‘Well, well,’ Gibran said to himself smiling. ‘Detective Inspector Corrigan gets his man again. Now maybe I’ll get the chance to meet this killer of yours after all.’ He leaned closer to the television – the smile gone from his face – his straight white teeth disappearing behind blood-red lips. ‘Maybe one day, Corrigan, we’ll meet again too.’

  Two Weeks Later

Sean sat alone in his office in Scotland Yard ploughing through lab reports and CPS demands about the Langley case. The Senior Prosecutor was most unhappy about some of the allegations Langley had made against the police, including torture and interviewing him without cautioning him or allowing him access to a solicitor. Sean wasn’t worried. With regards to the caution, it was his word against Langley’s. As for the torture – he’d been sensible enough to clean most of the blood from his shoe before bagging it as evidence. Interviewing him without a solicitor and away from a police station was never an issue. It was necessary to find and save Anna. He almost looked forward to lying in court just to see the look on Langley’s face.

His team had calmed down too, although he had some bridges to build – particularly with Sally. Anna was still away with her husband. He’d talked to her briefly, but the conversation was awkward – as if Anna, in some small way, suspected her kidnap had been part of Sean’s greater plan.

He pushed the paperwork aside and leaned back in his chair, rubbing at the stiffness in his neck and trying to ignore the pain in his thigh. When his desk phone rang, he grabbed the handset. ‘DI Corrigan,’ he answered, but no one spoke, although he could immediately sense some malevolence seeping through the phone. ‘Hello,’ he encouraged the silent caller. After a few seconds he was sure he could hear unsteady breathing. ‘Is anybody there?’ He was about to hang up when a man’s voice finally spoke.

‘Detective Inspector Corrigan?’ the softly spoken voice asked – sounding nervous and afraid.

  ‘Who is this?’ Sean demanded.

‘I’ve … I’ve just killed someone,’ he confessed.

‘Listen,’ Sean warned him. ‘I don’t have time for this. You could get in a lot of trouble making nuisance calls to the police.’

‘It was my first time,’ the voice told him, ‘but it won’t be my last. It was so wonderful. So much better than I had even dared to imagine. There was so much blood. I never knew a person could have so much blood inside them.’

  ‘Who is this?’ Sean repeated.

‘I don’t know when I’ll kill again … Perhaps next week. Perhaps next year. I haven’t decided yet. It depends how I feel. But when I do I’ll be sure to call you and let you know. I don’t think you’ll ever catch me though. Not even you. I have to go now.’

  ‘Wait,’ Sean pleaded.

‘Cromer House on the Lisson Grove Estate in Paddington,’ he told him. ‘Number three. Ground-floor flat. You’ll find her body there. Goodbye, Inspector.’

‘No. Wait,’ Sean tried to stop him, but he heard the line go dead. ‘Hello,’ he said forlornly into the empty phone. ‘Hello.’
