  Chapter One

Kyra slid out of the car and looked around in dismay and trepidation. Her friend Jada had to be mistaken. There was no way she’d want her to come to a dive like this. Right?

The building was a dingy gray with souped-up trucks and bikes in front of it. She could smell the stench of urine, booze, cigarette smoke, human sweat, and pot.

God, what had she gotten herself into? This place reminded her so much of where she’d come from. She’d fought long and hard to pull herself out of the poverty and chaos with the family she’d grown up with, and there was no way she’d ever go back.

She had a steady job in a clothing store in a strip mall, which paid her well enough that she could have her own apartment in a decent part of town, a car, and even take a few college courses.

Now, one of the friends she’d grown up with wanted her to come here? Was it to remind her where they came from? Hell, she didn’t need any reminder or a stroll down memory lane. If she could forget her childhood, she would.

The sign said the place was the Stinky Pig, the name Jada gave her. For God’s sake, who would name a bar that?

Her first instinct was to get back in her car and drive away, but her two best friends were in there, and there was no way she was going to leave without them.

Kyra locked up her car, walked around puddles of what she didn’t know and didn’t want to find out, and pulled open the door. The resounding thud of it closing behind her sent a shiver down her spine.

  “Hey, Kyra.”

Kyra looked to the right and saw Jada standing and waving to her at one of the tall booths in the back.

Kyra ignored all the hungry looks from the guys in the bar as she walked over and slid into one of the seats next to Lina.

“What in the hell are you thinking?” Kyra whispered.

“I asked her the same thing,” Lina said.

“You guys, our lives are boring. We haven’t done anything different or fun in months. Sam told me about this place, and I thought we’d have fun.”

  “Sam, your boyfriend?” Kyra asked.

  “Yeah.”

“The same one you think is a total idiot? You listened to him?” Her eyebrows rose.

“That’s what I asked,” Lina said.

Kyra looked around the place and gritted her teeth at the men who blatantly stared at them with feral hungry looks in their eyes. “God, Jada, you’re going to get us raped or killed.”

“No, I’m not. Sam and a few of his buddies are coming. They’ll sit with us and protect us.”

Kyra snorted. “We’re talking about Sam, the guy that’s skinnier than you?”

“Well, yeah, but that doesn’t mean they can’t protect us.” Jada shrugged.

Kyra glanced at Lina and saw the same apprehension she felt. “I think we should just go before these guys have more to drink.”

  “I agree,” Lina said.

Jada sighed. “I didn’t think it would be this rough. You’re right, let’s get out of he— Oh, shit. Kyra, duck down right now. Dirk just walked into the bar.”

She could feel real, unbearable terror squeeze her stomach into one big knot. “What? No, no, no. He’s not supposed to come back to town. He told the cops he’d leave and never come back because he had broken the restraining order I have against him. It was either that or he’d get arrested.”

“Your stepbrother has never played by the rules, Kyra,” Lina said. “What are we going to do? If we get up and try to leave, he’ll see you, but I’m afraid if we sit here, he’ll recognize us. It’s been a long time since he’s seen us, but we haven’t changed that much.”

Kyra shimmied over Lina and into the booth’s corner and then pulled Lina close to her.

Kyra glanced at her friend as one thought after another buzzed through her head, trying to come up with a solution. “Jada, get as far into the corner as you can. Let’s see if we can wait for the place to fill up more, and then we’ll sneak out.”

Jada pushed herself tightly against the wall. “God, you guys. I’m so sorry.”

Kyra reached over the table and grabbed her hands. “Maybe when Sam and his friends get here, they can block us and get us out.”

Jada nodded and then sucked in a breath before her gaze went down to the drink in her hands, and she forced a smile on her face.

Right away, Kyra knew something was wrong.

“Kyra, get down under the table. Dirk keeps looking over here,” Jada said through gritted teeth.

Kyra moved under the table, and Lina slid over and tried to hide her with her legs. “Stay calm and smile, Lina, so he doesn’t think we’re worried.”

Kyra had no idea what was going on. She just sat on the floor and tried to make herself as tiny as possible as the girls talked about everyday things, trying to act normal. Her heart rate started to gallop when Lina nudged her with her leg, and then she saw a pair of legs with large black boots, and she’d never forgotten the raspy tone of his voice from smoking for so many years.

“Girls, hey, aren’t you friends with my sister?” Dirk said.

“Oh, we’re not sure,” Jada said. “Who’s your sister?”

Kyra could tell by the timbre of her tone Jada was terrified and didn’t know what to do.

“I think you know. Little Kyra?”

“She doesn’t have a brother,” Lina said.

Kyra grasped Lina’s legs when they started to shake.

  “I’m her fucking stepbrother, Dirk.”

