Author's Note
Florida politics are messy, nasty, sexy, brutal, funny, insane, impossibly complex, and a lot of fun to write about. (Mostly because they’re messy, nasty, sexy, brutal, funny, insane, and impossibly complex.)
Since the focus of this series isn’t the politics so much as it is the people, I’ve taken certain liberties and simplified a few things here and there.
The kinky shit, however, is absolutely realistic.
Also, this series was created before Covid was a thing, and I’ve decided not to incorporate those events into the world this series, and its related spin-off series, are set in.
Note: The books in this series should be read in order.
Dedication
For Trish and Tracy for loving Carter and Owen and Susa and encouraging me to keep writing in this world.
Chapter One
Owen
Christmas Eve
“So how’s it feel to have your wish granted?” Susa asks as she playfully nudges me with her hip.
“What do you mean?”
She’s wearing that sneaky little smi le I love so much. “Kevin Markos. Weren’t you hoping for an on-air implosion?”
I snort. “Yeah, I was. Except he treated you well on that interview the morning after the election, so I wasn’t nearly as mad at him as I had been. Kind of a shame, actually.”
“Don’t feel too sorry for him,” Carter says as he walks into the kitchen with another load of dirty dishes in his hands. “He’s running Senator Samuels’ campaign for president. Wouldn’t be shocked if she makes him her chief of staff when she wins.”
Susa laughs. “If she wins.”
“I have no doubt she’ll win,” Carter says.
“Really?” She arches an eyebrow at him. “After that hot mess on a skillet?”
She’s referring to Kevin Markos having a very colorful and emotional meltdown, live on the air, a few days after the November election.
In prime time.
Carter shrugs. “We all have bad days, pet.”
Her blue gaze narrows as she studies the bastard extraordinaire. “What’d you hear?”
I turn from the sink, where I’m scrubbing the roasting pan we cooked the turkey in, to look at him. “Yeah, what’d you hear?” I echo.
Another shrug as he sets the dishes on the counter and I move aside so he can rinse his hands in the sink. “Just that maybe he was justified, and provoked, and finally had enough of his network’s shit.”
“Never stopped him before,” I say. “You still glad we turned down her offer?” I’m only partially joking.
I mean, yeah, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend a little time after the fact thinking about what might have been had I accepted Senator Samuels’ offer to run as her VP, and Carter her offer to be her campaign manager.
Except then I think about our two sons, Petey and Tommy, who are now upstairs asleep in their turkey comas. Petey’s three and a half, and Tommy’s two. Once Susa’s sworn in as governor, I plan on spending my days being a dad, making school runs once they’re old enough, volunteering in their classes—everything.
Being a dad.
I don’t give a crap that the world thinks I’m “just” their godfather and a good family friend. My sons and my spouses and our closest family all know the truth, and that’s all that matters to me.
We opted to have our private family dinner tonight, because tomorrow, after the boys open their presents, we’ll all be over at the Governor’s Mansion. It’s my last official Christmas as the governor of Florida, and Susa’s last as lieutenant governor.
And her first Christmas as governor-elect.
Tomorrow, the mansion will be full of family, friends, politicians, and other high-ranking state officials. A last photo op for me as governor before Susa’s inauguration next month.
We’re both counting the days—me until I can once again be a private citizen, and Susa until she ascends to my current office of governor.
Her dream realized in full.
Although my current dream is to be a dad, sleep in late with Carter every morning, and enjoy life out of the spotlight at home as a family.
In other words, it’s a happy ending for everyone.
The doorbell rings.
“I’ve got it,” Carter says. “That’s probably Dray and Gregory.” He heads out to answer it.
I step in front of the sink again to resume my previous chore. Once we finish with this, the three of us are heading over to the mansion for a little private adult celebration. Since it’s only a couple of blocks away, it’s easy to travel back and forth, security detail or not. Draymond and Gregory are going to stay with the kids for us while we’re gone. Dray is Susa’s chief of staff. His long-time boyfriend, Gregory, is chief of staff to Ethan Hamilton, who is now Susa’s lieutenant governor.
Although Ethan is far more to both men.
As in, they have almost as big a secret to keep from the public as Susa, Carter, and I do.
Yes, it’s that confusing.
Carter returns with Dray and Gregory. “Governor Taylor,” Dray playfully says as he pats me on the back. “Governor Evans.”
Susa rolls her eyes. “Governor-elect Evans.”
“Just trying it on, ma’am.”
That prompts a snicker from me. Unlike me, Dray always says it with a lower-case m.
Dray, Gregory, and Ethan are among the very few people who know the truth about the three of us and have helped protect our secret.
And the three of us are among the even smaller circle of people who know Dray, Gregory, and Ethan’s secret.
* * * *
It doesn’t take us long to finish the dishes and put away leftovers. Then the three of us head out, our security detail whisking us over to the mansion in an SUV. At least one way in which this arrangement helps us with PR is that we don’t have two different security details spread all over Tallahassee.
Susa and Carter own one of the three townhouses in our building, I own the middle unit, and Susa’s parents own the third on the other side of me. But they live in a house outside of Tallahassee, so their unit is rarely occupied.
Mine is connected to Susa and Carter’s by an upstairs door we had installed, so I can come and go between the units without anyone knowing. With the upcoming transition, I’ve already started moving my personal things out of the mansion and back to the townhouse. A few things are staying, like the bedroom furniture, because Susa’s going to use it. But from tonight on, my security detail knows I’m living here full-time.
Meaning nights spent with the three of us once again sharing a bed all night long, until Susa’s sworn in and technically the mansion’s legal occupant.
But Susa’s tricky. Since the boys are young, we’re keeping them at the townhouse, with the excuse that we don’t want to uproot them. Also, it’s obviously easier to raise them at the townhouse than trying to child-proof a literal fucking museum with historical value. The townhouse is only a couple of blocks from the mansion, not even a five-minute walk. That means Carter will still make frequent treks between the two residences, only it’ll be Susa in the mansion and me at home with the boys.
I.
Can’t.
Wait.
When we reach the mansion’s front door, Carter quickly speaks with the head of the security detail while Susa and I go inside. We’ve asked that, for tonight, the mansion be cleared of all staff, except for security on the outside. Besides, it’s Christmas Eve.
We have the place to ourselves.
After Carter joins us and locks us in, he turns, and I see he’s wearing an evil smile that hardens my cock. I know from experience that same evil smile already has Susa wet and squirming. That’s because we can both see the front of his slacks are tented.
Hey, when you’ve been together for twenty-five years, you kind of know your spouses’ bodies pretty damn well.
Or, you should.
I do.
And they know mine, too.
Carter sets down the duffel bag he brought with him and pulls me in for a long, deep kiss that makes me want to drop to my knees in front of him, except I haven’t been ordered to do that.
Yet.
Give him time, the evening’s still young.
As he kisses me, my mind completely clears and quiets, something he’s always been able to do to me ever since we were roommates in college and he claimed me for life.
In all these years, I’ve never wanted to be anywhere else but with him, and with Susa. It’s truly difficult for me to remember a time before they were in my life.
Not that I want to remember that period of my life, anyway. Unlike my mother, Susa and Carter have never, not once, made me feel like their love was conditional, subject to a whim. They’ve always shown me, in every way, how much they love me.
