objective was to finish typing an official formal request to leave this pack for educational purposes or for searching for my mate purposes and every other purpose I could think off. Being prepared was second nature, which meant I had every reason covered for needing to leave.
My mom and older sister came into my room singing happy birthday, disturbing my application process. I was not impressed but I still smiled. How weird was I to hope I didn't find a mate just to get permission to leave? How crazy would it be to find said mate while studying? I didn't need that kind of negativity in my life so I stopped thinking all together for the rest of the day.
Everything was shaping up well. Guest started arriving yet no mate was sensed. I remained happy. The party was so far a great success since two other persons from other packs came and surprise, they found their mates. The community was rejoicing. Then the former alpha couple, Alpha Richard and his wife Luna Fiona, arrived with Laura. Politely I walked out to greet them as it was expected. Internally I smiled thinking this was my first adult meeting of leaders. I did my traditional bow which was the traditional form of respect welcoming them into my family home.
Laura looked beautiful and for some reason I felt uneasy around her. My wolf spirit was becoming aggressive.
"I'm sorry Felix will be by a bit later; he is busy with my brother at the moment but he does send his regards." She said softly. It was as if she could also sense my wolf spirit awakening with hostility.
"I'm so pleased that you made time to attend. And may I say congratulations." I said with a smile. I took the gift box from her and placed it on the table mom set aside for gifts. Mom was the type to insist I open gifts all at once rather than as I got them. It was silly but the way I was groomed.
In most packs, it was normal for the Alpha to attend all birthday parties to approve new mates especially if they came from different packs. My father invited all un-mated males in my age group, from a total of six packs. Also, a normal thing among my kind, to make sure as many possible mates came to meet the birthday girl simply to increase the odds of me finding my mate.
Laura raised her hand to my neck to hold my pendant as she smiled "I remember giving you this necklace the day we first met. It was the same day I met Felix."
I couldn't help but laugh "Yes he pulled my hair then sent me to play with the other kids!"
I remembered it so many time in the last few days, it was like the universe was telling me something. My mother then ushered them to the VIP section to be seated while I continued to mingle.
If all went well, my mate would remain in the shadows. I didn't need one. Hopefully I would shift soon. All week I already started feeling my wolf spirit. Soon I would be shifting officially becoming a member of the pack.
For days my mom had been monitoring me because she wanted me to shift in private as she insisted the first shift was painful, better to do it without eyes on you. Her over protective ways were nothing compared to my dad. If he could, he would lock me in a box.
That night, I was introduced to many males. Too many to count. All trying in vain to find a connection. This continued all evening. Most of the males, older of course, were becoming boarder line desperate to find their mate. Many males would often grow impatient while waiting resulting in them replacing their moon blessed mate. Alpha Felix and Laura were examples of this, though some would argue Laura pushed herself upon him.
The dinner was going so well until I felt it, the bond of a mate. His presence. My mate. I was anxious and sad at the same time. My wolf spirit had now fully awakened to his call.
In a panic, I ran upstairs hoping not to see him. A bad choice because my wolf spirit was forcing me back to the crowd. I searched the place desperately, my eyes looked at everyone until his smell engulfed me. The strong indescribable sent of his body was drawing me in. Who was he? I searched and searched. Then my soul froze as I saw him. My heart felt like it was being ripped it of my chest.