“I’m sorry, but we haven’t seen her in a couple of years,” Jada said.

  “Really?” Dirk said.

Kyra knew by the tone of his voice that he didn’t believe them at all.

  Jada cleared her throat. “Yeah.”

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Dirk asked.

“We’re meeting my boyfriend and a few of his friends here.”

“I’d like to meet them when they get here.”

“Oh, well, maybe. I don’t think we’ll be sticking around too long. I don’t think Sam realized how rough this bar is.”

A commotion at the door had Dirk turning. “Fuck me.”

  “What?” Lina asked.

“Nothing. Just a fucker I know.” Dirk’s body turned back to the table. “I’ll be watching you bitches.”

Kyra saw him turn and walk off. She laid her head against Lina’s legs as all three of them shook uncontrollably.

“What are we going to do?” Jada asked.

“God, I don’t know. Can you get in touch with Sam and see where he is?” Kyra asked.

She heard Jada talking and knew their situation had gotten worse when she started growling into the phone.

“You’re the one who fucking told us to come here, and now you’re not coming?” There was a pause. “Are you fucking kidding me? You were right outside and didn’t even call me to tell me you’re too chicken to come in. You’re leaving your girlfriend in this place when I desperately need you?”

Jada threw her phone into her purse and cursed. “Guys, we’re fucked. My now-ex-boyfriend is too chicken to come in.”

Kyra pressed on her eyeballs with her fingertips because she wanted to cry so much, but she had to hold it together for herself and her friends.

  Chapter Two

“Why can’t we call the police?” Lina asked.

Hope started to blossom in Kyra. “Yes, try it.”

Jada pulled her phone out again and dialed. She explained the situation, listened for a moment, said a few things, and then hung up.

  “What?” Lina asked.

“She said they’d send a few cars here, but it wouldn’t be for a while because they have a gun standoff a mile from here. It involves a few kids and their parents. If it had been an emergency, she would have sent a car. She said to call back if things got to that point.”

Kyra glanced over the room that she could see. Hell, it is to that point, she thought. “It looks like it’s filling up. Can you see Dirk?”

  “I can’t,” Lina said.

“Me, either. Do you want to try to get out of here?” Jada asked.

“Is there a door closer to us?” Kyra asked.

  “I can’t see one.”

“I say we make a break for it,” Kyra said. “But you have to promise me if he catches me, you’ll run. You can call the police from your car.”

“No, I can’t leave you,” Lina said.

“Me either. Especially since I’m the one that got you into the situation.”

“Listen, you guys, it’s my only chance. There’s no way you’ll be able to get me away, and I’m terrified some of his scuzzy friends will try to grab you, and then we’ll have no chance. Please promise me.”

“I promise, b ut we won’t leave without you. We’ll be waiting out in the car.”

Kyra nodded to Jada. “Let’s go.”

The three women crawled or slid from the booth, then stayed down without looking conspicuous. They were almost to the door when Kyra felt someone grab a chunk of her hair in the back of her head, and she knew instantly who it was.

“Run,” she yelled to the girls. They were out the door, but it didn’t mean they were safe.

“Well, well, well. I knew those bitches were lying,” Dirk said.

She tried to twist away. “Dammit, Dirk. Let of me.”

“Hell no. I’ve waited for this day for a long time. Do you know I dream about you every night? Every woman I fuck has your face.” He pulled her around to face him and then grabbed her face hard enough she knew it would leave bruises.

She cringed. God, how in the hell was she going to get out of this?

  “Dirk, you’re hurting me.”

He loosened his grip slightly but threw her up against the nearest wall and pressed his body to hers. “I think I need to hurt you. That way, you’ll never forget who you fucking belong to.”

“No, that would just make me hate you more. And I don’t belong to you.” She tried to kick him.

He laughed and dodged her kick. “When your mom married my dad, you became mine.”

“That’s bullshit. I became your stepsister, and they were married less than a year.”

  “It doesn’t fucking matter.”

“You’re not talking about a sister, though. You think I’m your woman or something.” The idea of it made her sick to her stomach.

“Because you are. I knew the first time I saw you in my dad’s living room that you were mine, and you knew it, too.”

“I did not. I was nice to you, but I know I didn’t come on to you in any way. I wouldn’t.”

He sneered. “It’s because you think you’re too good for me since I’m just a biker?”

She struggled again, but it was no use. He was as strong as an ox. “No, it has nothing to do with that.”

“You want a nice steady little man that works in an office and comes home to your picket-fenced house?” he asked.

“Just stop it, Dirk. I don’t want anyone. I want to work and take my classes. There’s nothing wrong with that. Now, let me go. You know you’re not supposed to be around me.”

