Chapter 1
Harlow
I never thought being alpha mattered to me until I found myself witnessing it slipping through my fingers. I’m not delusional. I know where I stand with my father. There is no love lost there, that’s for damn sure. I’ve been a prisoner on this mountain, in the confines of these pack lands, for nearly a decade now.
And why? Because I serve a single purpose in his world. But I thought maybe, just maybe, I might at least be a blip on his radar for alpha. I am, after all, his flesh and blood. His daughter.
Oh, wait, how silly of me. I forget, I’m also his mutt daughter. That’s right, he couldn’t possibly fathom handing the pack over to such a mockery of the wolf species.
It’s not my fault he knocked up a human and got me three months later, but he certainly makes sure to blame me for it. I didn’t ask to be born a half-bred mess. Yet, I’m getting denied my goddamn birthright. My father, Bennett Callahan, is the pack alpha. Which means by blood and right, I should be the one standing at the head of the pack right now and not fuck all Aiden Bane.
Daddy’s little lap dog.
And he’s looking mighty proud up there standing next to my old man too.
Today marks three years since my father named Aiden as his second beta. It’s in the bloodline, he had said. Banes have been betas to this pack's alphas for decades. Even before, when it used to be Shadow Ridge Clan. A Bane stood by Diesel Ridge. A Bane and a Callahan. Randall Bane must be very proud. Like father, like son. That man is vile.
The pack doesn’t question any of it, though. They never question anything my father declares. And because I’m the little mutt, I’m expected to step down and let Aiden have it when the time comes. Unchallenged. Whatever, I never asked for it anyway. I never expected my father to see me as anything more than a broken condom and a mistake.
“Harlow,” my father calls to me.
I stiffen as all eyes burn through me. My father motions for me to join them.
No fucking thank you.
“Come up here,” he says, but I hear the demand.
Great. Just fantastic. Humiliating me isn’t enough, he has to put me on display too. Absolutely wonderful…
I hug my arms tight to my frame as I push through the crowd. I swear every wolf is staring me down as if waiting for me to lose my mind. If they don’t stop staring at me, I just might. After twenty years, I wish it was something I grew used to. The stares. The whispers. The looks. I blame my father for it. He made me his dirty little secret by leaving me down in Ivywood with my mother and the humans. And I was fine with that. Let him stay up here on this mountain with his pack, pretending he didn’t father a half-human, half-wolf daughter. I was living life just fine with the humans.
But then Mom died and life as I knew it came to a screeching halt. Everything I knew was ripped away from me. My home. My life. My everything. To live up on this mountain. With my controlling asshole father of the year. I have to constantly ask myself why I’m even still here. Just run. Escape. I’m nearly twenty-one— in a week—which makes me a grown ass adult. But then I remember what happened the last time I tried taking off.
My father’s fingers close around my arm when I’m close enough and he drags me between him and Aiden.
Perfect Aiden Bane. He’s got the perfect hair, eyes, and a body like a god. Every girl in this pack swoons for him. Wet in their panties just for a taste. I’ve had it. It pissed my father off. Sated my horny wolf, though. And then he dragged me back to my father when I ran. Stood by when my punishment was doled out for my blatant defiance and did nothing. I haven’t looked at him since without it making me sick. He’s no better than his father.
“On the next full moon…” My father catches my attention. “My beautiful daughter—” Oh, now I’m his beautiful daughter? “—will be joined in a traditional pack ceremony with Aiden.”
Oh no the fuck I will not. Who made that decision? Nope. Fuck. That. My father’s fingers dig into the flesh of my arm and I bite back a hiss while all eyes are on us with a roar of excitement and applause. I’m smart enough to know when not to make a scene but once I’m not on display, it’s going down. It’s not happening and they’re all going to be beyond disappointed when the bride is a no-show. I am not some plaything to do with as he pleases. I’m a fucking person with a mind of her own. So he and Aiden can go fuck themselves. Marry each other, for all I care.
“Smile, sweetheart,” Aiden whispers, snatching my hand in a death lock before I can jerk away. “It could be worse.”
Yeah? He really thinks so? I’d rather walk on hot coals and Lego's than marry his arrogant ass. Get my eyes gouged out by a dull spoon.
I shoot him a scathing look. “Compared to what? A pit of venomous snakes? I’d rather the pit.”
I’m out of here. The minute I can take off, I am so gone. I’ll go to the Badlands and take my chances with hardened rogues and criminals. Pretty sure they’re more honest.
