Did you enjoy writing when you were a child? What advice do you have for young aspiring writers who might be reading this book?

My mother surprised me a few years ago by showing me the first books I wrote when I was six or seven. I couldn’t believe she’d kept them. One was a story about a cat and its instincts. The other story, carefully folded and stapled, was an illustrated tale about a princess who ate a lot of blackberries—in the story, she kept popping them into her mouth.

As for advice to young writers, it is the same advice I’m sure they’ve already heard because it’s so true. Read, read a lot, read everything. I’d also say do interesting things—go kayaking, ride a horse, build a fort or a go-cart—get involved in anything creative and fun. You never know when that experience will come in handy with one of your stories.