If anything, his grip tightened, and his teeth clenched. “Yeah, fuck. You put a restraining order against me?”

Hell, why had she brought that up? “You were scaring me.”

“Too fucking bad. I think this is the perfect time to teach you who you belong to.”

She started to struggle as he grabbed her upper arm and dragged her toward the back of the bar.

She screamed. “Dirk, God, wait. I swear if you rape me, I’ll never forgive you.” She couldn’t believe all the people who just looked at her and didn’t do a damn thing.

He laughed. “I think eventually, you’ll get used to me. You won’t have a choice.”

She fought as hard as she could because the thought of getting raped made her feel like her world would come to an end. The Kyra she knew would never be the same.

“Dirk, please… Oh, God.” She screamed and tried to get loose when he tried to get her jeans unsnapped.

  “Hey!”

Dirk froze, and they both turned to look at someone to the left.

“What the fuck do you want?” Dirk asked.

Kyra tried to take a deep breath, but her heart was racing, and the pressure of Dirk’s body made it impossible.

The guy walked toward them as he zipped his jeans, telling her he probably had just taken a piss.

“Well, you see, I don’t much like men that force women. They make me sick to my stomach.”

“I don’t fucking care. You need to move on before I fuck you up.”

  The guy laughed.

Kyra was afraid the guy couldn’t help her, but the closer he came toward them and into the dim light above the back door, she could see he was huge. He was bigger than Dirk, and he looked a hell of a lot meaner. She felt Dirk tense.

“This bitch is mine, and I can do what I want with her,” Dirk said.

The guy looked at her. “Are you his woman?”

She shook her head before Dirk could grab her chin.

  “No.”

“Do you want his hands on you?”

  “No.”

The guy looked back at Dirk. “You see, she doesn’t want your scuzzy hands on her. So I’m telling you if you don’t release her in the next five seconds, I’ll break your fucking arm.”

Dirk growled. “You fucker. This woman has been mine for a long time.”

  “One.”

“You can’t come in and tell me what to do,” Dirk bellowed.

  “Two.”

  “Bitch, tell him,” Dirk said.

“No. I will never be yours, Dirk.”

  “Three.”

Dirk’s grip on her tightened as he cursed. “You and I are going to see each other again, bitch.”

  “Four.”

Dirk threw her at the other man, who caught her and put her behind him as he faced off with her stepbrother. “You’re smarter than you look,” the man said.

Kyra gripped the back of the man’s pants to hold herself up because her knees were shaking so bad she felt like she’d fall to the ground.

“You’ll regret sticking your nose into someone else’s business,” Dirk said.

The man chuckled. “Oh, I doubt it. I do know you’ll regret fucking with her again because I’ll find your ass, cut your cock off, and shove it down your throat.”

  “Fuck you, bastard.”

  Chapter Three

Oh, my God. Did he really just say that? Was he serious?

Dirk stomped off in the other direction, and her shoulders sagged as the tension left her body.

“You can let go of me now,” the guy said.

Kyra did but then had to lean against the building to support herself or fall on her ass.

The breath caught in her throat at her first good look at him. The guy was humungous. He had to be at least five inches above six feet and was huge with muscles. Scars lined his arms and his face, but it didn’t detract from how handsome he was. If he tried, he could have probably been a model with his dark hair and eyes and square chin.

“Hey, I want to thank you,” she said.

  “Who is he?”

“It’s a long story,” she said.

The guy crossed his arms over his chest. “I’ve got time.”

She almost rolled her eyes, but then she reminded herself he’d just saved her from being raped. “He’s my stepbrother. My whore of a mother was married to his dad for less than a year, but the first time he saw me in his father’s house, he told me I was his no matter what I said. I got a restraining order, but you see how well that worked.”

“Your whore of a mother?” One of his eyebrows rose.

She probably sounded like she was being harsh, but she was complimenting the woman who birthed her. “Dirk’s dad was probably the sixth or maybe the seventh husband she had, but it could be more because I stopped counting when I was twelve. That’s not counting the men in between the marriages that we lived with, or she just fucked.”

  “Holy shit.”

“Yeah, I know.” She pushed her hair from her face. “What’s your name?”

  “Dre.”

“I want to thank you for helping me.” He was so big she had to tilt her head back to see his face. What she could see of his face made her heart race. Even with the dim light casting shadows across his face, he was the most ruggedly handsome man she’d seen, and she could have stayed there and stared at him forever.

“You’re welcome. I was telling the truth about not liking men who hurt children and women.”

“We need more of you around. I don’t think I’ve seen you around before,” she said.

“I come through to see my brother once and a while.”

“Who’s your brother? Would I know him?”

“Fury, the prez of the Devil’s Sons.”