The minute I’m back in my father’s house, I jerk out of his punishing grip and put distance between me and them. No surprise Randall looks amused, proud even, while he leans back against the front door, arms crossed. He’s a creepy, sick asshole. Been looking at me the same since I grew some tits and ass—damn good ones too but not for his old ass to drool and ogle. God, it makes my stomach curdle.
“What the hell was that?” I demand.
My father takes a step in my direction and I bolt back several. Not a chance.
His stare hardens. “Ensuring this pack stays in the right hands.”
“Pfft.” I roll my eyes. “So I’m not good enough to be the next alpha but I’m good enough to breed? Is that it?”
My father doesn’t even think about it and shrugs instead. “If that’s how you want to see it, then yes.”
I think I always knew the answer. I’m Bennett Callahan’s big mistake, but I am his daughter. I am his blood. I’m good for something: breeding his bloodline. And he’s been grooming Aiden for years to do just that. Well, I hate to break it to them, but he’d have to get his dick in me first and I plan on cutting it off the minute he tries to get it close.
So, now what?
I glare at Aiden and his goddamn smug expression.
“I dare you,” I growl. “Try, and you’ll be pissing out a tube.”
“Please, Harlow, I’ve already got it in before. Won’t be hard to do it again.”
I’m going to be sick.
“You can’t make me do this.”
My father smirks, nodding. “I can and I am. How it looks is entirely up to you, Harlow.”
What the hell? “Meaning?”
“Meaning, either you straighten up and fall in line and do what I expect of you or I will make you and you won’t like it.”
My arms fold over my chest and I raise my chin. “Yeah? You going to hold me down too?”
He raises his brow. “If you force my han
I can hear the blood roaring between my ears as how serious he really is about this sets in. My father has given this thought. He’s been planning this and it makes my stomach plummet to my feet. He’s always been a lot of things, but this is a whole new level of fucked up. Even for him.
“So what’ll it be, Harlow?” my father asks. “The easy way and you behave, or the hard way and you suffer? Either way ends the same.”
A few things I know without a doubt.
He’s dead serious.
I have to play along if I want to survive it.
And if I don’t find a way to get the hell out of here before the full moon, it guarantees I never get out.
“It’ll be not a chance in hell.”
Chapter 2
Ronan
"C’mon angel, put my cock in your mouth, would ya?"
Axel tilts his head back with a raised brow like I have the nerve to talk to him like that. I wouldn’t do it if I knew he didn’t love it. My bad ass alpha is all mine to use and abuse when the bedroom door closes and then he’s just my mate. And he craves it. It’s the only reason he’s on his knees, gripping my cock, and not the other way around.
“Not going to suck itself babe.”
I love Axel. Have since we were kids. First as my best friend and second as my lover but most of all as my mate. Which, to be honest, blew my mind but I’ll count my fucking blessings and never question the Chaos’s decision. Like ever. It was drilled into our heads our mate would be a girl. Not a guy. Just the way it’s meant to be. Something about the future of the wolves and pups and some shit. Don’t get me wrong, I like pussy too but when the last Chaos hit, nine years ago, and it was Axel giving me all the jittery, tingly feel goods, I wasn’t disappointed.
He’s the soulmate I never thought I’d have and now I have him all to myself. And we still get all the pussy we want to share. It’s a win win but I’ll always crave this and him more. And the power he gives me.
“Yeah and that power is going to your head.”
Damned mind link. “Yeah and you see how swollen it is?”
Axel cracks a smile. “You’re a cocky son of a bitch, Ro.”
“Damn right, now do as your told and put this cock—”
Teeth scrap over my throbbing cock and when my head hits the back of his throat, I groan out the last words. Sneaky son of a bitch is what he is but I can’t find any damn good reason to care when his hand grips tighter to my shaft and he’s going down again.
“Fucking hell…”
I lean back against the door and grip to the back of his head because fuck if he’s not going to take every goddamn inch of my cock down his throat. Every bit with a groan vibrating from his chest. The sound makes me throb that much more and my hand buries deeper into his mess of hair for leverage. I swear the man has prettier hair than most of the women in the pack.
I thrust my hips with another low rumble vibrating in my chest. Fire creeps in my veins as his pleasure prickles through me, only enhancing my own. I peer down at him and groan at the sight of his mouth bobbing on my cock.
He’s got his cock out, in hand and jerking off by the third thrust of my hips and it’s nothing but grunts and groans filling the space of our room. I curse and growl, mutter words I’m not even sure count as the English language.
“Make yourself come with my cock down your throat, Axel.”
I bury my cock as deep as he’ll take me. The groan that vibrates from his chest has me seeing stars. I open my eyes in time to see him pumping his shaft hard and fast, coming right along with me.
I heave a heavy breath. “Shit, Ax.”
I’ll be the first to admit, Axel is a scary looking dude. No more than me really but he’s taller by a bit and broader in the shoulders. And he has that alpha thing going on. It can be slightly imposing without knowing the man.
He smirks as he gets to his feet and reaches over his head to drag his shirt off to clean up his mess. Every inch of flesh from hands to shoulders, neck to V and down his back is covered in ink. Just like me. I find it devastatingly delicious. Others just find it terrifying.
He invades my space, resting a hand on the door beside me and leans close. “You’ve got a dirty mouth on you, Ro.”
“I’m pretty sure you have that confused with your dirty mouth.”
And sinful.
Axel smiles, showing his truly sweet and sexy parts. He’s soft where it counts. One smile on him has the power to erase any threat he might be. Too bad he doesn’t do it nearly often enough. He just shakes his head and pecks my lips before pulling away. I snatch him at the waist of his jeans and jerk him back.
“Try again.”
The smile grows into a full blown grin with teeth and that’s it, he’s my teddy bear. His lips crush to mine and he slips his tongue in, tasting like a lot of bad ideas for the evening and fuck pack duties. A renewed growl rumbles in his chest and I’m about to haul his ass to the bed when someone knocks on our door.
“Get out here,” Dante hollers through the door.
Axel hangs his head but I chuckle.
“You love him…” I tease as I zip up my jeans and move out of the way so he can open the door.
“I don’t know why,” Axel grumbles. He swings the door open with a grunt. “What?”
It’s almost a mirror image of me staring back at us. Dante is an inch shorter and his features aren’t as sharp as mine. Even he agrees on that much, but there’s no denying we’re brothers. Twins. I’m older by a whole three minutes but we share the same eyes, dark hair, and a decadent inclination for ink and pain.
And Axel.
I’m not sure what Axel did to land himself twins for mates but it suits him. Even if my little brother is far too tame in comparison to me. Axel craves both. He gets his cake and eats it too.
“Thought you might want to know the news making its rounds.” Dante folds his arms over his chest with a smirk. “But I’ll wait if getting face fucked is more—”
Axel bristles, moving an inch in my brother’s direction. I catch him by the arm and glare at Dante.
“Don’t be a little jealous prick, D. Out with it.”
It better be good too because he just interrupted more than face fucking about to happen. I’ve got a hell of an itch to be scratched lately and he’s pissing all over my delicious fun.
“Bennett Callahan made an announcement, declaring Aiden alpha heir.”
Axel growls low and clenches his fists at his side.
Shit. “Babe…”
“Oh, it gets better, Ro,” Dante taunts. Better than Aiden being named heir? “Tonight, if the rumor mill is to be trusted, Bennett is tossing off some girl to Aiden too… in a joining ceremony.”
Axel glances at me with a lot of bad ideas swirling in his gaze. It’s menacing and I know we’ll regret it later.
Maybe it’s because it's supposed to be Chaos, or the lack of it after nine years— vanishing out of the blue— but I’m inclined to give in to whatever it is Axel wants to do. Purge some of the pent up aggression that’s been building for weeks in anticipation of something we all know won’t come.
“Think the girl is one of his?” Dante asks.
“Oh, I’d bet my life on it.”
Another sound rumbles in Axel’s chest. It’s not just that it’s not Bennett’s pack to hand off. It was never his at all. But the last Chaos seeded our future for us. Axel was given a choice by Bennett, and my father, Randall.
It’s either alpha and the pack, or me and Dante. A lifetime of friendship, love, and a mate bond made the choice for Axel.
One challenge later and just like that, everything we had been groomed for was gone. Too bad it didn’t matter because Dante and I are still Axel’s betas and he’s the alpha I knew he’d be. Few followed Axel. A new pack formed. And he earned every ounce of loyalty Shadow Ridge pack gives him. Nine years later and we’re still growing as rogues, misfits, and outcasts find their way to us. I’d say it’s better than alpha by blood because he earned it.
But it’s not what has Axel looking ready to tear through our home and our land to get his hands on the sick son of a bitch. It’s because of Bennett Callahan’s dirty dealings with the packs in the Badlands and the women he delivers to them for a price. Trafficking has gotten worse since the Chaos disappeared. The more riled up and aggressive wolves get in its absence, the worse it gets.
